Oscars are not given according to box offices, or public appreciation of movies, they are evaluated by selected judges.
it was released in the us, just not widely. but the right people saw it and loved it and, ergo, Oscar nom. It's so fantastic.
There are festivals that qualify as Oscar eligibility, provided you win. A limited release will work as well.

This movie is so underrated oh my gosh
Such a sweet movie, a well told story with a real emotional core.
Still don’t get why Neon waited for so long to release it… …but to say I cannot wait to finally see it is an understatement.

Now THIS is how you do it! The film's UK distributor (my neck of the woods) used a humongously spoilery trailer, then essentially shrugged off the release of this film as a half-hearted limited release. But Neon rose to the challenge of how to keep promoting the film excitingly by making a trailer of their own, rather than a direct translation of a pre-existing one, that only implies rather than spoils. Great job, Neon! Meanwhile, USers, please please please consider seeing this when the film releases on May 31st and give this film all the love and attention it deserves. It truly deserves it, just as it deserves to have a life beyond having an Oscar nomination.

looks good but the observant side of me was more observant to when this movie takes place then I seen the world trade center in the background and I thought to myself probaly 1980`s or 1990`s. I might see it, depends.
