    Thank you for reminding everyone just how awful X-Play was. When all the fans cry now about "why did Bandai stop porting Gundam games in the west? They must hate money and are terrible at business!" Remember to blame Adam Sessler and his particular brand of hateful content toward all things Japanese.

      It's such a shame, since X-Play in the 2000s was one of the few ways to actually get game reviews in a reliable sense if you didn't care for magazines or early internet. Overall their game reviews hit the mark when it came to the best games of the year and they had charm indictive of the era, but they very clearly had a bias against smaller/JP games for sure.
      Not to mention the hosts they chose aged like milk in more ways than one.

    A lot of the issue is spurred on by the success of Armored core VI. While also being under the same Bandai umbrella, you somehow have rushed feeling games that are only wasted potentials instead of fully realised games in their own right, or even only rely on star power of certain MS that are included in a below-average title that's only made for a limited, japanese audience.
    One idea of fixing this issue would probably be to make a timeline that is dedicated to a game instead of dedicating a game to a timeline. That way, you're able to design your MS around the gameplay mechanics instead of creating game mechanics to fit around the limiting concept that has been established since 40+ years ago. It's also a way we don't have to watch 0079 in a different graphical fidelity, but gets us to experience Gundam in a way that is interactive and fresh. A vague example being the Wii's MS Sensen 0079 - that had its own story, even if it included the original story as a bonus.

    • @theshirtlad
      @theshirtlad  Před 5 měsíci +10

      Good points. I'd say that the way budgets are allocated in the general AAA scene is also one of the culprits to such a phenomenon, since in a lot of ways, steeper budgets dis-incentivize risks and experimentation.

      @@theshirtlad indeed. Although, you can make a game where it does have a pretty safe gameplay system - but just done with a higher polish.

      Fast paced gundam game with wide MS selection already exists since a decade ago. It's just locked in the form of 2v2 PvP.
      Check out the Extreme VS series. PS4 got the arguably most balanced iteration ported on all regions. If you got a PC almost every other iteration can be played whether through emulation or just straight up p*r*cy.
      Seriously check it out, it's not without reason that the series has been going strong on JP arcade for over 10 years.

      In a lot of ways, i'd say that Battlefield Record 0081 gets close, given the degree of customization and the feel of the movement. The roster isn't as big as the one of Assault Survive, but it is still fairly hefty.
      If speed and responsiveness is a priority, Climax U.C. and the Gundam vs. Games(RvZ II, GvG Next plus and EXVS titles) should be more up your alley. I suppose SD Gundam Gashapon wars would also count, given its roster size and relatively simple, yet smooth combat, but i'm not sure whether you enjoy its blend of turf wars and wacky arena fights.
      Props to CannedHandle for beating me to it with the EXVS recommendation btw.

    I think the issue is even if the games folk ask for technically exist, people want it modern. They don't want to go back to the PS2 or PS3 or even older. Which I think is fair. Lots of western fans want to see a single player game with modern graphics, engaging story (that isn't just scenes between missions and a mission select menu), and fun combat. Make it so the suits have damage like the anime. You shoot a Zaku with a beam rifle and you can see a hole bore through it. Shoot off legs and arms and the head. Try to kill the pilot with a clean shot so it is mostly intact and salvageable, or aim for total destruction by shooting the nuclear reactor.
    Personally I think the One Year War would be a great setting for a RTS. Sure Gundam strategy exists, but it's always turn based tactics. I want real time. Age of Empires or Total War.

    @FightCain Před 5 měsíci +7

    One thing I gotta say out loud: OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOF on G4. That unlocked a tucked away memory. I really love Gundam vs Zeta Gundam but god dayum that review
    Also, I feel like most of the games that are considered "not good" (i.e. Zeonic Front and also considering any other games not gundam related) lies heavily in the fault of the player for not taking the time to learn the controls and gameplay. I suck at Gihren's Yabou because I have a brainsize of a pea, and managing resources isn't my strong suit. But, I don't call the game "not good" because of it. I just need a bit more time to understand it (and regain braincells). I kinda blame the simplification of controls over the years for that kind of thought process.
    I am not saying that there are no bad games. There are plenty of actually "not good" games like Ride to Hell Retribution or many modern sports games.
    I love the MS Sensen game on the Wii and I also happen to have two flight sticks and a rudder pedal. Man, it was a blast playing that game on Dolphin Emulator. It was like playing that arcade game where you're inside the cockpit. My control scheme was left stick is movement, right stick is aim, rudder pedals for boost (I also mapped rudder yaw to aim left and right). For melee combat, I had to use the && function so moving the stick in a direction and a HOTAS button on the right stick was mapped to swinging. Absolute worth the effort.
    Another fun game I played was at the AEON mall in Narita around 2003ish. They had a medal drop game where you could use those medals as ammunition for an SD gundam coinshooter game. and that was hella fun. For anyone wondering, just copy this to search ガンダムメダルシューティング (I did not know there was seed version).
    One thing I wish in modern gundam vs gundam games is probably music and more references. Maybe even dynamic finish similar to DBZ fighterz.
    It must be a licensing nightmare but I would like to have Flying in the Sky and Trust You Forever in the same game (I haven't played past Full Boost)
    My style of Gundam is mostly in the 1 year war that's closer to a simulator or have MS move with more weightyness like in Gundam vs Zeta Gundam (also Space battles), rather than having hectic movements like in Gundam Maxiboost or something.
    Hell, I'll even take Another Century Episode game but gundam.
    Battle Operation 2 exists but the biggest motivation killer is the camera. Normally in a TPS, you could switch sides but they still haven't implement that yet, so it makes big body MS a bit less enjoyable to play.
    But yeah,
    These games are totally not going to get ported over to PC anytime soon.
    In addition, gundam is pretty niche. Many anime watchers may have heard of it (or never at all) but it's like at the back of their minds,
    and One Piece is currently a hot topic because it's apparently coming to an end.
    Even if Witch of Mercury S3 comes out, I highly doubt majority of anime watchers would think about it outside of reacting to it.
    The best bet for Gundam to really spread here in the States and everywhere else today, is to release Gundam Extreme vs 2 on consoles,
    as I feel like fighting games are good for short, high paced action. But even then, that's pretty tough competition.
    If G4 never existed,
    maybe Toonami would've carried the gundam games torch in the US, where in an alternate universe, bandai decides to localize SRW for US (probably not lol).
    I am lucky enough to have time to visit japan. And Japan is absolute ballers in the used game market. I don't even have to go to a special retro store just to get some pretty cool bangers (book off is pretty sufficient).
    To everyone else, I don't condone piracy but....
    yeh.

    It's weird to see Gundam v Zeta Gundam being hated at all, considering it's always been my favorite Gundam game and I daresay it's a great entry point to get people to watch UC Gundam. I watched 0079 and Zeta after playing that game as a kid. I even prefer it to Rengou v ZAFT because the slower gameplay in GvZ feels more balanced to me. You can't play a Survival Mode arcade on the mechanics of Rengou v ZAFT.

I recently downloaded an emulator to play the Gundam Unicorn game for the ps3 and I’m absolutely loving it, from the sound design, the impact of the weapons, the sense of weight I get from the mobile suit’s movements, etc. A game like that but with AC6’s graphics would be an absolute DREAM. I've been playing a lot of Mechwarrior online recently, and since Gundam evolution died I have considered trying out Gundam battle operation, since it seems to be a Gundam equivalent to MWO, but I heard the steam launch was disastrous and that you get new mechs through a gacha, so, maybe not.
    Plus, half the fun of mech games in my experience is tinkering with mech builds, which doesn't feel like a possibility with Gundam.

      Ive been playing gbo2 for years on PlayStation, so I can tell you about obtaining the mobile suits.
      The gatcha it's pretty generous and there's regularly events were you get free pulls or outright they give you for free powerful MS.
      Outside it has two separate shops that aren't gatcha :
      The recycle tickets shop which features a weekly lineup of Ms, you'll need to exchange recycle tickets which you obtain when you pull a duplicate on the gatcha.
      Then there's the Dp shop which contains the bulk of the MS of the game. You can trade for the especific MS by using DP a which is obtained in bulks after completing any match. As you level up you'll unlock more access to more MS.
      When something it's in the gatcha it will appear at some point in the recycle shop and after a long time it's moved into the DP shop.
      It's customization is not as big as mech warrior but you can somewhat customized them buy, using items that add modifiers and in some MS you can swap their primary weapon and their melee weapons.
      Sorry for the long testament.😂

      GB02 makes the mobile suits feel like 90 y.o. arthritic grannies, mobile suits should feel fast and nimble, just as they are in the lore. Another big problem of GB2 is that the maps are too small and the matches are too short. Basically the only 2 thing that GB2 does right is that it allows you to play on foot, and gives you something to do while on foot, wich gives makes you feel like you're piloting a robot.

    • @Tigery760
      @Tigery760 Před 5 měsíci +1

      I really dislike GBO2. I get it's a realistic Sim with gacha mechanics, but it's just slow and the pc port is trash.
      The Arcade-iness of the movement and graphics would be much better if the game had a story mode.
      I loved Evolution though. Mobile Suits felt as fast as they are shown in the anime, and it was actually fun when compared to GBO2. Really only died because of the mismanagement of the higher ups, but the devs made something really special there. If it were given a bit more funding and time I'm sure it would've been amazing to play today. Whenever the custom servers go up ima be playing that for a good while.
      I do think a realistic GBO2 style game could work extremely well in VR though. Given how much of a "simulator" it is and the slowness of the mecha it just fits right in. It's not everyday you get to pilot a Mobile Suit using a VR. GunEvo wouldn't work as well in VR, given the fast paced nature, unless you yourself are the machine. Actually it could kinda work for some mecha.

    I would love to see a modern incarnation of games like Gundam Battle Universe and its ilk. The last one of those that we got was on the Vita (Gundam Seed Battle Destiny and a Macross title I can't remember the name of). It doesn't need to be one-to-one the same thing, I'm just looking for that vibe, As hard as it is to explain what I mean in real words. The buttery-smooth game-flow, stat modulation And option parts to customize to your playstyle, The intricate unit evolution system that incentivizes putting a lot of time into a lot of units...I yearn for it...
    I wouldn't say we're doing too terribly in terms of the quality of games Most of the time... It only feels really bad right now because The particular titles that are on Steam are...rough. GBO2's Netcode is unacceptable In the eyes of PC gamers, New Breaker is peak Kusoge, Cross Rays Is one of the weaker GGen titles, and G-Evo was such a non-event that It got shut down in less than a year. SD Battle Alliance being fun, yet forgettable stings all the more When you consider the PS3 and PS4 titles that would easily thrive on Steam if effort was put into porting them.
    ...at least we've got Breaker 4 On the way, but that's probably going to be a Fall release, so we've still got quite a lot of time to wait for "Peak Gundam Gaming: 8 Years in the Making"

    I'm of the opinion that Gundam Battle Operation 2 is one of the best Gundam games I've ever played. Al be it only on the PC version. It has major flaws, like the completely broken matchmaking causing you unable to match for games / match with friends / play ranked with friends. It forces you to play SOLO as it's only way to get matched properly into games.
    It's the one of the few gundam games where you actually do all the aiming/shooting/fighting yourself and the mobile suits actually feel and control like heavy mobile suits and it does great to make you feel good piloting the suits and shooting the weapons and doing melee attacks. That said I wish there was a game that played like GBO2, but had a campaign or more PVE / CO-OP modes.
    GBO2 is a PVP game so it's very competitive so I wished for a game that plays the same but with the option to do PVE content. Althought I enjoy the competitive pvp nature of the game.
    Every other gundam game is mostly a beat-em-up like the Dynasty Warrior Gundam games, or games like SD Gundam Battle Alliance, with auto-targeting and very basic weapon control. I've watched videos of the Gundam Breaker series but other than the customization the gameplay and visuals just look so incredibily bland. The versus games are fun but get really stale really quick imo and I'm just not a fan of all the auto-targeting combat in general.
    Gundam Evolution was a nice try to bring gundam in the FPS genre and i applaud them because I really enjoyed my time in Evolution while it was up. It's unfortunate it had to die within a year but people are working on private servers.
    The developers of Gundam games just never come up with new creative things, it's mostly the same style games.

    • @theshirtlad
      @theshirtlad  Před 9 dny +1

      Contrary to what you might think, there are, in fact Gundam games that get creative with their stuff.
      The options on PC generally go from lackluster(NGB) to neat(cross rays, GBO2), but the general landscape is pretty wide to cover almost every niche.
      You should try Gundam Assault Survive. It's a single-player PSP game with a hefty roster. The MS feel is closer to GBO Next than GBO2 and while there is lock-on aiming, you've got manual options too. It's pretty easy to emulate too.
      As far as a 1:1 PvE GBO2 goes, most we get is Code Fairy which, while pretty good, is stuck on PS4/PS5

      I'd say the former somewhat suffered from Okouchi's usual writing gimmicks. He's a decent writer, don't get me wrong, but in a lot of his stories, such as WfM, or even Code Geass, he tends to be less than stellar in certain departments.
      I don't know what ultimately caused Season 2's pacing issues, but the final product ended up worse for it regardless.
      As for the latter, i do understand the sentiment, with some of the newer releases not being up to par or feeling lackluster, with a handful of great entries thrown into the mix as well.
