    Not the best review, comparing the weight of the doors weight to German cars so called premium feel, for a start mazda make the 2 from high tensile steel, its 30 percent lighter but stronger than standard galvanised steel. This makes it more agile, more economic, faster to brake. All mazda cars from the 2 upwards are designed to be fun to drive unlike let's say your average polo. There is a difference between perceived quality and actual quality, no vw group car has beaten any mazda in any reliability index published for over a decade. If you value a soft touch dashboard over reliability, economy and agility stick with vw audi mercs and BMW, personally I like a car that fun to drive ultra reliable and economical over a soft touch dash, each to their own.

    I took delivery of my new car two weeks ago a UK spec 115hp Nav Sport with the safety pack. A few observations: Feels like a much bigger car than the predecessor which I previously owned, quieter, more refined, bigger inside and out. Haven't really tested the performance yet, fuel consumption is lower but then I'm driving much slower at the moment until the car loosens up. Plenty of technical kit, better lights smaller (thinner) cross section on the tyres than the mark 2 Sport. Issues: Tedious dashboard rattle (slight) but it shouldn't be there, poor three quarter visibility offset by some of the safety kit, when climbing into the car the seat bolster bends (I weigh 85kg), at 183cm my left knee rubs against the central console, although the seat pulls back much further than the previous model. Sound system is adaptable can play from almost any source but the sound is a bit thin. Suburb gearbox, superior clutch action than the previous model, on the whole a good package and despite some of the niggles fun to drive doesn't feel under powered. I'd give it 7.5 out of 10.

    Even I'm driving my new Mazda2 for 2 weeks now it's still nice to see this good review! You are correct about the horsepower, too bad it didnt fit my budget to take the 115hp so I have the 90hp. But I'm thinking to change something to the exhaust, I read somewhere that's the main difference between the 2 versions. With chiptuning you only get 10hp extra. And it needs lowering springs in my opinion, also for the looks :)
    About those knobs for AC etc, the lower editions have the simple knobs. To me they don't feel that cheap as you showed here in the vid. Probably the simple one is a better construction. Those GT-Ms do look better imo

    Wunderbare review as always guys! Love how in depth you go into your reviews, even the smallest details, you don't rush, you speak calmly, very German basically, I like that. Build quality is something the Japanese and Koreans need to catch up on, despite the fact people claim they have improved, in hindsight, they haven't improved quick enough to regain sales. During the 80's and 90's, the Japanese had their hay days, but since the Yenn has got stronger against the pound and euro, their cars are becoming more expensive, and they have cut corners. Compare this to even a Polo and the quality is very noticeable in the Polo. Using stainless steel screws and plastics, switches and buttons which feel tough and durable all together adds up to quite a bit of money, but considering there is actually a small price difference, the Polo is better value for money, considering you are getting a car of such better quality, and a car designed better in terms of visibility and seat comfort. That slopping roofline and shrinking windows towards the rear is only good for looks but hampers usability. That is what I admire about Volkswagen. They haven't gone for that approach, but still styling cars that look classy and modern, but minimalist enough so that usability isn't compromised. Although this is a stylish car, and interesting engine line up with larger displacement engines, it wouldn't stop me from getting a Polo or Fabia if I was in that market. Korean car manufactures have slowed down in the UK recently and Toyota have had decreasing sales for 56 years running now, they are even thinking of pulling out Lexus from the UK. Volkswagens for me every time !

    I love your comprehensive review. Thanks guys! Although I must say that with all due respect to your comments, nothing beats Japanese reliability. I believe that this's a decisive factor in buying or leasing a car. This is the reason why Japanese cars have hold their share even though they haven't been that great in terms of design, technology and enteriors. Nowadays, however, they're moving with the times and trying to catch up with Europeans at very competitive prices as we see in this awsome review. Thanks again for the outstanding job.. cheers from SA :)

    Great review. I was wondering about the tires on your version. I have been looking at the sportblack which is closer to the SE-L in spec. The sportblack comes with 16 inch alloys, unlike the Se-L. Some reviewers have said the 16 inchers are to be avoided as they create a bumpy ride especially on urban streets. Did your model have 16inch wheels? Do you think it would be better to ask the dealer to replace the 16 inch with 15 inch for a smoother ride (though this will cost me). I don't want the SE-L as it does not have some of the key features I like (automoatic headlights, wipers, reversing sensors).

    Was ich mir für die Zukunft wünsche:

    Great review, especially cuz it is a depth in review, I like that you covered all the small details. I own Mazda 2 from 2009, 1,3 petrol with 75 horse power and I can immediately tell you that nothing much has changed. Maybe they have a slightly improved engines and some new design lines, but in fact it is the same car. I don't like how they copy BMW or Audi in some segments. I see that they still didn't do much on fixing the cheap plastic issues. This model shouldn't be representative since it is full equipment and has leather seats. I am tall person, 193 cm or 6'4'' and literally no one taller than let's say 180 cm can sit behind me comfortable, so if you're looking for practicality in the back it is better to buy used Mazda 3 than buy brand new 2 and spend 15k or even more :-)

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  Před 9 lety

      ***** Actually you are totally right with the choice imho. Those two might be taking the lead together as we can rate from our reviews. I think the personal taste will matter and the individual seating position. I would recommend to take a test ride at both dealers each so you can e.g. check how your body fits to the seat and which car gives you the better impression. As for me personally, I would be fine with the Mazda2 but I probably would give the Fabia a little advantage as I am more content with the style in exterior, interior and the refinement of the interior. I more like the "clean" surrounding there. Qualitywise both should be very good and they offer good price/performance.

    Hey awesome review! But can you tell me how smooth and responsive the automatic transmission is? I am torn between this and Ford fiesta and I'm hearing that the fiesta's AT gear change has been clunky. Is this different? Is it responsive enough to be fun in highway but smooth enough to be as comfy as swimming in vanilla? I live in a city plagued with traffic jams so a manual isn't an option :(
    Thanks!

      +Scott Summers Sorry I did not test the automatic gear box there, but so far, the new automatic gear boxes that Mazda uses were all pretty fine. I would always go for the automatic gear box solution. About this or Fiesta, I like here that they have the naturally aspirated petrol engine and also the car feel more spacious in the front. The Fiesta however has more space in the rear and in the trunk imho

    Great review! Still the best in the internet to the date! Im buying a new car at the price range of this (fiesta, polo, yaris etc.) and I must say I really like this little thing. Would you recommend this as a first car for a student? The main focus would be reliabilty as my income wont allow me to spend thousands for repairs annually. I also think cars like huyndai i20 or toyota yaris feel just a bit too casual and I would really appreciate the little luxury the mazda 2 offers. But I would be greatful for your opinion as a car expert unlike me :)

    Thank you for your detailed review. Greetings from Malta. I really enjoyed watching it :). I am still undecided between the new Mazda 2 and the Toyota Yaris. My concern here is fuel consumption. This is because in Malta we get a lot of traffic and not much long journeys to do. The longest trip in Malta to get from one place to other is 30-45 minutes max without traffic. I am still debating between a Mazda 1.5 90hp or a Yaris 1.33 99hp. From your tests what is the real mpg that the Mazda 2 managed to do please?

    Yo people (and most press) allways comparing any car with the "German high quality standards" as world reference starts to be ridiculous. The door lighter that a VW Polo door is an (light) weight and eficiency advance, not a quality fault. The direction, the driving, feeling, sharpness and handling of any modern Mazda is quite better that any VW in their respective competitor model to Mazda. And then the mecanical reliability. Uncomparable.
    A new Polo and this Mazda 2, in 5 years, both with the same care and treatment, i bet the Mazda will never need tu use is (superior, 5 year) warranty. But the Polo, as many VW, will.
    The only issue (not a problem) is that it will be a 100% perfect car if it had a turbo in the petrol motor... Even so, this Mazda 2 is now the best of his class. In driving pleasure, and that´s a lot.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  Před 9 lety +1

      Alex Silva Thanks for your feedback. Indeed we often take the German cars as reference for quality look-and-feel, and that's just for the customer feeling just right. You are right that this doesnt say anything about the long-term reliability

    • @jdmboy1836
      @jdmboy1836 Před 7 lety

      Alex Silva Well said. I agree with your centiments. As I write this the Auto Express magazine Driver Power survey 2017 has been published and guess which car scores poorly for reliability and build quality? Yes the VW Polo and its sister car the Audi A1 was even lower placed. Fact is German cars have great percieved quality out of the showroom, but the reality further down the line is quite different. Satisfaction surveys always testify this. Mazda consistently outperforms VW in the AE Driver Power manufacturer league table and by quite a margin actually.

    About the engine choises, isnt the difference between the 75, 90 and 115 hp editions of the 1,5 liter petrol only at the top end? In that case you will actually not feel any difference between them, if you are driving on a motorway and want to accelerate in top gear from 80 or 100 km/h.
    The 75 hp engines is only for the "Core" model, which is to bare and only really there to offer a low starting from price. It does not even have airconditioning. So that one is irrelevant. But I think most people wont really notice the difference between the 90 and 115 hp versions, since they dont take their engine above 4.000 rpm anyway.
    And about this lacking power... Well.... This car is lighter than the previous generation and nearly all its competitors. And at the same time they have replaced the 1,3 liter engine with a 1,5.
    This is the only car in the segment now to offer a 1,5 liter naturally aspirated engine. Other manufacturers like Peugeot, Toyota, Suzuki and Kia/Hyundai offer 1,2 to 1,4 liter naturally aspirated engines, which all have less torque than this.
    Also the 1,2 liter 90 hp TSI engine from the VW Group only produce 160 nm of torque. So is the torque/weight ratio really any better in the Polo or the new Skoda Fabia than in the 90 hp Mazda 2? I am not sure, it is. The new 1,0 liter turbo Corsa has 175 nm of torque. But it is also a very heavy car. So then again....
    It would be interesting to see a more scientific test of this issue like comparative 60-100 km/h time in 4. gear and 80-120 km/h time in 5. gear.
    Anyway as with all naturally aspirated engines you probably will want to use the gearstick a bit more and eg. put the car in 4. gear, if you are stuck behind a truck on a motorway and pull out to overtake. So if you do a lot of long motorway journeys, maybe its better to go for the 105 hp diesel instead, which will allow you to stay in top gear more of the time.

    • @brunoluong7972
      @brunoluong7972 Před 9 lety

      The 75 hp has a lower compression ratio 12:1, the other two has 14:1.
      The two lower end engines are somewhat locked and do not provide enough torque when reeving up (above 4000 RPM)
      The 115hp engine has shorter final gear ratio which in turn give 10-20% more torque at the wheel for the same gear.

    • @andrewshore262
      @andrewshore262 Před 9 lety +1

      +Bruno Luong There is a big difference between the 90 HP and the 115 HP not just on the motorway but everywhere if you drive reasonably quickly. I currently drive the predecessor Mazda 2 Sport 1.5 petrol 100 HP, taking delivery of the new 115 HP sport nav with the optional safety pack (£400 in the UK) in 10 days, test drove the new 90HP and 115HP one after the other, the 90HP is much slower than my present vehicle, the 115hp a little bit faster but much smoother and much more refined. Great test good to see Germanic attention to detail excellent!

    • @brunoluong7972
      @brunoluong7972 Před 9 lety

      +Andrew Shore Do you pay attention to the mileage of the cars you test drove? The engine usually gets better performance after a thousand miles. I know because I own the 115 hp.

    • @Digi20
      @Digi20 Před 9 lety

      +fundiver198 i can give you some performance figures from german AMS magazine, the mazda 115 skyactiv easily beats all the small turbo cars when you push the engine, 0-160kmh:
      fiesta 1.0 ecoboost 100hp: 37seconds
      hyundai i20 1.4 101hp: 37seconds
      kio rio 1.4 109 hp: 35seconds
      mazda 2 115hp: 25seconds
      opel corsa 1.0 115hp: 35seconds (heaviest)
      skoda fabia 1.2 110hp: 30seconds
      and 80-120kmh, best gear(s):
      fiesta 8.8 seconds
      hyundai: 9 seconds
      kia: 8.6 seconds
      mazda: 6.7 seconds
      opel: 8.6 seconds
      skoda: 7.5 seconds
      consumption was around the same for all the cars (6.4 to 7 liters)

    • @Digi20
      @Digi20 Před 9 lety

      oh and you should feel a difference between the 90 and 115 hp versions even at moderate RPMs. Torque is the same, but the power output is linear different, they did not just cap it at a certain rpm, but you get more horses at any engine speed. plus the first five gears of the six speed box on the 115hp are shorter, which means more power at the wheels. sadly (at least here in germany) the 115hp engine is only availiable with the highest trim level, which brings you only 2000€ short of an Fiesta ST.
