Happy B-day! To give a gift on your birthday says a lot about you. I definitely needed this. I can't draw very well so this is really going to help me going forward. Thanks so much!
Hey Charles, first of all thank you for this amazing update on Storyboarder! I've had Storyboarder lingering on my laptop for a while now, but with Shotgenerator, I finally started drawing out my storyboard. I am working on a film project in Tokyo, and am using storyboards as a means of communication for Japanese actors. I've been working with shot generator for two days now and I hope you would find my experience with it helpful. A super duper big plus was that I actually discovered new shots because of the software! Thanks to being able to virtually set up a shot and moving around it it, I bumped into angles that I liked much better than the ones I had in mind. This is soooo great. Saves tons of time on having to deal with that on set later on, I think. And that's where the potential is for me really: drafting a virtual space of your shots. This means in my personal experience I would love to be able to save sets in shot generator. For some reason I can't right now. Might be a beta issue, might not yet be available, not sure. I mean in movies particular locations occur more than once during the duration of the story, so in shot generator, it would be great if you could save these locations so you can revisit them and start generating (discovering!) new shots in them . I also started to set up BIG. Placing object all the way in the back to indicate depth, or to mark that this particular shot should look vast. Also because I basically started to do minecraft for films a bit... So the more ground I can cover, the better. In the map I seem to be able to go wild with space, when using the bars on the left screen however, the Y bar seems to max out at -30. Another technical issue I had is that I am not able to save my custom poses, even when I follow the steps you show in your video. I run shot generator on windows 10. Further more I find the usages of the phone super fancy, but also pretty hard to do. Again maybe a tech thing, because when I move my phone to the left, the character moves to the right, all the movements are in the opposite direction somehow. Anyway, really great job! I will draft out my entire film with this for sure. I will make sure to post some stuff on your platforms! Thanks!
I can't wait to try this out with the kids in my high school Audio Video class. Teaching storyboards isn't always the most fun topic, especially for the kids who can't draw well, but it has so much potential to be engaging when you can add incredible tools like this one. I'm super impressed!
Blender user here. Stumbled across your software in a really convenient time! Im actually fixing up my character workflow and was looking for story board software. Thanks for making this free!
Playing with the new Shot Generator, and OMG I'M IN LOVE WITH IT. Using my phone's gyro to manipulate a rig feels like the FUTURE. I wish something like that would exist for Maya and Blender, I don't think I'd ever want to go back to a mouse. I can get really nice poses in seconds. Using a 3D input for 3D manipulation just makes so much sense. Great job on this!
This is really cool Charles, you guys are to be congratulated, BIG TIME. I am working with my daughter on a Domestic Violence Project and within the space of 30 minutes i was able to render a small 10 second movie just by using your instructions
This is Huge! I can now put a little more detail in my storyboard and catch potential composition issues before I start creating the actual animations. Thx
Happy Birthday Charles..... This is going to not only revolutionize storyboarding, but this is going to save people from bad movies with better planned out shots!
The new features were looking good to begin with, but then that phone rotation feature came up and my jaw dropped. That is some serious innovation right there. Kudos!
A belated Happy Birthday and thank you for this amazing tool! Looking forward to future versions because this is about to become the very best tool on the market (if it isn't already).
This is an amazing feature for the storyboarder. I have waited for the program that has this feature for many years. It is an unbelievable feature for the people that are not successful about drawing like me. I can't wait to use this feature. Meanwhile, I would love to suggest that you add more guides options like Diagonal, Triangles, Golden Ratio etc. I think that those will very help us while to draw a shot. by the way Happy birthday Charles!
you can use easycanvas too, its more cheap than astro pad, and has an option of free trial of 14 days. but its needs an usb conection, i have been trying and until now i got no problems
Hi Charles, this version looks AWESOME!! I'm okay at drawing but the shot gen will def make a SB look more prof looking. Can't wait to give this a spin after not using since I completed my Bachelor degree in May '19. THANK YOU :))
@@CharlesFormanWonderUnit I tried it out. AMAZING!!! Is there a way to input your f-stop? If so, will it simulate depth of field? Even if those things aren't available, this is still, by far, the best storyboarding software I have ever used.
Happy Birthday Man! Amazing job thank you! Maybe in the feature have possibilities to have camera in the basic timeline to make animation or animatic and rendering!
Great work on the beta. I think it looks pretty good but I do think what could be nice is something similar to a frames timeline so that in case you need do 2 shots and only a couple things change between them you could just push the button to enhance your work flow
I've been working with the Shot Generator for several hours now. I've made a handful of body positions for a short film I'm working on (it would be nice to share them to a larger database that more people could import). Firstly, I love Storyboarder and the Shot Generator tool and here are a few things I can recommend to improve it. I would love to have a way to import hands/arms because the manipulation of hands is a little rough. I know this program is meant for more generalized positions, but as I become more familiar with it, I want to make micro adjustments to almost animate the scene. Another thing I would from the program would be the ability to slide the camera along a track/trajectory over a specified time period. The camera feels like it should be able to do that already with the free "WASD" movement. Perhaps when you try to import moving camera shots as a board, Storyboarder could display it with a 3D movement arrow or convert the motion into multiple slides (in quick succession). Lastly, I would like a simple way to project text or just initials onto a character's chest as to easily label them in a crowded room. I'm sure there's a more complex way of importing characters, but having a simple labeling or color-coding of shirts/pants would allow for customization that makes the storyboards a little more accessible to a bigger audience. I might be dumb and some of these things exist already, but either way I would like to be able to do them. Keep up the good work. Storyboarder is amazing!
hey really loving this beta so far,I just started using story boarder last month,I really like this shot generator feature, maybe it would be possible to add comic panels with speech bubble features for comic artist like myself and the ability import obj's if the app can support that.
Amazing, since 2018 in my personal projects I'm using this software and is glorious. Now, with the "Shot Generator" and importing my models it's DA BEST!!!! By the way, I try the Characterizer software, but crash in WIndows 10... a JavaScript error
This is looking really great. I do a lot of animation in Blender and appreciate the value of good storyboarding before jumping into detailed rigging and rendering. I see that you've been making objects in Blender and then importing them to Storyboarder. What format are you exporting? Do you have any hints about scaling to use? Keep up the SUPERB work!

Really amazing program. As I also cannot draw I think that this Shot Generator is a top feature. Unfortunately I just installed the latest version and cannot have the freedom to create sceneries and move every bone of characters like before. Now you only get those predefined sets which frankly are too limited. I hope that the ability to move cameras position objects and characters that was before can return soon.
Hello, great job. one question - if i modeling in blender - how i can export to Storyboarder format? From Blender export addon or first to obj and next different program like Paint 3D?
Wow - this looks great! Have you considered being able to export the camera settings (position, rotation, focal length, etc.) so 3D programs could import and start working on the same scene with the exact same perspective?
They need to update the pose list and make it more different because it could be confusing to have a long list of poses like maybe this should put them in groups or in tabs so that you can easily find them for example you can have a tab for all types of sitting poses or another time for fighting another time for walking or action poses etc
Hello Charles. I recently downloaded the storyboarder, but this 3d models editing feature is not enabled. @@CharlesFormanWonderUnit It seems to do well for what i need. I am currently experimenting with combining storyboarder with the usage of (subclips) from videos obtained in premiere pro. This will allow me to focus on what poses and camera shots will be the most impactful!
Hey guys, great work, great software for both story boarding and possibly animation. But here's a suggestion I have. In the posing of characters because of the difficulties in panning, zooming in and out, especially on the limbs, hands and fingers, why not make in such a way when I select the palms a new window, or small page will popup that is a more bigger and detailed version for posing and adjusting body parts. And lastly, after successfully story boarding with story boarder what other free software would you suggest for creating a more detailed environment for the complete animation? Hope my explanation is clear. God bless and cheers.
Feature suggestion. A name tag (Sprite) that hovers above the character. Also add to the objects some 'ARROWS'. How about some hair styles for them as well. Basic stuff like beard, moustache, long hair short hair. Glasses etc.
Hi, very nice feature! I am playing with it and I have a question. I am wondering if there is a way to actually display 3d drawing guides in the shot I generate. Let's say if I want to place some characters in 3D, but I want to draw the background by hand?
Just about to download, but it looks amazing. My question is, for the camera and lens setup, is it assuming a full-frame camera, or S35, etc.? Or does it give the actual field-of-view, which would be helpful. Thanks!
After opening up the program, it looks like on a 50mm lens, your F.O.V is around 22 degrees. That would mean you're assuming a roughly x1.9 crop factor like an M4/3 sensor. Is there a way to define the camera/lens properties so I don't have to calculate my F.O.V. for each setup?
this is really handy! One thing I that I was confused about while trying it was, well, when I tried to rotate/move the bones on my phone, I couldn't really figure out how to move them easily. They move very menial amounts at a time, and sometimes they twist when I want to be moving them. You seemed to have no issue with this in the video, so, is there a specific way of moving them that I am missing?
Yeah - it requires some getting used to. Basically, you have to hold your finger down on the big button while you rotate the phone, and then let up when you stop. I need to make a whole video on posing by itself.
Is there a specific way to make objects in Blender? Do they have to be pre-shaded or is that something storyboarder auto does with it's built in lighting? Do you have a tutorial that demonstrates this?
Feedback: Loving the featureset. Also feels like it's directly on the border between good feature set and almost too much. What I like about using software, at least partly, is that I assume a trained user of this software can create a certain amount of complexity (like multiple people) and let the computer take care of all the details that make it easier on the eye for the viewer but are not really necessary work for the creation of a scene itself.
I have storyboarder 1. 9Version but in this version i am not getting camera property, object property, and character property in shot generator. Please help me out, where to get these property.??
