    Skibbereen, is a town in County Cork, Ireland. It is located on the N71 national secondary road. The name "Skibbereen" (sometimes shortened to "Skibb") means "little boat harbour". The River Ilen runs through the town; it reaches the sea about 12 kilometers away, at the seaside village of Baltimore. As of the Census of Ireland 2011, the population of the town (not including the rural hinterland) was 2,568.

    Beautiful. My daughter threw a bottle in the ocean at Shoal Bay, Newfoundland a few years back and it was found in this area a year later by a family with the surname of Mullins.

    my great-grandfather left Skibbereen for Australia in the early 1900's. Name was Jeremiah Donovan. i wonder if i have family still there.

      The Olympic rowing champion's the O'Donovan brothers are from Skibereen, possibly related.

    I remember visiting Skibbereen some years ago. The ocean must be very close by because I know we visited there also.

      The ocean is 4 miles away at a place called Tragumna. I spent many happy evenings at Tragumna beach.

    I've been to Skibbereen back in 2000. We stayed in a youth hostel a bit out of town which used to be a mill, I think. I wonder if it's still there and in use...
