Navigating between two cultures, I have grown up in Australia but have been deeply influenced by my Korean heritage. This dual identity has shaped who I am, creating a unique blend of both cultures. My artwork explores this intersection, using symbolic imagery to express the complexities of my personal identity.
In the painting, two cows represent the worlds I belong to-one from the open pastures of Australia and the other from traditional Korean farms. These animals overlap, illustrating the shared space of my dual heritage. The vibrant rainbow background signifies positive experiences from living between two worlds, with colors representing the richness and diversity of my life.
However, merging these identities is challenging. The blurred lines between the cows highlight the difficulties I’ve faced, symbolizing the unclear nature of navigating a dual cultural identity. Through this piece, I confront and embrace these challenges, using art to explore and express the fluidity of my identity.
In the second drawing, a large intestine sprawls over a lush, green landscape, tying together two essential elements: identity and nature. The intestine represents our connection to human nature, while the green landscape signifies the natural world. Just as our bodies cannot function without intestines, my sense of self cannot exist without my intertwined Australian and Korean identities. Nature and identity are both integral to my existence-one physical, grounding me to the earth, and the other metaphorical, shaping my perception and place in the world.
This exhibition opens a dialogue about the complexities of cultural identity in a globalized world. Through visual metaphor and personal narrative, the artwork invites viewers to reflect on how personal experiences and cultural backgrounds intersect to form unique individual identities, contributing to a richer, more inclusive understanding of identity.
