@Christopher Grattan - where is the explanation? I thought stick tackle at first. When a player plays the stick to get the ball it is a stick tackle. Tomas is correct. Many umpires will blow when they "hear" the foul (sticks sound). When umpiring, if I saw the stick played before the ball I would blow a foul. If there is a gap in between the ball and the stick and the ball only is played, good steal, no whistle.

my coach told me that stealing the ball is when the ball is slightly loose from the other player's stick.
I thought it is when you take the ball off of the face of the other player's stick (normally with an upright stick), cleanly of course. NOT using any of Thomas's dirty tricks.
My coach plays in the top league in England, so i reckon she must be right :D

no shielding !!! shielding can only happen when your stick is in front of the ball when ball is going forward, I do agree that if you do it smoothly no umpire will whistle against you .. but they should

dus ik geef hockeytraining aan kleine meisjes (kan er zelf niks van hoor, don't be fooled) maar in mijn hockeypraktijk plopte dit ineens op als trainingsdeel en ben vet verbaasd dat we dat nooit geleerd hebben hahaha.
I disagree with your description of this not being a stick tackle. If you go through a stick (make contact with a stick) to reach the ball, that's a stick tackle.
In your demonstration, Charlotte is actively playing the ball - she is not shielding, since she is moving the ball. You have the right to play the ball (and not be obstructed) but the ball carrier has the right to move the ball in any direction.
I would agree that she was shielding, if she wasn't moving the ball OR if she was not making contact with the ball (i.e. blocking your ability to play the ball).
The fact that you say to do it quietly proves you're being naughty lol
