If you love hutspot and such, I have a recipe for you: Hete Bliksem (family recipe) 1 kg aardappels (there are many kinds, note the ones that are specifically for mashing, but you can have sturdier ones if you prefer as well) 1 kg appels (they have to be soft, the hard green ones to eat as snack are not that good for this, but still can be used, though. The best are the zure zachte species. You can also have sweet ones, or harder kinds, whichever you prefer) Schil de aardappels, snij ze in kwarten, en zet ze onder water op het vuur met een snufje zout. Schil de appels, snij ze in kwarten (of schijfjes), en haal de pitten eruit, leg ze op de aardappels. Ze hoeven niet onder water te staan: de stoom zal ze al koken. Laat het water aan de kook komen, en zet het vuur dan zacht, totdat de aardappels gaar zijn (prik erin met een vork en voel of het al zacht is) 100 gr gehakt per persoon (liefst van de slager, de supermarkt heeft er veels teveel water ingespoten, die is heel moeilijk 'hard' te bakken) In een koekenpannetje gaar je het gehakt tot ze bijna zwart zijn. Ze moeten hard zijn, omdat ze contrast moeten leveren met de zachte puree. Zodra de aardappels gaar zijn, giet je het water af met hulp van een deksel. Laat een koudwaterkraan meelopen: de stoom is ECHT heel heet. Prak de aardappels/appels. Niet geheel tot gladde puree: er moeten nog wel 'brokjes' herkenbare aardappel/appel te vinden zijn. Laat mensen zelf hun hete bliksem puree opscheppen, met gehakt (sommigen willen gehakt opzij, sommige erover, sommige erdoor) Ruim suiker+kaneel naar smaak toevoegen. De appels zijn heel 'nat', en nog tegen de 100 graden aan: het is niet voor niets HETE bliksem, dus pas op met de eerste happen. Daar is het koude drinkwater ook voor: voor als je slokdarm pijn doet van de hitte. Wij gebruiken altijd zure appels, omdat dat leuk contrastreerd met de zoete suiker. De suiker knarst, net als het harde gehakt, wat weer contrast geeft met de zachtere puree. Je kan echter ook (veel) minder suiker erop doen, en zoete(re) appels nemen. Maar dan mis je het zure-appels/zoete-suiker contrast. Kaneel is een must. Zonder kaneel is het geen hete bliksem. Het is super simpele kost: maar het zal je tijdens koude dagen doen opgloeien, en vullen met energie waar je urenlang de kou mee kan trotseren.

Plenty in common, Both countries fought against the Spanish to win independence. The Philippines is called after the Spanish emperor the Dutch fought against. Both people speak English well as second language. Filipinos are excellent seamen the Dutch had the same reputation. Kinilaw is the Filipino raw fish recipe they were surprised I actually liked it. Suspect they won't have much of a problem with the herring.

The Netherlands in its first century of independence had more in common with crime syndicates than a proper country. The Brothers De Witt murdered and subsequently skinned Johan van Oldenbarnevelt decapitated. These were the people who were the key of the Golden Age of the 17th Century. At present the Philippines is not perfect but in its first century of independence it is more humane than the Dutch were.

The Netherlands in its first century of independence had more in common with crime syndicates than a proper country. The Brothers De Witt murdered and subsequently skinned Johan van Oldenbarnevelt decapitated. These were the people who were the key of the Golden Age of the 17th Century. At present the Philippines is not perfect but in its first century of independence it is more humane than the Dutch were.
