Miep Giess did a lot more than find the diary on the floor, she cared for the family for 2 years while they were in hiding. sacrificing every comfort she had to them, and risked her life everyday. she is my personal hero

I still remember being so excited to see that tiny, courageous woman going up on stage (! 'Is it her?!, Is it Miep?!). She spoke English reasonably well, but preferred to speak either in Dutch or Grerman. I am very happy she got a well-deserved standing ovation.
This brings tears to my eyes. It’s people like Miep Gies that the world needs more of.

I really don't know what people can have against Anne Frank or the diary that she wrote. She went through hell and suffered tremendously during her short life and she, her family and the helpers deserves all the respect in the world. Regarding the speech, I'm not sure if Miep wished to speak but I'm happy the documentary won and that Miep attended The Oscars.

Maybe it is time, nearly 20 years after the event, for me to set the record straight. Yes, I did stop Miep from speaking because I had been warned that our maximum time at the microphone before the band played us off was about 45 seconds. Miep knew this in advance of coming and agreed that I should do the talking but seemed suddenly as if she now wanted to say something. On the spur of the moment I did in fact say "you don't need to talk" but I was instinctively determined not to see her embarrassed by being drowned by the band mid sentence which I thought would be humiliating and quite appalling. Did I do the right thing....who know, but certainly she seemed to show no resentment to me afterwards. And as one of the commentators here says, I not only paid tribute to her for heroism but the entire audience rose to their feet to applaud her. And as for Mr Teakesn's comment below, perhaps he would benefit from actually watching my film before being so free with his criticism. He might then recognise that his comments are not only offensive but also inaccurate and ill founded given the message of the film.
Mr Blair, you made the absolutely correct decision. Ms Gies presence at the podium spoke volumes. Words were not necessary. The warm, respectful reception she received did not require a response. So much was conveyed without speech. Bravo and congratulations on your triumph at The Academy Awards and my thanks for your wonderful documentary.

We understand the time constraints Jon Blair . Naysayers need not reply . Yes it would've appalling and embarrassing for the band to cut her off mid- sentence and that's exactly what would've happened. There is only so much time allowed for speeches . The fact that she's there standing with you says everything .
This part really got to me. She was a true hero.

Miep Gies earned the respect and admiration of millions...but at a terrible, terrible price. She herself admitted that not a day go by that she do not think of Anne and the others from the Annexe.
I read her book, “Anne Frank Remembered.”
I don’t remember if she mentions when it started (maybe after she retired in the 1950’s), but she said every year, on August 4, she and jan would “act as though the day were not happening.”
She said she looks out a window all day, and he sits in a chair, with his back to the world, on purpose (probably because he and Bep were the only helpers who saw those in hiding being loaded on a truck).
She continued by saying then when they “felt the day was over,” they went back to a normal routine.

It was not a simple action. I"m from the Netherlands, and I know that this woman risked her life helping Anne Frank and the others who lived with her in those tiny, silent rooms filled with fear during those war year. She risked her life doing this. Had she been betrayed she would have been killed or been transported to a concentration camp. This woman didn't do just something simple. For years she gave food, books, newspapers, some comfort and love to these people. There was nothing simple about what she did.

When I say simple, I mean the act of hiding them in the attic. It wasn't a grandiose scheme & it give buy them a lot of time. I'm well aware of the danger & what would happen if they got caught. It's just sad things ended the way they did.
Jon Blair you are to be lauded for making the film . I watched with tears in my eyes that night seeing Miep Gies honored with you . Bless her heart for her heroism along with so many others who risked everything . Thank you for having her there with you . She is someone I would've loved to have met in person

This woman is a hero. She helped Anne Frank and the people who lived with her in those tiny, silent rooms during the war, all alone, and she risked her life giving them food, books, some comfort and love. And when they were betrayed and transported she found Anne's diary and gave a face to the horror. What she did and what risked she is beyond heroic.I'm Dutch and in the Netherlands the name Miep Gies will never be forgotten.

well, I think she would have been happy to have lived byeond 16 more then seeing Brad Pitt.
Anyone who's ever watched the Academy Awards and said that "minor" categories such as this one shouldn't be included in the telecast (or included in the awards at all) should watch this clip. May she and Anne both rest in peace.
Her English is actually pretty good. With all she did in her life I think she could have spoken volumes in that 30 seconds. Just my opinion.
Miep did much more than just save the diary. Her sacrifices and bravery deserves applause.

I wish she'd been given a chance to say something. If the orchestra had started to play her off - there would have been a riot. This is a woman that has been a hero to me since I was 9 years old. God bless her - her courage and humanity are extraordinary. I'm still in awe.

She should have been able to speak - it seems he says to her "you don't need to speak" and should've been presenter not only as the founder of the diary but mainly as one of the helpers during those dark days of nazi occupation. That's for her help and support - also putting her life at unimaginable risk - that she is praised and remember. A truly Righteous Among the Nations. RIP Miep.
I think he just didn't want to put her under pressure to speak, as her English wasn't that good. But she was a truly inspirational women and a real heroine, and she deserved every accolade and recognition that she received.

Just finished reading the book written by Miep Gies about the events of Anne Frank. She did SO much to help people during the atrocities of WW2. A true unsung hero.
She spoke well enough in the Documentary and it's it not like they subtitled her. They could have quite easily.

She also wrote how sh wanted go go on living even after she had died which also came true through her diary. The comment above didnt mean anything bad it was one of her dreams and interests she thought about.
The only reason I didn't like it was because it appeared Miep Gies wasn't allowed to speak. The man accepting tells her .."you don't have to" but it certainly looked like she was willing and able to say something. A shame with such a vast audience, probably the only one with anything really important to say, didn't even get a chance to say what her thought were.
Anne Frank Remembered is a great documentary feature.
Poor Anne....she deserves this award!
She was 16 years old when she died during the death march. She, like all of the other victims of the second world war (as in all the other wars) deserved a lot more then just an award.

@Javier636 I believe that Miep was extremely uncomfortable speaking in English. Also I believe that she was always uncomfortable with her celebrity. It was kind of Mr. Blair to include her in his acceptance of the Oscar.

The Diary has been conclusively proven to NOT be a hoax. To say it is a hoax is like saying the dinosaurs didn't exist. Narrow-minded pendejo.

In my opinion they should have let her speak it looks like she wanted to so ignorant of him to not let her what was the point having her there what a shame for her he received the award and got to speak but she did the work of starting this whole story off without her this award wouldn’t of happened

Miep Gies didn't only found the diary. She risked her life for three years every day to collect food for all the people that where hiding in the house. it,s very strange and a shame that the man next to Miep does not mention this.

@646guy I agree - maybe she might have taught those people something. But then that meant they'd actually have to listen and not just hear what they WANT to hear. God bless Miep and her husband and all those true Christians who tried and sometimes succeeded in helping our Jewish bretheren. They are true heroes.

1.-) Miss Miep tried to approach the microphone as if wanting to say something.
2.-) Mr. Blair was quick in letting her know she didn't have to say anything. My presumption is because there are people signaling them to wrap it up. I still think it was unpolite not to have let her say a couple words. The world need to hear from these heroes, it would have been so refreshing to hear Miss Miep say something.

I do not think that Mr. Blair was to blame. Why don't we both attempt to write to Mr. Blair and ask him? I am sure that there is a good reason why he told her that she didn't" have to say anything". In the documentary, it is clear that she struggles with English. Maybe that is why he did what he did.

I think you're thinking of "One Survivor Remembers" about Gerda Weissmann Klein and which won for Best Documentary Short Subject that same evening. The filmmaker Kary Antholis gave her the podium after she won. She did get to speak, went over the time limit, wasn't cut off, and pretty much brought the audience to tears. This Jon Blair idiot should've done the same for Miep. Bastard.

Maybe next time a documentary about the Holocaust would win again. And it would be better if the documentary was in German, Polish, Hungarian, Hebrew, Dutch, Italian, or even in French. That would be the first non English language documentary to win Best Documentary Feature and the second Documentary about the Holocaust to win Best Documentary Feature
