Yep, me too. Kevin bashes Tusk so much, I never bothered to watch it. To me, this film says you can take absolutely any idea and make a meaningful movie out of it. Tusk, is like that really disturbing painting in the art gallery that you stare at for half an hour and then days later you are still disturbed by it. Not everyone would think of that as a compliment, but I thought the film had real merit.

BaronVonBielski, it’s definitely a parody, it was made for 3.5 million dollars so to say it was cheaply done is an understatement. All the actors worked for free. I believe the film crew and the production people worked for free as well. Nobody is arguing this is a four star film. One star is probably generous. That said, myself and a growing number of people saw a bit of genius hidden in a couple scenes and are able to appreciate it.

The directing was good, without trying to be "an artiste," which is where most top directors fuck up: nobody wants their auteur bullshit that distracts us and takes us out of the movie, killing immersion through their attempts to be cool, elevated savants. Jay just did the work clean and smart, letting the camera be a bystander (us) watching the story, without stupid Dutch angles and other "tricks" that dumbass disconnected-from-reality millionaires who are out of touch with the movie-going public arrogantly believe will impress us instead of the actual result... making us lose connection to the film and start checking the time. I feel compelled to write a small novel about my experience with Tusk, I found it funny enough to type out hopefully you find this funny enough to read.
Been a Kevin Smith fan since Mallrats, CZcams/podcasts been a fan for about 3 months since I realized that was a thing. I watched Tusk for the first time a few years ago with my husband on some streaming service a few years ago. I had no idea this movie existed. My husband informed me it was a horror movie that Kevin Smith made. I replied that those were two things I liked individually and had no idea how that would go...so let’s put it on. So I knew next to nothing. I didn’t know this was a talked about thing on the podcast.
Fast forward to halfway through the movie my husband pauses it to get a snack. This was around the time it’s revealed that Justin Long woke up to find out he now had fewer legs than he’d fallen asleep with. My husband noticed my heart beat was racing and asked if I needed him to turn it off because he’d never seen me truly scared to the point of having a physical reaction. I cry at emotional commercials but I don’t get scared. I was a little shocked myself because I’d never really had that kind of terror reaction to any horror movie previously or since. I’m not just saying that to verbally blow Kevin Smith on the internet - I just think you should know I was actually scared. Good job.
It was so fucking terrifying to not know the guy was turning Justin Long into a walrus going into this. I once swore off ever watching it again and I’ve even refused to watch things Justin Long has done since. I’m so amused that this was a thing on the podcast but i love the way I found this - otherwise I would have been too amused about cameos in the movie that I’d be looking out for to be scared.
TLDR; I would wager that anyone, like myself, naive enough to watch a horror movie called Tusk knowing that Kevin Smith made and and still somehow not know this would end up in a walrus suit got a better, more terrifying experience.

The "Walrus" portion of Tusk was filmed in my neighborhood. There is a golf course in the neighborhood, and at the time of the filming of Tusk it was in bankruptcy, so the club house was empty and the grounds were suitably desolate. There actually is a mansion on top of a hill, but pretty sure they didn't film anything there. They used a shot of the cast-iron gate with the name of the mansion (which I think they changed using CGI). I think they filmed all of the interior scenes in the club house. The scene at the very end shows them walking through the parking lot into the club house to visit Mr. Walrus.

How they were able to combine comedy, horror, plus great acting from Michael parks and Justin long, and truly disturbing but brilliant special effects that at the end left you so emotional and sad. I also felt like the film had a message and that soundtrack was so good.

Actually saw this at one of the "live" Q&A theater events. My only issue with the flick was that it stayed unflinchingly loyal to the ideas and plot laid out in the podcast, so there were no surprises or twists if you were already a fan. If you heard the podcast, it was exactly that, so I don't know how shocked you can be as viewer if you already knew what precisely was going to happen.
