  • That one time Warren Zevon wanted to make a Cyberpunk album-before Billy Idol did.

    Way beyond "Werewolves of London", Warren Zevon one time tried to produce an album based after William Gibson, Thomas Pynchon, and even the geopolitics of the Cold War. It was a "2010 Sci-Fi Project". The strange menagerie of Rock, Folk, and technological concepts would eventually develop into the under-remarked "Transverse City (1989). It was Warren Zevon's tour of a Cold War world gone mad and introspection of his own psychology. The excitable boy that he was. In interviews, Zevon called the album a, "Checklist of humanities ills." So has Transverse City grown malignant since those Cyberpunk statements or has the world turned upside down?
    The album was intended to be "Dense" and was a studio project from top to bottom. On it, Zevon was able to enlist contributions from Jerry Garcia, David Gilmour, J. D. Souther, Neil Young, and even actor Michael Ironside contributed to the album's centerpiece "Run Straight Down". Songs like "The Long Arm of the Law" and "Gridlock" zoomed through the social chaos of Zevon's imagined future. "Turbulence" and "They Moved The Moon" examine longing on both sides of the Cold War, Afghanistan and nowhere. "Down In The Mall" and "Nobody's In Love This Year" are economic statements which might still hold weight in personal matters today. There's no Lawyers or Money here, but there is a sort of headless underground. Zevon's sight aimed far on the album and, as a musician's musician, he may have a uniquely Zevonian prediction for the outlandish world of 2010.
    So, beyond neon vistas and the data processing, won't you come on down to Transverse City?

    What a nice way to end the year. I will try to watch this in between fireworks going off, chamamés, cumbias, Los Palmeras, and drunk cousins. Thanks for everything, Pseudiom.

    I love this album so much, I’ve probably listened to the title track more than a thousand times. I randomly clicked on your channel and I didn’t expect to see a video about this album

    I really appreciate you doing this. Loved this flawed-but-somehow-brilliant album since it's release and when i listened to it down thru the years i've always felt it's one of the most underrated albums ever (NOT one of the best albums ever, but a very good album that is almost completely unknown). Opening medley is really fantastic but it's really the only part that seems to belong in even a loose concept album, i think. Maybe it should have been an EP?
    Part of the reason for its disappearance has to be the truly terrible cover, surely.

    I'd be curious to hear your take on other weird one-off out-of-genre albums from bands/artists with an established sound. The biggest examples I know best are Slang by Def Leppard (1996) and Under Wraps by Jethro Tull (1984). Really interesting to look into.

    • @Pseudiom
      @Pseudiom  Před rokem +3

      Sounds like an interesting concept. I'll definitely consider it, but Def Leppard is unlikely. Jethro Tull is very possible though. It just needs to have enough material outside me saying, "This sounds odd for them."

    love Zevon.
    imo "run straight down" was Z's response to marvin gaye's "mercy me (the ecology)"
    30:27 - 'all good stories end in death' is actually a hemingway quote - not to say Z didn't employ it just that it was a borrowed phrase.

    You missed that Neil Young released "Trans" already in 1983. Nobody seemed to like that much, either. But it's a fascinating listen in retrospect.

    I think it suffers from what a lot of his stuff after his first two albums did in that some of the hooks and rhythms are too repetitive, but sound wise it's great, blends his style with synth very well. The bleak tone and topics work well with his music, I think he's at his best doing storytelling songs from Veracruz to Run Straight Down. Overall not my favorite of his but much better than his previous 80s work, I'd probably put it 4th after his first two albums, his live one and Life'll Kill Ya. Didn't deserve to bomb so hard but I guess it's tough when all your potential singles are incredibly grim.

    I had never heard of this album before or even heard of this musician. It wasn't until I searched him up on Spotify that I realized he sang that godawful Werewolves of London song so I was very hesitant to check this album out. Little did I know how much I would actually enjoy this, especially the latter half, although I honestly didn't get any cyberpunk vibes upon listening. Maybe I've just grown too accustomed to the typical synth-heavy soundtracks that we expect from "cyberpunk" content.

    • @Pseudiom
      @Pseudiom  Před rokem +3

      I'm glad you looked deeper than "Wereweolves of London"! Zevon is a lot more that that. I'd say "Transverse City" (outside Bladerunner and Vangelis) predates before the Cyberpunk sound was established. The opening track has some chimes that are slightly Japanese influenced, but mostly it really doesn't match the modern Cyberpunk aesthetic. I consider it a sort of branch that was never developed on post-Zevon.
