- स्त्री की महिमा है, समाज में उसको शुरू से पूज्य माना जाता रहा है, ये बातें हम अक्सर सुनते रहे हैं। आम तौर पर कहा जाता है कि हमारे यहाँ आरंभ से स्त्रियों को सम्मानजनक स्थान प्राप्त है और वैदिक काल में भी उन्हें ऊँची शिक्षा हासिल होती थी। इस दावे को परखने की ज़रूरत है। भक्ति परंपरा में कईं स्त्रियों के नाम प्रचलित भी हैं. पर जब ज्ञान निर्माण की बात आती है तो पितृसत्तात्मक समाज का ढाँचा स्त्री स्वर को उभरने से रोकता रहा है। आज से नहीं, सदियों से। फिर भी स्त्रियों ने अलग अलग माध्यम से अलग अलग भाषा में अपनी बात कही है। उसमें समाज के नियम-कायदों पर, स्त्री जीवन की बाध्यताओं पर तीखी टिप्पणियाँ मिलती हैं।
भारत में स्त्री शिक्षा के इतिहास में चंद नाम ही क्यों सुनाई पड़ते हैं ? शिक्षा तक उनकी पहुँच को संभव बनाने में उनके जाति-धर्म-वर्ग आदि की क्या भूमिका है? औपचारिक शिक्षा व्यवस्था के साथ अनौपचारिक शिक्षा व्यवस्था को भी क्यों देखना चाहिए? ऐसे कुछ सवालों को सामने लाती है यह वीडियो शृंखला।
वीडियो शृंखला की पहली कड़ी में हम छठी सदी ई. पू. से लेकर 11 वीं सदी तक 6 स्त्री रचनाकारों की बात करेंगे। हमारा प्रयास है कि भारत के भिन्न भिन्न कोनों से उठा स्त्री स्वर आप तक पहुँच पाए।
Historically, in India, women who excelled in the fields of arts and humanities have been highly respected and praised as spiritualists and saints. However, their role as knowledge producers and their contribution to education is rarely mentioned. Even in the mainstream discourse on women’s education, we usually only find mentions of upper-caste women who operated within strict norms of Brahmanical patriarchy to be recognised as educated. Such a casteist and exclusionary reading of history has caused the erasure of several significant contributions of women to education and knowledge production in fields like science, literature, medicine etc.
This video series by Nirantar attempts to demystify the role of women in the history of education, by focusing on women whose lives tested the norms of “ideal” womanhood. Through the lens of education, the first video in this series looks at six historical figures who were mystified as saints and devotees between 6 BC and 12 CE, but whose lives as scholars went much beyond that. These women generated and disseminated their knowledge through informal channels, oral traditions and literary forms of poetry, prose, autobiographies, long-form fiction and short stories.
