    I'm a RAKA and use hand controls. Hand controls that you PUSH to brake are much safer than controls you PULL to brake. When you need to stop quickly, your body tends to move forward. If you need to PULL the brake lever back towards you you are going against the forward motion of your body.
    If you're moving forward and PUSHING forward on the control you're taking advantage of your centrifugal force to help you brake. If you had both legs, you'd PUSH with your foot to brake so your subconscious reaction you've used for years is to PUSH to brake. PULLING to brake requires you to reprogram your brain. Your natural reaction is to PUSH, NOT PULL

    So glad I found these hand controls. A neurological condition left my legs weak & numb, so driving has been a bit scary. During a relapse, I panicked & threw my car into park to avoid bumping the car in front of me at a drive-thru. I forgot about the emergency brake, and throwing it into park caused it to make a horrible sound. After a few more close-calls, I did a search. Thanks for this video. Being right-handed, I installed mine "backwards" as well, and it's a very comfortable drive. What a difference!

      I had the same experience throwing my car into park!! The transmission made a awful sound, this happened 3 times! The drive thru's were very difficult.

  • @UnsolicitedThoughtsOfARose

    The hand controls you have give me hope that I might be able to drive one day! All the other stick ones I’ve seen look very challenging for me.

    You may have noticed that I've installed these backwards. I've done this because I have greater control of the braking function by using my entire hand pulling the handle towards me, rather that one or two fingers pushing it. This doesn't interfere with the way the controls function.

    • @msebel
      @msebel Před 7 lety +3

      Al: This is fighting the laws of physics. When you stop, inertia continues to pull you forward. The faster you stop, the harder this forward "force" feels, making it more and more difficult to apply the pulling toward you force to brake when you're set up backwards.

      hi Al. I'm a quadriplegic and have the quick stick name brand setup. I am a quadriplegic with limited arm and hand movement. One way or another I'm gonna drive. The setup I'm running doesn't seem to be as nice as this one. I am going to get what you have and set it up anyway I can in order to drive. Braking is my biggest problem especially if you need to instantly. I am going to drive one way or another. when I get enough money I'm going to order that kit and if I can't get it working right I'll hit you up for some advice on how I can get it working right for me. nice video thumbs-up

    Glad to see the controls working out for you.... Ive been driving over 25 years with "hand controls" as a wheelchair user.... I also race, drift, and do some crazy stuff...
    You are ABSOLUTELY using these controls in an unsafe manner..... Not trying to sound harsh, but safety first.... as someone else commented on the law of physics.. here's a question: Why would you use two fingers in a reverse manner to push the brake down? Perhaps you can speak with a driving instructor well versed in mobility aids... I'd hate to say it, but I'm pretty sure you could NOT post a video of you locking up the breaks mimicking a deer or an accident in front of you...
