    E46 M3 is the absolute best body style of this car hands down. I worked at a BMW service center when I was about 23 and there was always something special when one of those rolled through the shop. The Laguna Seca Blue color was always my favorite. BMW didn't step up to rectify the subframe issue with these cars. If they did they would've issued an international recall for every single E46 model (especially the M3) to strengthen the mounting points. Instead they replaced the boot floors with the same exact failure prone component as the original on a very small number of customers cars who complained. There are still E46 floors cracking to this day and owners who are fixing this design flaw on their own dime and time.

    • @paulvicks1336
      @paulvicks1336 Před 4 lety +2

      Yes they did step up. My '04 M3 definitely doesn't have this issue. In fact from '04 to end date dont. Also, what you call "design flaw" is part of why the e46 has one of the best chassis in automobile history

    • @shoman24v
      @shoman24v Před 4 lety

      @@paulvicks1336 They made around 4 million E46's. Most the subframe issues are on the early 99/00 models. I believe BMW made some changes on the 01 and and on cars, but it has been known to happen to on those too. I would just assume later cars are less likely to get it, but not exempt. No matter what, it is a gamble.

    • @FishingNativeWaters
      @FishingNativeWaters Před 4 lety +4

      Hey Sawyer, I completely agree. (This is my fishing channel btw) I’ve been under several e46’s and they all have cracks! Every single one. M3’s, 325’s, zhp’s. Unfortunately we were all left with the burden of coming up with a “proper” fix and not just putting a bandaid on the pre existing problem that will ultimately fail again.

    • @scaley312
      @scaley312 Před 4 lety +6

      @@paulvicks1336 the additional few spots welds they added for '04-'06 still didn't solve the problem. There are multiples documentations of those years having cracks just as bad or even worse than the '01-'03 models. It all comes down to how the car was treated throughout it's life. But the statement that BMW fixed this issue is just plain incorrect.

    • @yoni1902
      @yoni1902 Před 4 lety +2

      @@paulvicks1336 Sadly your car does have the issue. they all do. the extra spot welds did not solve it, or BMW's structural foam injection - cars cracked with the foam and wit the welds. its just not sustainable to mount a diff on 3 sheets of metal. if an e46 is sold without plates + a top beam/bar like VinceBar done, you can consider it as a car with a vulnerable boot floor that will 100% break if you drive it like you should.
      I have yet seen a high mileage M3 without cracks in the subframe - I suggest watch some redish e46 boot floor restoration videos.
      And i personally own one which i had done both reinforcement plates and a Vince bar on.
      what BMW did is to either inject foam into your car, or if big cracks are found replace the boot floor - the foam solution did not prevent cracking, and the new boot floor, eventually cracked again.
      Same with the Vanos - they fail over time, even with the updated bolts, the Vanos hubs crack because there is free play between the teeth and the hub.

    Excellent video, I own a 06 Interlagos. Q - in the video I think you make a reference to BMW addressing the subframe issue later in the production run. This was never officially confirmed and remains a contentious point. What is your understanding of what BMW did? TIA.

    • @lordgibbness
      @lordgibbness Před 4 lety +1

      They didn't. They used a few more spot welds in later production runs, but they still crack and fail. The best way to resolve is with an internal brace and gussets within the boot floor. Checkout Vince braces for examples of how to fix. You will also need to plate the bottom too.

    I love watching people enjoy the E46 M3. It's so special IMHO. However at 2:25 he says that BMW stepped up and addressed the Subframe issue. I wish. No BMW did NOT step up and deal with this problem which is still a big problem for anyone with an E46 of any model. Even the 316i or the 318i have this problem. Which is probably why BMW kept just throwing a few bones to those that tried to sue them over this. Instead of actually doing a full recall and fixing it right. They did very little to help those with this problem and even if it was under warranty when it was detected they would just do one of two lame fixes to the one car. They would pump Epoxy down the drivers or left side of the subframe bolt area or actually replace the rear section floor pan. But it was the very same parts that failed so badly in the beginning. So no they didn't do anything to address the problem as they should have. No recall and not real solution. I paid $3200.00 to get re-enforcement plates welded into my car as well as putting in the epoxy. All at my own expense. I love driving the car now but it should never have had such a serious problem in the first place.
