    Meant to say cheap fountain pen "ALTERNATIVE" about the v7 and v5. Sorry!
    Hello Art-family!
    This video is a response and tag-along with some AWESOME videos I saw going up today by a group of incredible youtube artists. Here are links to their videos. Again- This was THEIR idea and I'm just showing up to the bbq late. :)

    Their videos got me thinking about the biggest mistakes I've seen and experience in my own journey. I decided to throw together this little video on my thoughts on drawing. I work with people all the time learning to draw or paint but just wanting it to "turn on" like a light switch. It's difficult to express the importance of developing an unbreakable drawing habit. This video was my method of learning how to draw as I did not go to an art school that taught representational art and didn't start drawing until after college on my own.
    Happy Sketching!

    This is really fantastic advice. Thank you so much!
    Not to correct this video for the sake of correcting, but just in case anyone is confused when buying a pen, the Pilot V5 and V7 not technically Fountain Pens, but Roller Ball type pens. They're great pens to draw with, and fountain pens can be too, so whatever anyone gets would be fine for this exercise. Just...no one waste any precious drawing minutes (or hours or years depending on how persistent anyone might be) in pen aisle after pen aisle looking for a Fountain Pen version of the V7 or V5. I mean, unless hunting cryptid pens that you once heard tell of is somebody's thing. Then by all means, have at it!
    I'm rambling. I'll hush now.

    Great video. I have also thought that it’s important to have a secret sketchbook. Another benefit of having a secret sketchbook to play around and make mistakes in is to alleviate the “pressure” of having a “social media-worthy” sketchbook. It’s extremely trendy now to show off “sketchbooks” with refined, near-finished, and even finished drawings and paintings. Sketchbooks with really high quality work. An artist can definitely have good quality work in their sketchbooks, but sketchbooks are, in my opinion, a place for artists to play, experiment, work things out, learn, and make mistakes.
    Most artists don’t put out high quality work every time they put pen/pencil/brush to paper. There’s more mess than there is finished work, but it can be difficult to see and remember than when scrolling through Instagram. It’s important to have many, many, many secret sketchbooks filled with pages of stuff that is not worth showing off.

It's a great topic to cover and I thought about doing a "biggest drawing mistakes," but good grief... there's too many to list! lol! I like the Beethoven/piano analogy and that's exactly what I've taught to high school kids for years - to not expect perfection, because it doesn't exist; and that you can't do anything well without commitment and relentless practice! Good stuff and glad you shared this one! :)

    I expected this video to be the typical advice of "do art challenges" and "draw more hand studies" but it really went to the heart of things and gave a deep reason for why we should draw from life. Most people would advise to buy cheap sketchbooks so you could put in the mileage so I never invested in a good quality sketchbook for just myself. It's something to try. Especially like when you said to draw everything in my sight. I've been forever saying that "I want to do urban sketching" but I need to stop saying and start doing XD Thanks for this quick pep talk! Really great content in this video. So many of these concepts have helped me in my art journey. I keep a moleskine and draw exclusively with brush pens. I’ve learned to embrace the process and accept the results. I’ve been talking about this recently too in my live IG videos. I’ve started approaching all my paintings as drafts to eliminate any initiation fears. Making mistakes in painting won’t lead to a hospital trip so there should be zero fear in painting or drawing, yet many of us are afraid of making mistakes. If you focus on the process, the results will come eventually. Anyway, love your content. Keep up the great work!!!

    It’s great you all are covering mistakes and I hope down the road you all will cover helping people with physical challenges that will help them to continue their love for art. Things like shaking hands, hands that are stiffening. That might be too much of a wish but things happen and challenges pop up that people didn’t see coming in life. It is always good to have gentle hints and reminders no matter the subject. PS The first time I really thought about contour drawing was watching Brenda Swenson. Not only is she a whiz at it she also has a special ability to keep that ink pen on the paper and never lift it. Keep hinting, we are listening. We have a full size wooden Indian in the living room and he is looking like he wants his portrait done in ink.

    Great advice Jared! I recently started doing this (but in pencil) I might have to switch to pen! But I definitely see the value in an anything goes sketchbook that's more about the practice of drawing than a finished piece of art. Even with my more finished paintings, I keep telling myself that they're all practice for the next thing. Because I'm definitely not where I want to be, and every painting is still lacking something... It's a journey, an we have to not just practice our skills, but also practice the skill of enjoying the practice!

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  Před 5 lety +2

      Yes! cool! Yea man. You gotta take some time and draw only in fountain pen. It's important that it's fountain because even pen is easy to slow down. Part of the practice is that if you stop with a fountain pen it will bleed out. So you have to teach your hand to keep moving. Look alive. Stay on your toes. haha :)

    Great advice! Pen definitely forces you to focus more on the subject. I realize this exercise is pen only but, I would recommend a Uni-Ball Vision with a needlepoint tip. Pretty much the same as the V7 but waterproof. Just in case a person really would like to add a wash of color to a solid sketch. I sometimes use a brush pen. It satisfies the "drawing in ink" portion but also helps a person get more use to using a brush....leading to watercolors..or whatever painting medium. 😊

    Sketchbooks are by default a private matter. Nobody is obliging us to share them and I don't really know when sharing them became a trend in the first place, making our sketchbooks a call for perfectionism.
    Sketching is just a method to put on paper and in order what is going on in your mind, record what you see around you, practice or visualize an idea etc but it is for your eyes only.
    So your advice is great. Messing up with your sketchbooks is the only way to improve your skills and develop as an artist.

    This is great advice. I would call this a working sketch book or a real sketch book. The thing that is so popular now as a sketch book really should be called something else. My father was a painter. When he died he left behind over 70 sketchbooks, the first from when he was 17. He drew every day of his life. He always carried a sketchbooks. His sketchbooks contain drawings, fragments of drawings, repeated practice of the same subject or detail, thumbnails of compositions, notes, ideas, lists. They are the key to understanding his progress and development as an artist. They are an insight into his passion and thought process. Many of the early ones are threepenny notebooks with ruled lines. They are all cheap 'throwaway' type books, which early in his life was an economic necessity, but also a deliberate decision so that he would not get 'precious' about the work he did in them.

      @JaredCullum  Před 4 lety +1

      Jo Snee wow- great insight. Thank you for watching. I have a couple going at once. The hardest part is getting over “wrecking” the inside pages so you can experiment and grow and just keep moving forward. This one I have for this exercise to sharpen but I also carry a cheaper one for everything. Ink drawings, notes, grocery lists- everything. I burn through those very fast. Thanks again- that’s really interesting to hear about your fathers’ process and it’s beautiful that that legacy and hand is carried on through those sketchbooks. I throw mine away but this makes me reconsider- because I would want my kids to have that part of me.

    I kind of had another experience when it came to getting over the fear of drawing in a nice expensive sketchbook. Because the book is so nice you want to make every drawing nice so you psyche yourself into not drawing sometimes or you just try to hard.
    So I picked up a super cheep sketchbook, or was actually given one for free, and we called it the Poop Sketchbook haha. So I freely drew what ever I wanted without any pressure and what I found was, I liked what I was doing in it much more than I did in my nice expensive sketchbook. Eye Opener, totally changed how I viewed drawing in my nicer sketchbooks and I've just gone from there.
    This is good advice though, and drawing from life is one of the first things I tell anyone young who asks about getting better at drawing. No reason to not have something to draw, if you can't think of anything, draw that lamp, or that book shelf, chances are you just need to warm up then your hands and brain will get on the same page and you'll be drawing just fine.

      Levi Simpson absolutely! You have to find your own path. I did both actually. I learned painting that way. Cheap dirt sketchbooks and tons of tons of terrible watercolor sketches because I was afraid of messing up the nice stuff. Obviously sub anything as long as your making marks on a page. True. The purpose of the “expensive” sketchbook is it raises the stakes. It forces you to get over drawing in one because if you can draw in a nice sketchbook you can pass that hurdle anywhere. If making the marks and not being attached to the individual draw isn’t a hurdle for you on your path then by all means go for the other bits :) either way- drawing directly from life with ink will drastically improve your drafting skill and the connection of your eye and arm. Brooklyn G I would recommend one focus on just the pen. Just studying the connection of your eye as arm and finding contour lines. Painting is still drawing but you can work out that muscle in different exercises. This is a jumpstart, best kept simple and efficient to maximize ones chances of getting the work done. It’s about quantity of sketches- not quality of sketches. You can, of course, do what you want- but if the goal is to improve drafting and open up in drawing- limitation is a big help in the same way painting with a very limited palette strengthens your ability to mix paint.

    Hey Jared, I have a question for you. I mostly draw people (from photos or life) using pretty much the technique you describe here. Recently, I've learned about two other techniques that people use for this - triangulation and the one where you think of the person as collection of 3d planes. How would you compare these three approaches? Should I bother dipping my feet into the other two?

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  Před 4 lety +1

      Fedor Ilitchev there are lots of different approaches to drawing. I definitely recommend trying different ones out. I typically reserve this type of drawing for exercise- like push ups or a jog. When I’m working on a landscape, though I draw very differently. I typically draw by thinking of the invisible lines that join objects together and Opt- instead of drawing the object/ drawing the shapes on and around the object. I definitely recommend exploring different techniques and thoughts. It will be hard and uncomfortable at first but as you increase in skill it will increase all of your drawing/seeing skills in general.

    I have a question - for Jared or anyone else reading who would like to lend me their thoughts. What really skyrocketed my drawing abilities in the last two years was erasing much less and sketching 1-3 big shapes to help guide me with what I am seeing and wanting to draw. So I always start with that.
    Jared, would you recommend sketching in these 1-3 shapes in light pencil first if I were to follow your method ? Would it defeat the purpose of your method?
    Also, do you recommend doing all your sketching following your method in this sketchbook? My goal for the summer is to push my sketching skills much further along and I have found in the past (while doing a 30 day fill a sketchbook challenge) that quantity over quality and not fussing too much over mistakes helps me progress. So, should all of my sketches be in this book? Hope this makes sense :)

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  Před 5 lety

      Melanie S absolutely. That is a very important skill and a different exercise. This exercise is more about loosening up and also improving accuracy of those big shapes. If you want my video on simplifying a scene you’ll see I often draw in that method when I’m doing other things. Simplifying a scene to the major shapes and only working on adjusting the value of those relationships before subdividing smaller.
      This video is not intended to be the end all for drawing and there’s been some confusion (and angry messages.. haha) about that. This is simply an exercise to improve eye/arm coordination, seeing and to get the pen moving on the page while exploring different Mark making tools.
      I think one would benefit from practicing this exercise and working in a different sketchbook on what you’re describing or combine the two. Everyone has their own path and I’m up for anything that gets people making art and improving their skill if that is something they are interested in.

    I disagree with several of the rules in this method. Firstly, it is silly you can't use an eraser. You learn a lot from critiquing your own work and then correct the errors accordingly. Secondly, I learn a lot from showing my sketchbook to my adult son, his critique is almost always spot on. Finally, I don't see any point in buying a very expensive sketchbook. While you are learning an Arteza sketchbook or the like will definitely suffice in my opinion. Finally, I don't understand why using reference photos shouldn't be used. It's just a silly rule without any meaning.

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  Před 4 lety

      Sorry you feel the rules for this exercise are silly. It doesn't sound like my channel is a fit for you. This is just 1 exercise that every rule is thoughtfully considered. I have other exercises I do in which I use an eraser. This particular exercise is meant to learn to abandon attachment to individual drawings and free yourself to draw more often. The same goes for not showing it. It's so you can work free of considering others opinions or perfection. Learn to enjoy the process. The same applies for the nicer sketchbook, for this exercise only. I have many sketchbooks I use for everything from daily drawing to grocery lists. Drawing from life develops the brains ability to construct contour lines. The photograph crunches an image and does some of that work for you. It's about working through difficulty to increase skill. If you think my channel is "silly" I recommend you find a different channel you can enjoy.

    When you say 'contour' drawing, do you mean strictly without looking at the paper while drawing, or just not correcting marks you've made? Great advice BTW. Thanks!

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  Před 3 lety

      Kate Panthera hi Kate! Thanks for watching. When I say contour I mean looking- carefully studying the outside line of an object. The practice of not looking- as I understand it is “blind contour” but I’m not traditionally trained so I don’t know all the lingo. For this exercise I suggest not correcting anything. You are always correcting but this is more about learning how to use the mistake and not erase the mistake. It’s about quantity drawing- not trying to make 1 perfect drawing. The strength comes from repetitions of drawing and also abandoning attachment to individual drawings :) hope that helped

      @@JaredCullum Thank you so much Jared. One of the first things I learned about was blind contour drawing from the book "Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain". I suck at it and it frustrates me (!) so I'm happy to learn that your method is not that.

    personally, I like the cheap Stafford spiral bound sketch books, (there easier to keep open when sketching) lighter to carry around and no worries if they become damaged. I've had art teachers tell me the exact opposite, Buy a cheap sketch book because it takes the worrying away from damaging that expensive sketch. It's easier on the wallet too.

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  Před 4 lety +1

      Uncle Terry hi! Sure. For drawings in general. I carry cheap sketchbooks for thoughts and day to day work. This is not a “only draw this way forever” tutorial. This is one, singular exercise. I do this exercise from time to time and then being the lessons learned back to my daily driver sketchbooks. Sorry if it sounded like I was suggesting this is the only way to draw. I’ve had a number of angry emails about that- but that’s not what i meant.

    first off this is only my opinion but, this sounds like it will make you believe it is acceptable to do bad work and hide mistakes instead of bettering your work. but you are right about drawing everything any time you can.

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  Před 5 lety +2

      Malcolm Small hi Malcolm! Interesting thought and I see how you could think that. Having done this exercise myself I respectfully disagree. The practice is all about getting quantity over quality. It has more to do with breaking what binds one as an artist. I didn’t start drawing until I was 26 and have only been at it 8 or 9 years and this was instrumental in my developing. Now- it’s important to know it is an exercise. I should have stressed more that this is 1 exercise in developing drawing. I don’t mean to imply this alone will get you professional illustration contracts in a short amount of time. That would be like saying “you want to be a body builder? Just do bicep curls every day.” It’s an important fundamental exercise. It is the daily treadmill run that leads you to run the marathon so that when you release those limitations and introduce pencil/eraser, for example, you have all this ability to focus to see clearer and lay in drawing more clearly.
      Some of the things this is specifically suppose to put you against may be old hat for you, also, if you have found your own way. Like freezing up at a blank page or not drawing from life or simply not drawing enough.
      Just some thoughts. Thank you for yours. I appreciate you watching.

      What is the time-stamp- I made this a while ago and I'm not sure what I was talking about at the time. The idea of this is to just draw everything you see from life with no eraser as an exercise in moving past attachment to individual drawings and increasing drafting skill.

    Does this learning process also hold true. To someone who does not think of them self as a "ARTEST". Just someone who like to doodle or Jurnaling also. Yes I took art in high school but I did not understand a bit of it. I mean to sit there and listen to people that draw and talk about. All of these things really makes me go loopy I just can not take it all in. In the way they are teaching it. have a really bad learning disability and I also have Anxiety and Social Anxiety all my life. But I have found that I do like to Jurnal and Doodle. To help my mind and to help my Anxiety to come down.

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  Před 5 lety

      S&Tguy hi! Thank you for watching. Yes- the side benefit is that it will improve your skill but actual skill in realism isn’t the only goal. The “lessons” have to do with loosening up, letting yourself get lost in the drawing. I am not a professional, when it comes to anxiety and can’t advise. I think if you get going and drawing in ink is causing anxiety I think you shouldn’t push it, of course. I hope you can find a meditative rhythm with it though. Part of the reason you use a pen is to limit the “perfection” capability. The structure or boundaries give you a place to work and grow in. But if it bothers you, by all means, it may not be part of your journey. I find it a great warm-up or addition to journaling. I have writing friends that write in ink only, 3 pages a day free-thought. It’s almost exactly the same exercise. Think of it like fishing. Each drawing you just cast a line out. Sometimes you nail something you wouldn’t expect and often nothing comes back but it’s more about communing with nature and relaxing. Good luck- I’m here to talk shop if you ever want :)

      They sell them at Target... :) You can just accidentally drop one in the cart and be like "oops, guess I have to fill it with fantastic drawings now.. " :) The Stillman sketchbooks are really good. I know it's obnoxious to suggest an "expensive" sketchbook but it is part of the exercise in forcing yourself to abandon the attachment to a sketchbook and individual drawing and see it for what it is. You can better use it as a tool then, once you can get past the hurdle of worrying about whether or not the paper matters. Good luck! I'm in your corner and I'm always here for inspiration/encouragement. :)
