Coder for 28 years. Assoc Degree with an RHIT. Nobody mentions the RHIT. I took 2 years of coding with 4 internships before I graduated.
I code ERs. Dx coding with infusions, injections and charging.
From what I'm seeing once they graduate, it is hard to find that first job. Everybody wants to work at home but most remote jobs want 3-5 years experience.
AHIMA is really getting expensive! Yearly membership is $149 then you have to pay for the recertification. Then you have to pay for most of the CEUs. Now, AHIMA is requiring 40% of CEUs to come directly from AHIMA. Their quizzes are $30 per quiz!! I must have 20 CEUs for the 2-year cycle.

I originally earned a CBCS certification that no employers were interested in once I actually started job searching, I also earned a CMAA certification through the same program. I am considering the idea of just letting my CBCS certification expire when it comes time to renew it in 2025, mostly due to the fact that I am interested in obtaining a CPC certification and keeping the CBCS when it isn't even helping me seems pointless. With that said, I am also not 100% sure anymore that coding is the right career path for me.
Yes, coding is interesting to me, and yes, my current job in medical data processing can get monotonous, but I also don't know if I am ready to commit myself to something in the way that coding would require me to, it is a life long commitment and while I know that my family would be disappointed in me for suddenly switching gears, I also know that as long as I am unsure and looking into getting new credentials, it may be better to consider other careers on the whole.
Can anyone with experience in the coding field provide me with any advice on this matter?

Entering the medical coding industry without a medical background can be challenging, but it's definitely achievable with the right training and dedication. It's a field that requires a good understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, coding guidelines, and healthcare regulations. Proper training is crucial, so consider a reputable program from organizations like Preppy, which offer comprehensive courses designed for beginners. The learning curve might be steep at first, but many have transitioned successfully into this field by staying focused and persistent in their studies. Good luck on your journey into medical coding!

So, I recently worked at an entry level Billing and Coding office. My boss pulled me aside and told me she thought I should become an Auditor. I only have the one year experience from that office and I mostly did billing. Do you think I should just take my ex bosses advise and go strait into a Certification for Auditing or do you think I should do a Billing & Coding Certification to get more of that experience first?

He is getting disappointed that can't do anything besides hard work and getting paid dimes. Is there anything that he can learn this and start to do something that is close to his major? For doing this billing or coding, what he can do? any help, any advice. Does he need any certificate for billing and coding?

Anyone have any other ideas for possible careers with good pay and not such intense schooling.?🤷‍♀️

I can answer that! Yes or CDI Specialist is also a good path for RNs. Clinical Documentation Integrity is like pre-coding for the coder and sorting out the inconsistencies/inaccuracies of the documentation.

Hi! I have been looking into medical coding certification through my local community college. I have worked in insurance sales for 7 years, but I am ready for a career change. I thought medical coding may be an option. I love routine and organization, and I am also able to complete task very quickly. It’s always scary to start over, but this seems like a good fit for me. Just wondering if you have any advice for the newcomer! Thank you :)

Sounds like a great plan! Just make sure that even if they encourage another certification that you ultimately get certified through the AAPC or AHIMA.
