  • Corrimony Chambered Cairn & Standing Stones are beautifully preserved and located just over 8 miles west of Drumnadrochit in the Scottish Highlands. The cairn contained a Bronze Age burial and is very atmospheric. It's completely free to visit and open all year round.
Corrimony Chambered Cairn very much reminded me of the more famous 'Clava Cairns' near Inverness and they're very similar. The circular burial mound is made up of pebbles & boulders and is surrounded by 11 standing stones (not all original). The cairn was capped with a large slab (which you can see at the end of the video) and it's likely that the south-west facing passage was aligned for a celestial event of some kind.
In 1952, archaeologists found stains in the sand in the burial chamber, which contained phosphorus - thought to have been leaching from the bones of a woman as she decomposed (you can see the remarkable stain on the information board shown in the video). They also found evidence of rituals and what is thought to have been an offering of meat. A bone pin was also found, which is now in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.
If you're in the area of Drumnadrochit, it's well worth a visit, especially if you're a fan of Clava Cairns. There's a small car park close by. Please be careful to look after the monument as it's very precious.
I'll be back soon with a city guide to the lovely city of Dunfermline and some more from lovely Glen Affric. All the best :-)

Hi everyone, hope you’re having a good week. The Corrimony Chambered Cairn is a little gem and very atmospheric. If you've been to Clava Cairns on the outskirts of Inverness, you'll see they're very similar. Really hope you enjoy the video. Thanks as always to everyone who watches - I really do appreciate it. All the best, David 🙂

Hi Kara, thanks so much - hope you're both doing well. Really glad you liked this one. I visited while I was filming in Glen Affric and I'm really glad I did. It had a real atmosphere and the story of the 4000 year old shadow was just amazing! Hope you have a lovely weekend and I hope to be back with a city guide to Dunfermline soon. All the best, David :-)

Hi Annie, thanks so much for watching. The 4,000 year old shadow is quite incredible isn’t it. When I crawled through to the chamber there was definitely a feeling and an atmosphere. We’re so lucky these incredible places are still here. Have a lovely week, all the best, David 🙂
