One of the only cases where I do know that's the case is Metroid, as after Other M got backlash for its handling of the story, Samus Returns and Dread went back to being more like the older games and Nintendo and Sakamoto seem to be glad to just pretend Other M never happened. But at the same time despite people having gripes with Paper Mario: Sticker Star, Nintendo decided to evolve it's style of gameplay for Color Splash anyway. Origami King brings things more in line with older titles but still doesn't go full Thousand-Year Door-like yet.
@@BloodRedFox2008 Having Link talk, having Samus talk, doing live-action adaptations, doing anime adaptations, making a Star Fox game, the list goes on. It took them forever to open back up to the idea of having voice acting in Zelda games at all.

@@Bobb11881 If you're talking about the old Zelda cartoon or the CD-i games when you refer to "having Link talk," Nintendo didn't directly make those, those were things they only licensed out. The devs have said they never intend to have Link talk because he's meant to be the avatar for the player themselves (it's why his name is "Link" in the first place).

This single phrase can be applied to most of the entire franchise if you ask me. So many Sonic concepts left underdeveloped or unrefined.
sonic and mario could stand to swap design philosphies sometimes.
Mario does the same goddamn thing every time just polished to a fine sheen, and that's fantastic, but god I wish they'd be more willing to shake things up more nowadays.
Meanwhile Sonic is allergic to refining it's concepts and instead throws fifty individual cool ideas at the wall and rarely sticks to any of them, with maybe a slight concession given to Boost gameplay (but even then it's wildly different between games. The closest you get is Unleashed > Generations and maybe Forces, but the mission structure makes me weary there)

Literally a cool idea that also fits the character, and they've never gone back to it/nor have ideas to improve it.
I'm still waiting for another Spinball, and no. Sonic Pinball Party doesn't count at all
@@edfreak9001 Given that Mario's design philosophy leads to consistent, very well made games, why go for unnecessary "shaking up"? Not to mention that they do shake up, even if not to the extreme of Sonic. The Fludd in Sunshine, the gravity in the Galaxy games and the cap in Oddysey. Really only the New Super Mario Bros games lineup tend to recycle too much.

I like how every time Tails Doll appears Johnny finds him to be less of a threat, and more of an annoyance than the previous time.

It was funny to see Tails Doll return after so damn long, and even funnier with the returning Unknown Item sound. This man really puts so much fanservice into his reviews to appeal to longtime fans especially.

You don't know what loading screens are until you played Painkiller on PC from 2002. 5 minutes of waiting at the time! At least levels lasted over 30 minutes afterwards.

As a person who’s watched Johnny for 8-9 years, the Tails Doll brighten my day. I like how he’s not even treated with any real respect or danger.
Edit: Damn, now I have to play P1 and both P2’s for Johnny’s Persona Marathon, in who knows how long.
I guess having Sonic.EXE come in and utterly curb stomp the doll out of the creepypasta community in that time would do that. Poor doll is barely even talked about anymore. :(

Unfortunately, Sonic Team has this mentality that if it didn't worked once, it'll never work at all. Which is why we're getting an endless amount of Sonic Unleashed rehashes.

@@yungmuney5903 The problem is the execution. Games like Secret Rings and Black Knight would be a whole lot better if the player was given control. Lost World would've been better if it was just a Sonic Colors 2 and Forces would've been better if classic Sonic wasn't in it, and if wasn't trying to literally do everything Generations did.

Johnny you just highlighted the Biggest issue with this entire franchise and that is the lack of consistency. It seems Sega and Sonic Team only expands on an idea if they knock it out of the park in the first attempt. If it's anything less than perfect, if it's something that a good chunk of people don't jive with, then it's an idea that's never touched upon again.
- Sonic Shuffle doesn't do too well? No More Party games for Sonic.
- Sonic The Fighters does decent enough in Japan, they make a follow up on the GBA and that doesn't do too well, so no more Fighting games for Sonic.
- Sonic R doesn't do too hot? Sega doesn't touch the idea of On Foot Racing until the Sonic Rivals games on PSP, but because they don't sell at all basically, No more On Foot Racing for Sonic.
- Sonic Chronicles Bombs Hard? No more RPGs for Sonic
- Everyone likes Sonic Riders and Riders Zero Gravity but since the third game was a Kinect game that doesn't work, No more Air board racing for Sonic
- The Adventure Formula got a Decent run with Adventure 1, 2, and Heroes, and while I hate Shadow the Hedgehog, The game controls decent enough, but once 06 came and Nuked the entire franchise, No More Adventure Formula.
- Lost World attempts to bring back the Adventure Formula while mainly doing it's own thing with the Parkour system, While I liked the game, Most people didn't, so No more Parkour Sonic.
- The Boost games were great but Sega back peddles to that formula after Lost World doesn't do to well and since Forces showed what the Boost formula looks like at its worst, There's Most likely No more Boost Formula for Sonic.
Sega doesn't try to improve upon any ideas that get a majority of negative reviews, instead of learning from the criticism and making something better, The idea gets thrown out and onto a completely different idea. There is almost no consistency with this series and this mentality that Sega builds for themselves is the part of the reason why the Fanbase is so fractured on what makes a Good Sonic game. You got the camp that prefers the 2D games, The Camp that prefers the Adventure Era of games, The Boost games, The Story Book Games, The Dimps developed games, etc. I honestly do want to see what Sonic Team has planned for this Open World Idea for Sonic Rangers but Sega really just needs to get rid of this perfectionist mentality they have, Look back on the ten thousand ideas they made One-Shot attempts for, and just give them a second chance by improving on what didn't work. Make a Sonic Shuffle 2, Make a Sonic the Fighters 2 or Battle 2, Make a Sonic Riders 4, Make another Adventure Game or Lost World 2, See if Bioware is interested in making another Sonic RPG for consoles, Make Sonic R 2 or Rivals 3. The Ideas aren't bad, it's just the execution is hit or miss and to Sega, Miss=Completely abandon.
Oh man that is so telling, I would love to see another attempt of these games. The ideas took the franchise in a different direction and there is potential behind them too.

@@neosonic199 Now that you mention it, The Storybook games were I think the only time Sega released a Sonic game that did poorly and still tried to flesh out the idea. Secret Rings gets panned yet Sega went ahead and improved the on rails gameplay for Black Knight. The Sequel still wasn't received very well but it begs the question, If Sega were willing to try and salvage something from the On rails gameplay despite it failing in the first attempt, Why haven't they had the same kind of dedication with the rest of their spin-offs?
Apparently, SEGA were planning to remake Adventure 1 & 2, but only if Forces sold poorly.
@@neosonic199 if they were to make another RPG, I probably would have them get BioWare to make it. I would get someone that really knows RPGs and how they would work in the Sonic world, like Square or the team that made Bug Fables.

Back in 2019, I remember asking John on a Twitch QnA if he was ever gonna bring the Tails Doll back in his videos. He said he had one more video planned to complete the character's arc in the following year, and now we finally get to see that return here! Kind of crazy how the thing followed John all the way to Georgia probably just because he had nothing better to do. xD
I adore the art style of the special stages in 3D Blast's Saturn version. I'd love a whole sonic game that looks like that.

I remember the dream race event in Mario & Sonic at the olympic games (the ds version) was like a linear Sonic R.
But of course with the inclusion of mario character and powerups. Pretty good and simple.
I had the DS version. I played it so many times with all the characters I loved it.

Completely agreed, the Sonic Battle Art Style hits different.
The sprites are also the best in the series imo. It's not as easy to tell in motion, but if you ever freeze-frame and compare them to the Advance games you can see a clear jump in quality.

Honestly, I was really psyched to see Tails Doll again, hope he becomes a recurring character
I bet when Metroid Dread gets released and Johnny reviews it the "ScrewAttack" voice will return.
Man Johnny brought back all the old school gags for this one. The "unknown item" jingle and Tails Doll's return suddenly launched me into about a decade in the past.
For Shuffle's other attempt Secret Rings actually had a surprisingly well-fleshed out multiplayer party mode if that's any consolation. I quite enjoyed my time with that, though I also haven't played it since I was like 13 so who knows.
Sonic Spinoffs in a nutshell: It needs another attempt.
Out of all the Spin-Offs, Battle will always be my favorite. The art style, the story, the gameplay, everything is amazing.
I still own Sonic Battle, Sealed in prestined condition. I don't wann open it tho 🥺

I borrowed Sonic Battle from a neighbor once and it was the reason I broke my Gameboy Advance SP. I had fun going through the story (as frustrating as it was) but trying to unlock all of Emerl’s moves broke me (and the screen, fortunately for my neighbor, the game itself was not damaged).

Sonic the Fighters is interesting because it features 3D models of all the classic characters using their classic designs way before Sonic Generations came out, and that includes old Eggman, classic Amy, and oranger Tails
It's amazing that the Tails Doll followed Johnny to Georgia.

McMuscles Xtreme breakdown is pretty good but if you want a more in depth version I actually recommend Miiyouandmii2's 3 part series. It's quite fascinating I find.
He does get Christina Coffin's identity wrong, though. Guess she wasn't much of a public figure when those videos were made.
Seeing Johnny cover Sonic R again made me incredibly happy. That games needs some serious TLC and polish, heck, a remake maybe? I don't know but either way, thank you for this Sonic marathon, Johnny! Was fun. :)
All right, this is the second time this has been mentioned in one of his videos, what is the deal with Richard Jacques? Is there some kind of controversy with him?
Edit: did some digging, apparently Jacques didn't like Tee Lopes' remix of Can You Feel the Sunshine, and didn't like that he wasn't credited as the original creator of the song. While the crediting issue is justified, not only the that fall into the hands of Sega to handle, his comments were unnecessarily mean and spiteful. Bentley Jones later spoke up and stated that he was reportedly bullied by Jacques in the past as well, to the point that he had to get in touch with corporate.
I enjoy Tee Lope's remixes so that's a bummer to hear!

@@polocatfan I am very bad at Reading people sometimes, so I cannot tell if this is supposed to be sarcasm. Bad people can make good music or produce good media. With the world we live in, even and older times, it is a matter of trying to separate the art from the artist. Mind you, in certain context it would be very hard to do so, but I can in this regard. There are numerous songs and tracks that I adore by artists that I don't care for personally. It doesn't stop me from listening to some of their stuff.

And if someone's going to be a despicable, insufferable piece of human filth, then to me, the talent doesn't ultimately matter, when it's wasted on people that cause misery towards others, for the most arbitrary and fucked up reasons (or even actively contribute to things that do that, altogether).

Sonic the Fighters did make it over here as Sonic Championship, though cabinets were pretty rare. The giant arcade on the Las Vegas Strip had one back in the late 90s and I played it to death.

No matter what your feelings on sonic battle are we can all collectively agree on one thing: those sprites and animations are so damn good.
Loving the characterization in Sonic Battle so much, I gotta appreciate how you too weren't too thrilled with Amy in it. Nonetheless, I love this game, it's soundtrack and building up Emerl. But I gotta say, it is indeed too damn stingy with the upgrade points, and getting duplicate cards can fuck right off. There's a lot of room for improvement, but there's also a lot of promise.
All the throwbacks are such a joy, really hits you in gut remembering how long ago these were

Yeah Sonic Battle is pretty good overall honestly. Although Johnny's complaint about the story mode is pretty fair.
It is true that it's extremely padded. My initial run of completing the game fully has 40hrs on it which is insane for a GBA game.

Seeing Johnny marathon through a bunch of games in one vid (ironically during a marathon) like this, the Sonic Racing games, and the Street Fighter video are very interesting to see him do. Kinda reminds me of Scott the Woz and Caddy's new format of torturing himself for an hour lol
I think he should do it more often, as much as I enjoy the normal marathon formate, it lead to series fatigue and endings up making him missing a lot of recent releases due to him having prior commitments to a series. It's honestly part of why I think his channel grow slower than it should for the level of quality.
Wonder if Johnny would be able to squeeze some new reviews of the No More Heroes games at some point of the year now that the 3rd mainline game is out
18:23, I have a few corrections for Sonic the Fighters.
1. It actually did receive a US release in July of 1996 for the arcade. My Source is Sonic Jam for the Saturn.
2. Honey is not actually not in the original release at all, she was found in the code years later and was finished up for the HD remasters.
3. The game was called Sonic Championship in the US and was renamed to Sonic the Fighters internationally for the remasters to match the Japanese title.
If anyone's looking for more information may I recommend the Cutting Room Floor Wiki and of course Sonic Retro.
Anyways just wanted to share that info. Sonic the Fighters has information mixed up all the time, so no biggy. Thanks for the awesome video!
