“I know people that collect lots of editions of Pride and Prejudice or Alice In Wonderland” I am both of those people
I COLLECT THOSE SHAKESPEARES TOO I’VE BOUGHT ALL OF MINE ON EBAY!!!!!!
Naked hardbacks are my favveeeee
Mine are Alice in Wonderland and Jane Eyre 😅
I believe the Virginia Woolf vintage collection also has a copy of Flush, her 'biography' of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's dog 🥰 they also do a gorgeous Bronte collection!
Dang I’m going to need to get those Woolfs now aha
I love the idea of using cloth designs for books. My grandma was a designer for textiles and that is so underrated nowadays. :)
Persephone books puts textile designs that were authentic to the time of the book on the inside jacket of their books. They are awesome. :)
Penguin Modern Classics are one of my favorite collection. I love the covers, size and the spine (the white or the newer mint ones too). I also love the Penguin English Library collection. But one of the best I think is the Penguin Orange collection for their 70th anniversary. Those are perfect!
would love to see a general classics collection
I love the Penguin Vintage Classics. Those are my preferred method of collecting most actually. I have all my Sherlock Holmes novels in those old, ugly and really cheap Wordsworth Editions though, and I absolutely love them!
These editions drive me nuts! 😂 Part of me want to own all of the one authors books in one coordinated edition, and the whole collection of the different titles available. But also there are some titles of one author that I like better in that edition, and another in a different one. 🙄 And I don't want to start getting multiple copies of the same title... So many choices for just one book! 😂 But I also love them and love how creative it all is.
Omg yes! The struggle is real haha
Theyre not even available in my country lmao
I feel you
I've been trying to get cohesive editions for all the Jane Austen books but I can't find a single one where I like each individual design
I only two more of the vintage classics in Jane Austen Emma and prejudice but I some other ones but would like to all of them . Love the puffin books ones they so cool .but love vintage classics . Would like to see modern classics as well.
I love these beautiful editions of classic books. Right now I'm working on getting a full collection of Jane Austen books
I love seeing other people's classics collections, they're my favourite kind of videos to watch! p.s. I need to find someone who will look at me the same way Jean looks at her Puffin Sisterhood collection.
In your collection, I adore the Vintage Classics Jane Austen series. Just so beautiful, and from my perspective as an artist, I love how painterly and stylised they are.
I really love the Macmillan Collector’s Library editions and the Chiltern Classics. I’m a sucker for a gilded edge and both these editions come with gilded edges and they’re so gorgeous.
I have a complete Jane Austen set by Word Cloud Classics which is not the only set I own but the only one still in print. So beautiful! You make me want to go cruise for more lovely classics.
I would adore to see a whole collection of your classics!
Noted ;)
Likewise!!
I love the vintage red spine additions so have a shelf dedicated them, also love the Penguin English Library editions
They do look so good all lined up on the shelf!
Ahh! I just bought those Vintage Classic editions of Woolf's To The Lighthouse and Austen's Persuasion! Currently absorbing the former, I love Woolf and I'm so tempted to buy the rest of the collection despite owning them all already 👀
I’m also one of those people with different editions of P&P (Clothbound Classics and Folio Edition but I really want the edition you have... Vintage does some GREAT collections).
I have the penguin Black Cover Classics . All of my classics are in this cover. Got the odd English Library edition but can't afford to start a collection from the beginning. The black covers started by accident.
Beautiful collection! I love the Penguin English Library editions so much
Heidi was one of my favourite books as a child too. Beautiful books 😀
This video is honestly my book wish list in visual form 😂 I do have all the Puffin collection and love the Pride and Prejudice and A Little Princess cover illustrations the most. 💕
A Little Princess may be the winner aha.
I love the Penguin clothbound editions! I've also resently started collecting the Chilterns editions, they are so magical!
Aah my friend loves the clothbounds too - I try to gift her one every birthday aha.
Oh what a lovely video. You have to check out the alma classics in the evergreen collection. They are among the most beautiful designs for classics I have ever seen and they are an independent publisher! Win win for all
I collect most of these too 🙈🙈🙈 I don't have the Puffin Sisterhood collection just because I already own all the titles in different editions but they are sooo pretty! I think I started collecting the John Wyndham books thanks to you! I remember seeing them in your videos a few years ago and thought they were so cool (plus I often got them for a very good price!). He's also become one of my fave sci-fi writers. :)
I am a huge fan of vintage classics and pelican Shakespeare
i’d love to see more of these book collection talk-through videos! i loved this so much
I love this, I'd love to have my own beautiful collection of classics like this one day
I am so jealous... In germany there are mostly only one or two different editions of classics (if even) and they often have the most ugliest and plain covers. In recent years they started to release some pretty editions, but it's a rarity.
I collect the penguin cloth bound classics which I just think look stunning in my shelves. I tend to only buy favourites in these editions though as they are pricey.
I am planning on getting my daughter the puffin in bloom collection and I am planning on getting the vintage classics Austen collection, Bronte collection and some of the Russians collection as those books are firm favourites so I don’t mind a duplicate or two.
I love those Shakespeare editions too! I wish they were still in print. And those Michael O'Mara are lovely too and less popular.
Why do they stop making certain editions 😭
I'm pretty sure you can get the penguin shakespeare's at The Globe. I've not been for a while though, so potentially not. The RSC Shakespeare Collection is amazing if you've not managed to check them out!
Why don’t I live in London anymore 😭
You can also find « Flush » in this collection but you will also find it with Persephone Edition (love these).
Watching these videos is so bad for my bank balance!
I collect various second hand and vintage editions of the What Katy Did series, there are some beautiful versions out there with amazing illustrations.
I have both the Austen and Bronte Vintage collection complete, and they look absolutely gorgeous next to each other! 🥰
I'm hoping to get my favorite Austen's in Vintage Editions.
I would love to collect Persephone Books. I currently collect Penguin English library editions, but usually I get what ever pretty edition of a book I like the best. Such as the Pulp Fiction edition of Frankenstein or the Macmillan edition of Dracula
I have Howard's End in the English Library series.
Such a great collection!
Beautiful collections 😍
I bought my set of Virginia Woolf books because of seeing them in your videos! I'd wanted to own some but never found ones I liked and these are just stunning~
We match!
I know R.C. Sheriff only as the author of the play "Journey's End" (which I quite liked) so I was surprised to hear his name in relation to what appears to be a science fiction novel! I had never heard of "The Hopkins Manuscript." Did you like it? There is a published called Thomas Nelson publising classic 19th century novels in a series it calls 'The Seasons' Fine Edition Classics. They are among the most beautiful hardcovers I've ever seen. I bought their "Wuthering Heights" and am looking forward to what other titles they release. Oh, and I just noticed they plan to publish "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (Seasons Edition--Spring) for March 21!
My favourites from this video are the Michael O'Mara collection and the Virginia Woolf collection. I'd one day want to have some books from the Virginia Woolf collection.
I'd like to read some of E.M. Forster's books, but I've never come across a collection of his books that I like.
I have Little Women and A Little Princess in the Puffin In Bloom collection and Anne Of Green Gables, The Secret Garden and The Wind In The Willows in Penguin V&A collection. From Sterling Publishing's Illustrated Classics, I only have The Wind In The Willows.
I picked up a copy of the chrysalids a few months ago at an op shop and just devoured it, so I will definitely have to look into those editions!!! I loveee the penguin english library ones. They’re so floppy which is the best xx
I love the vintage classics sets (collecting the Russian classics and the Jane Austen sets).
I still have those small yellow paperbacks from penguin, 5, the tenant of wildfell hall have in the vintage edition but it’s the only one because e find the font too small, some of the vintage classics, then i have some from the penguin english library, the font size is good i just find the paper too thin i can’t use every marker just the zebra mildliners 📚🤓
There are so many edition of Joseph Conrad's books. I generally like cloth- covered books. Thank you for the video.
I want all the pretty books but tend to read the English Library - they are comfortable in my hands and I like how floppy they are.
Agreed! The best of both worlds 😁
I love collections of classics, but get frustrated if I can’t find something I want to complete a collection. Love Persephone too and recently read A Lady and her Husband by Amber Reeves. It was an interesting look at a middle aged, middle class woman coming of age. I hope your issues with the PHD are resolving themselves 💖
Loved them all especially that sisterhood collection. I really hope I'll leave this country (Algeria) to a better place... we have only cheap book editions either French or Arabic. Sometimes I imagine living in the UK and visiting many bookshops would be so beautiful, literally a dream of mine.
I know Im a bit late to watch this video but I saw that there is a vintage collection from Charles Dickens!! They dont look exactly the same but they are just as stunning😍 ps love ur accent
All of these are gorgeous! Sadly I don't own that many pretty ones, because I really like my classics to have notes on the back ever since I picked up A Tale of Two Cities in the Penguin English Library edition, started reading it, and could not understand a single word of the full-of-references first chapter! 😅
As much as I love the look of the Vintage Classics editions, the two Brontës were a pain to read! I found the binding so tight and awkward to stretch out. So I kind of prefer to look at them but read other versions 😆
I'm really sad that here in Germany publishers rarely re-publish classics and if they do they still chose very "old" and conservative designs. This is in general the reason why I switched to only buying and reading books in English. They're just so much more beautiful. Great video 🥰
From that simplistic grey series, which of those 4 is your favourite?
Thanks for sharing these! So beautiful. 📚 That Virginia Woolf series is gorgeous! Yes, I think you do have all of them. And I dream of having a bookshelf in my home filled with nothing but Persephone books.
I love the Everyman's Library editions. Also, I don't think any editions top the beauty of The Folio Society books. I know they are ridiculously expensive but such a treat. 😄
5:42 it actually took me a while to register that this was a Finnish name 🙈 That’s in no way a personal criticism though, as Finnish is pronounced very differently from Germanic languages and is generally a very difficult language to speak/learn (and the Finns can’t afford to say much on this subject as most of them absolutely butcher the English language when they speak it - because the two languages ARE pronounced SO differently)! But I thought I would give my best tips on how to pronounce Aino-Maija Metsola!
So first things first the rhythm - in Finnish the stress is almost always on the first syllable which is perhaps the biggest reason why your pronunciation sounds almost unrecognisable. So if you correct the stress anyone would be able to understand the name even if the details still weren’t correct.
And here’s the syllable by syllable:
Aino - eye-no, Mai-ja - my-ya (so the ja is pronounced like it is in Jaskier), Met-so-la - the first and last syllable are really straightforward but the “so” is short as in “someone” since it comes after the stress. I hope this helps! 🥳
I love the Penguin deluxe books and their deckled edges...but they are so expensive
I believe you can order the whole box set of those Shakespeare editions on Amazon for just over £17 but there’s only one more left. I own them and they’re so pretty. This is the link if you want to have a look www.amazon.co.uk/William-Shakespeare-collection-12-Books-83-92/dp/B003PJMIEY
A Little Princess👍
The Chiltern classics collection!!! They are all so stunningly beautiful! Check them out if you haven't seen them already (:
Where are the PEL printed?
Where should one start with John Wyndham???
Ooh day of the triffids probably!
@@JeansThoughts thank you. I will try that one first then.
Beautiful collection !! unfortunately in my language they don't do this ... mostly classics are out of print and very old and ugly covers ... they never change them :(
