    This is a Nagamaki, a Long handled sword that is a hybrid between a daito and a Naginata. It was a sword that could be used against mounted cavalry or foot soldiers, the extra long handle allowed the user to extend the reach of his sword by changing the position of his hands on the handle. All three of these blades were predecessors of the favored katana, which came later in History, the Daito being a longer version of the Katana, used mainly by Mounted Cavalry, which gave them longer reach so they had a more effective strike against foot soldiers.

  • @crozraven
    @crozraven Před 8 měsíci +6

    That full tang handle wraped with ito is brilliant. It's like a shorter version of "nagamaki" or practically a katana version of "parang sword." excellent craftsmanship overall.

    100% agree on most people's handles, way to fat, and not tapered to rear like real katanas. There is a lot of nuance to the Katana that most people overlook or dont understand. Very interesting take on a large Quaken/Katana hybrid 👍

      Thank you!

    • @mrkiky
      @mrkiky Před 5 měsíci

      The problem with making katanas is that the Japanese were hell bent on making everything as elaborate and hard for themselves, so no modern hobbyist really wants to spend 250h on a single build, nor do we really have the lifetime skill to do it properly. The wrap is really hard to do properly and it takes a really long time, has to be really tight, waxed, have little pieces of paper supporting the shape, the twists have to intertwine with each other in a certain way and they need to be hammered down into proper fit. Most hobbyists (including myself) just rush the wrap and it ends up fatter and more uneven than it should. Not even someone like Iliya Alexeyev doesn't get every part of the sword right, because back in the day, each part was done by a different guy, specializing only in that thing.

    That looks amazing! I haven't quite finished watching all the videos yet so i cant say for sure but i think yours is going to be what i vote for! A large part of that is because its pretty similar to what i made and that means it suits my taste pretty well. I really like the ever so slightly curved blade and the long handle. It just feels like you could get so much power out of it and have some brutal swings then choke up and have tons of control. Idk i just like the options lol.

    This is a great sword and I'd love to own one like it. The balance point being at the choil and the double handle and short blade combination is something I have been thinking about myself for a long time. The short blade and double handle allow for two handed maneuvering inside where I think most people would have to respond in a real attack and so indoor fighting and a tool that fits that is a very important. Maybe mate it with a Chissai made from the biggest file you can find so you can get maybe a 15-18' single hand to partner it (or just the leaf spring again), one to sweep and one to strike a perfect combination. They seem to be a quick manufacture so I think you could put in on the site maybe even with Micarta handles to bring the cost down to minimum and what a perfect real use partnership.

    • @SpeKterDesigns
      @SpeKterDesigns Před 8 měsíci

      Yeah I really like the idea of the pairing and you can just get that waterjet cut to size to minimise your work but also be enough to hang your hook on. I really like that sweep through the belly and the back of the blade too and the only Chissai I have seen made had the similar sweep. Im a big fan of the hammer tone you have done and the two tone color as well. Mint!

      What i love about young Erick's approach and thinking on design, is that he has no blocks of conformity tied to his ankles as it where and can remain simplistic and purestic in his approach, nothing runs the risk of being cluttered..⁉️
      Keep up the good work Erick, i believe there are many Designers that can take a cue from you, not withstanding the fact that i've seen some mouthwatering stuff come from the Bladeshops of others, there just simply been a hell of an advancement in capabilities and skills over the past decade by comparison to thirty/forty years ago in the craft of Bladesmithing..⁉️🤔
      a Certain most skilled
      most welcome revival thereof..⁉️

    Wow awesome weapon! im not a “katana guy”, i do mostly HEMA, but i have fought some ppl who did kenjuitsu (I probably spelled the wrong). N what found is the weapon were designed around what was available and personal preference n from the preference spawned the creation of the martial arts. In both medieval Europe and Medieval Japan the weapons were all unique. The blacksmith would measure, and ask question to the user b4 he began crafting the weapon. So that being said this weapon would 100% be found in medieval Japan. Well done, i really want to swing it.
