I am a reasonably accomplished pianist, but took up the viola 8 years ago (with no previous string experience) as a retirement project. My in-person lessons for 4 years were really waste of time and money as my teacher - perhaps rather typically here in the UK - was fixated with getting me through the ABRSM grades, when what I most wanted was to explore the instrument and create the best possible sound. During the pandemic I turned to youtube. You and one other are now my daily "go to" tutorials. I have learned so much and made 10 times more progress than with those paid lessons, to the point I now lead the viola section in one community orchestra (which includes a number of folk who have played all their lives) and appear sufficiently capable to make up the numbers are other orchestras' concerts. I particularly enjoy the analogies you make with other skills and pastimes. Thank you!
Filip, I am a 64 year old retired violist, teacher, composer, cathedral choirmaster, organist. I still practice 2 hours daily. One thing I discovered, was to warm up first on double stops, extremely slowly, softly and extremely evenly - like using a wet finger on a fine crystal glass. This practice allows me to have an almost perfect tonal quality for everything else. In a way, much like the sound of a fine clarinetist. Then I later add everything else. I studied with many many great musicians and conductors; my first teacher in conducting was the god-son of Brahms and friend of R. Strauss for example.
Wow. Quite an inspiration. Thank you
I can see double stop practice being helpful.
you are amazing
Nice résumé, Mr Bear... and aside from the twenty year difference sounds very familiar!
Thank you for sharing your treasurable experience on improving and keeping the sound our string instruments good. I am practicing slow bowing at BPM=30 which is limited by my metronum app, and I realy appriciate the profit of slow bowing practicing. Your experience strengthened and encouraged me, and I will try to reach the goal you mentioned. Thanks again, Mr.Bear.
I was an beginner and took lessons for 10 years from the age of 40. After 10 years I plateaued and quit. Violin became a "job" and I didnt feel like practicing anymore. Quite frankly, we arent all born with the same gray matter and gifts. I enjoyed playing in a beginner orchestra that my teacher set up. I tried to join a local orchestra and failed to catch on. I still dont understand how violinists like yourself can remember the music for these long pieces w/o referring to the music.
On me reprochait justement de jouer trop près du chevalet , cette leçon me soulage et me rassure, dorénavant j'en ferai à ma tête en suivant attentivement vos conseils
Le son obtenu est magnifique !
This is definitely a game changer! How come no one told me this before 🤣 thank you!!
Right?! It amazes me every single time when I have a new student and they've never heard of it. It's SUCH an easy fix! They sound like a different player IMMEDIATELY! (in a good way 😂)
MR. POGAMI, YOU SOUND ABSOLUTELY AWSO.E
ME! VERY IMPRESSED. THANK YOU.
This was pretty helpful! I had been having some trouble with my G string and I think I'd really gotten scared away from the bridge to try to hide it playing softer, which exacerbated the problem. Attacking the note nearer the bridge seems to be a good first step to fixing it!
Yes, the closer you play to the bridge, the more pressure you will need to make it sound. Consistent bow speed and bow pressure are key.
Wow! Great advice. I was practicing the Schumann Phantasiestucke and they sounded wishy washy. Well, everything I played lacked definition. Playing nearer at the bridge immediately gave more sound a also a lot more confidence. Thank you!
Yes, thank you for that one. Waiting for the next one!
These videos are simply amazing ! even for beginners like me, to have some very definite and helpful advice , clearly explained with humour and above all by a truly great musician , thank you so much for all these generous and helpful videos , some of the best if not the best I've seen so far .
Wow, Filip. Yep, not been sounding great even when in tune... Suggested to my tutor that he wear headphones at my last lesson. "Then I won't be able to hear you" he said. "Exactly" said I and we laughed. WILL try this tomorrow... Tuning up at midnight won't go down too well with the neighbours! Your vids are top class btw.
Wow I feel like I can see the violin in a whole different way after watching this video
Luv this guy!! Talent and I’m learning a lot help me better violinist
great video! I am so glad to hear you talking about having a personality with your own sound. the uniqeness of it. otherwise what's the point.:) I see so many violinists playing "on the surface" of their violins not looking for violin's possibility and their own as players as well. it's so important! Thank You FIlip!!! :)
Yay!!! Glad to see like minded people on here 🤘🏼
@@filippogady I think you're amazing 👏
An amazing lesson! Thank you Filip!
youre a stud. love your perspective. great stuff
Also for a good sound play in a room or hall where there is no furniture no curtains to absorb sound waves. Acoustics of the hall is important to sense any intonation mistake.
BANK ACCOUNT! Lol Another great lesson! Keep it up!
Hehe thanks so much Joseph!!! More coming!!! 🙌🏼
Many thanks. Also in the notebook.
Hi Filip, thanks so much for these videos which are really helpful..
Could you please make a video explaining about sound under ear vs sound to audience.. Thanks..
(Great playing by the way)
Thank you.
@6:40 - LOL! Is that Tom Hanks in the water? "I'm Sorry" Ha, ha, ha ,ha. Too funny!
Very good!
Hey I’m teaching my self and I upload videos, this was so much help. Thank you
My violin teacher told me that I didn't play in the string. So he made me play consistent bow strokes with a lot of pressure to be well in the string but sometimes it creaked, he hadn't explained to me that the more pressure I needed, the more I had to play close to the bridge ! Thanks u sir
You’re most welcome! It’s all really about 3 things: your bow speed, bow pressure and bow placement. You change one of these parameters, you have to adjust the other two
@@filippogadyoh your quick response surprised me! I understand better now, thank you again
Please, can You give advise or explaine, how to play with wolf tones on violin(G string)
You are great, funny and different
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
hi i am from Bali,.. can you put any short partiture for practucing speed. Thank you
Brilliantly demonstrated. You are an incredible player. Thank you. My wife says you are very attractive btw.
I must try near the bridge and that rotary bowing....
Karena begitu penting menghasilkan bunyi merdu dan menyenangkan maka berlatihlah dan berlatih dan ikuti saran dari beliau ini.❤U.🙏🤩
I feel like I have stumbled onto the best secret ever!!!!
Hehe, that's how I felt when my teacher told me when I was 13.
So glued #lepidlo
Wow! Tak to ano!
Egy újkészítésű hegedűt milyen módszerekkel játszunk be? Mit ajánlász, esetleg kromatikus skálák?../
How to prepare a "newmade" violin to be played? What methodes could help? Chromatic scales?
Will you teach me Sir?
What passage is this beautiful melody from? I can’t find it anywhere! It’s very melancholy
Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto :)
What's the piece title starting at 2:28 please ?
I guess the closer to the bridge for high quality violin because if you have very cheap violin it become more terrible
Do you think this could be applied to viola... incidentally we had the same Prof G. Zhislin....Great
Absolutely, I think the viola can take even more pressure, because of the thickness of the strings. And wow, that a coincidence 😂😂😂😂😂
When did you study with him? I was there 2005 until 2007
@@filippogady Hi . Thankyou for your reply. I studied with Grisha in the early 90s for 3 years. I still do his exercises for both right hand and left hand....and to me they make sense. I have great memories about him..how he would work on sound...explaining about the depth of sound.. plus I have his 24 Paganini caprices... stunning..so clean..he not only was a great violinist but also a great viola player... keep up the great work... I love your playing..so fresh and sincere with energy.. thankyou
6:36 😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂
🤣
I tried this but my violin just sounds super scratchy near the bridge…. Is it that I need to persevere and get some rosin on the strings or something? Or is my violin too cheap lol.
You have to find the right balance of bow pressure and bow speed. It requires some experimenting. Good luck :)
What's the name of the song played in the end?
The piece at the end is the opening to the Sibelius violin concerto
I love sticking out
Nobody ever doubted that! Warzone soon!!!!!
How come many teachers ask you to bow straight and play in middle betwen bridge and finger board?
I think they will say that to a beginner mostly, when NOT playing on the fingerboard is still considered an amazing feat. What I'm talking about are techniques that are a little more advanced.
@@filippogady thanks for that yes I am beginner about a year ago I start learning, I will definitely give it a try bow where bridge is and check out the sound quality 😀
9:16 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂 Ray Chen learn from this
Lol!!!
I like your chin rest, Filip!
Love your playing - but continuous vibrato?? Ooh, many notes with none, my friend? On and off, not more and less…
sul tasto anyone? lmao
