  • As we travel the world overland in our Land Rover Defender camping car we are always on the lookout for new experiences. When the opportunity arose to work for a few weeks during the cherry harvest in Donnybrook Western Australia we took the offer.
Not only was this an exciting new adventure it was also an opportunity to save a little extra money to help us continue our journey and the videos 😊
We had such a great time picking cherries on Russo Produce farm and met loads of awesome people.
Working outside amongst the cherry trees was a beautiful place to be and we'll remember this period of our lives forever.
Stephy put a lot of hours into filming and editing this video, we really hope you enjoy it ❤️🙏
If enjoy our videos and would like to support to the work we do in creating them we'd love to have you join the team by becoming a patreon and ensuring the videos and journey continue.

If you would like to support us without signing up to Patreon we do have a PayPal account.
The contributions of generous people from all over the world are what makes this possible 🙏🙏🙏

Looks like a bunch of gap year Europeans filling a labor void and suppressing wages for the locals. Don't give me any grief in comments because this happens in the USA also. If fields rot due to no cheap labor to harvest, farmers pay more to the harvesters, thus I and you pay more for our produce. I know it would cost more yet we would now better understand the cost to see if it is a viable product for the region.

    • @Jabber-ig3iw
      @Jabber-ig3iw Před 2 lety +1

Thanks to Brexit there’s no migratory produce pickers for harvests here in UK so lots of food goes to waste, the Brexit knuckleheads just say ‘get the locals to do it’ 🙄🙄, short of forcing them by gunpoint the only way to do that is to pay them a lot of money but joe public expects low prices for food so the supermarkets pay the farmers peanuts. 🙄🙄

Such a stupid and naive comment.
This cherry farm is not 5 miles from a big city, from which people would come to pick cherries.
Across all of Australia are many types of foods, and other products that are grown etc.
In most cases these farms are in rural areas, far away from any big populated towns or cities.
There is not a local population who would be the seasonal work force.
And I stress the word seasonal, as often the period of time whereby things are suitable for picking etc, is a short period of time, once or twice per year.
And different things are suitable for picking at different times of the year, across the whole of Australia
( which is a huge sized country )
This means that the owners of these farms etc, need a lot of people, but only for a short period of time, to pick their particular produce.
The tourist / backpacker community in Australia would normally be hundreds of thousands of people at any given time.
And these people are spread across all of Australia.
Some of these people do travel around and get work at various farms, when the particular produce, eg cherries is ready to pick.
They work for a period of time, earn $$$ and then spend $$$ when they go and travel to different parts of Australia.
Due to Covid, during 2020, most of this tourist / backpacker group of people returned to their home country.
Across all of Australia, many industries were then left with a huge shortage of workforce when the time came to harvest their particular item.
Many industries had well over 70 % of their produce go unpicked and it rotted etc
Farmers etc battle drought / fires and the elements.
A successful picking of their produce is hugely important to them for financial reasons.
The huge lack of tourist / backpacker people in Australia is still ongoing.
There is not a sufficient amount of people from various towns and cities etc who are able to go and do this work.
Since Covid began, travel within Australia has also been extremely difficult as individual states have closed their borders to people from other parts of Australia.
Bottom line is that Australia benefits in a massive number of ways by having a constant huge tourist / backpacker group of people spread across Australia, and who are transient and travel to all parts of Australia.
Without these people who have not been in Australia for nearly two years now, due to Covid, this farmer who grows cherries is just one example of many thousands of rural people who have suffered huge financial losses in the last two years, as a huge portion of their product etc, has not been able to be harvested etc
In many industries, Australia always has a constant labour void, which has been a lot worse without backpackers during Covid.
These backpackers / travellers are hugely important to fill massive labour voids, that constantly exist in Australia.
These backpackers / travellers are most definitely NOT stealing away jobs from locals, OR suppressing wages that locals should get.
Australia does not have enough locals to do these jobs.
And, as I said, Australia is a huge land mass, and sparsely populated, except for a few major cities on our East Coast.
Most of these farms etc are far away from big population centres, so there is never a large group of people living near these farms anyway.

    • @robertrodgers1423
      @robertrodgers1423 Před 2 lety +3

@@StephenFogarty2023 Economics. Raise the wage to the rate at which someone is willing to do it otherwise the position remains empty. Your backpackers are doing the job for cheap relative to a citizen thus suppressing wages for citizens. "These backpackers / travellers are most definitely NOT stealing away jobs from locals, OR suppressing wages that locals should get.". Were there no back packers, wages for local citizens would rise enough to attract labor to complete the job. Would food costs increase, most definitely and maybe they should to reflect the true cost. Higher wages for locals (more spending power by locals), higher taxes on wages (more spending by government), higher food costs (more judicious purchases by consumers). We have a much worse situation in the USA than you have but the economics are the same.

@@Jabber-ig3iw Don't pay enough to harvest , no labor, no harvest, no food, food that is there is expensive, can't afford it, gotta earn more to afford it, wages rise. Pay good wages from the start and the nasty cycle doesn't begin.
