Hey guys! Here's a little bit of info to clear things up. It's a common practice for people to be given honorary titles, especially when they're celebrities, artists or renowned individuals. (ex. 'Super Star' Rajinikanth, 'Ulaganayagan' Kamal Haasan). In the cinema industry, the title is sometimes created as a marketing/identifying tool or given by fans. Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar is the Vijay in this song. He started as a child artist in 1984, but wasn't a main lead until 1992. In 1991, the movie 'Thalapathy', directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Rajinikanth, came out. Rajini was a huge star already and Vijay had commented on having been a huge fan. 'Thalapathy' means leader or commander. Vijay was credited with the title 'Ilayathalapathy' in 1992, meaning young leader/commander, as a sort of foreshadowing/parallel/nod. In 2017, his director at the time and him decided to drop the 'Ilaya' and go with just 'Thalapathy'. By this time, Vijay was extremely popular, not so young anymore and was a senior in the industry. So it made more sense. On the other hand, Vijay Sethupathi, the other popular Vijay, started acting in 2004 in small/uncredited roles and got his first lead in 2010. His title is 'Makkal Selvan', meaning 'people's son/treasure' kind of like saying 'Our boy/Boy next door', but he usually gets credited with just his name.

and is equivalent to prabhu deva IMO although not so much pop and lock that prabhu does cuz vijay has his unique MO and they are of course very good friends... they are both very shy very talented dancers
Saw this movie in dolby Naga Theatre, Bangalore in 2003 which is now defunct and no longer there, the movie that changed Vijay's image amongst the masses & he was the brash, charismatic & flamboyant Vijay till 2010 which the fans loved, from 2011 he's toned down his mass level, he's still the same but he no longer does the mass elements in his 30s.
Rick by the way, that dance was one of my teenage days rage, we did that in our classes.
