  • Our beloved PA28 had an alternator failure, so Mike wanted to try out the Cessna 172. He's flown it on his simulator but never in real life. For never having flown one before he did a great job. Even better the he decided after the flight that we should stick with the PA28.

      Too much right rudder is a symptom of a poor owner. C172 have ground adjustable rudder trim.
      The C177 was designed for better visibility but was not as popular.
      As Joe Christy explains:
      We liked that airplane, and found almost nothing to pick at. However, owners soon discovered to their horror that it didn't fly or land exactly like a strutless Skyhawk, and some heavy-handed Super-Car drivers managed to smash the Cardinal tail into the pavement on landing, knock-off a few nose-wheels, etc. (apparently, this was possible if one closed his eyes, used full back-pressure on the wheel at the flare and then sat rigidly waiting for the crashing noises to subside). Cessna accepted the blame gracefully. That was proper because, after all, they had lulled a generation of Cessna pilots into near-effortless flying with the extremely forgiving 172 series, and it probably wasn't ethical to suddenly offer, to many of those same customers, a Cessna that didn't handle exactly like a Cessna. The company therefore picked up the tab for a list of modifications that gentled the Cardinal and returned the smiles to the faces of dealers and customers.

      My left leg is stronger than my right leg. You must have a really weak right leg if you can not hold the rudder. Maybe you need to go to the gym and get in shape. PS, so strange that the Cessna is in such high demand for an aircraft that you are talking bad about. All aircraft have good and bad qualities. I flew the Piper and yes a nice aircraft but it was very hot inside. I would take a Cessna any day over a Piper. But that is personal preference as I can not stand being so hot.

    I finally got checked out in a PA28 and it is so much better than the C172. Easier to land. It feels a little faster in the base to final turn, so I've been overshooting that turn a bit, but not having to float like Tinkerbell down the runway is wonderful. For sightseeing I think the C172 is better for my passengers though.

    • @kimberlywentworth9160
      @kimberlywentworth9160 Před 2 lety

      Yes, the only problem with a PA28 is there is only one door and very little air ventilation. I live in a area that is 80 to 100 degrees F. The plane flew nicely however, I had to pry my self out of the airplane as I stuck to the seats and then ended up drinking a gallon of water. My CFI was overheating and soaked in sweat. Great aircraft for colder climates.

    Hey Lew, love your content! I really think low approach maneuvers, if possible on a long runway, are very helpful to create that sight picture for student pilots to avoid ballooning and time to level off and flare. I personally had difficulties on landings until I did some low approaches and that helped me a lot.

  • @mattf49006
    @mattf49006 Před 3 lety +4

    Each design has its drawbacks re: visibilty... I've had more than a few pipers drop down in the pattern without seeing or clearing below ....a quick lift of the wing inside your turn and you're good...hit the approach as you should and a cessna will touch down where it should
    And you never worry about shedding a wing in the cessna 😁

      @@mytech6779 Yup. I’m a heavy chap, we usually carry about 140l (220lb) even for short flights, so yes most of the time we operate quite close to max gross. Even in training it’s usually around 2400. Explain the headwind part?

    • @mytech6779
      @mytech6779 Před 3 lety +1

      @@Barabyk I had my mind on poweroff landings, with more headwind you get a bit better glide angle with more speed. Not really a factor with a normal landing if you adjust aiming point for the reduced float or increase power.
      I don't know which submodel you are flying. I fly -K -M and -N and with full tanks and 430lb combined pilot, instructor and flight bags they only come up to about 2050-2150 takeoff weight. Landing 50lb less even with short flights.

      @@mytech6779 That's very clear now. I Fly fairly recent SP's 180HP, of which one with G1000 (higher basic weight). All go to max gross of 2550. As such, you can see we don't operate in as wide range of weights (usually 1-1.5hrs flights), so these numbers get us to the ball park... I mean, just a bit beyond (we have a ball playing field just before the RWY)...

    • @mytech6779
      @mytech6779 Před 3 lety +1

      @@Barabyk The older models have 2300 max, but the empty weight is about 1500. Now I'm pretty sure the main difference with the SP was a larger engine[and fuel injection] but as far as I know they use the same wing. So that would make a fair difference in landing speed. I tend to find accuracy landings like short fields are more consistent at higher weights.
      I was doing pattern work solo with half fuel in a -M a couple months ago and just floating forever with the airspeed needle bottomed well before touch down. Like a kite, every tiny gust of headwind was adding significant lift and large change in the float.

There was a short stretch where I was using full flaps until my instructor brought it up and had me switch to 20, and in my limited experience since, approaches and landings have felt much easier. Fair enough. For me it’s conditional. I prefer the extra help of the flaps to keep a steeper descent approach angle. In heavier winds I use less, but normal conditions go full. You’re right though there is no right or wrong way. You prefer less flaps, that’s no issue

      @farmgene Před 3 lety

      I was taught in a 172. We learned with 20 degrees. It’s just a good standard. The plane still feels maneuverable and you can adjust from there depending on your needs.

    Question Lew: When on your base turn Rwy 7 you appear to be pretty low over the tops of the buildings downtown. From my understanding, in a congested area, we are supposed to stay 1000 ft above the highest building and 2000 ft horizontal. Is there an exemption to this rule when flying the traffic pattern KORL? 4:40 i’ve been wanting to ask this every time i see the 172 on this channel; what’s with dropping flaps while above the white arc? I fly an older 172H, and i was taught to not be above 100mph (vfe) when dropping flaps...

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  Před 3 lety +2

      Vfe in this is 110kts for flaps 10. Anything passed that is 85kts

    • @rigor.m9422
      @rigor.m9422 Před 3 lety

      LewDix Aviation thanks for the answer; i thought there could only be one vfe in the cessna, but it makes sense. In the older ones that don’t have notches so you have to guesstimate where 10 degrees actually is, the POH just says not to use flaps above 100mph.
