I think Nick Mohammed has demonstrated what a talented actor he is. If you now hate his character, it is because he has done such a remarkable job transforming Nate from underdog to villian. I bet this young man has a very successful acting career, because he sure has the talent.
Yes, he's made it quite believable that all that had to be done is scratch his character to reveal all of the anger the character holds within given his relationship with his father.
He doesn't look 41, not remotely.
That was such an incredible transformation he had to draw us into with such a deep character arc.

Nick KILLED it this season. His acting was phenomenal. I can't say I love Nathan right now but Nick's portrayal of him is to be admired, both the kind Nate and the tormented Nate.
It takes a special actor to really make you hate a character. Jack Gleeson in GoT is probably the best example. Nick is proving himself right up there in ability.

Agreed. I started liking Nate...and slowly I began to look upon Nate in less than a positive way. Nick is great actor. So, I would say to people...."Hate the character but love the actor!"
I always liked the villains the best,, great acting by Nick, but I really hated seeing Nate turned dark….
Tormented is the perfect description. Knowing what Nathan’s upbringing was like means we can understand, if not condone, his horrible behavior. We can only hope for a Jamie Tart type of turnaround. Lousy childhood isn’t a life sentence unless we allow it to be.
Love Nick the Actor. Hate Nate the Snake.
There will be significant backlash against Nate the character, but hopefully not against Nick the actor. He did Emmy award level acting.

I can’t stand Nate right now but I also can’t look away. And that’s a credit to Nick Mohammed’s performance plus the writing. Love the end shot of the season. The graying hair was a brilliant brilliant touch.

In the first scene we see Nate I noticed he had slightly graying hair. Then it going whiter and whiter as the season progressed. So I guess his stress was coming out thru bad behavior and his hair going white. I hate to say it. But I hope Nate fails as head coach. I no longer am rooting for Nate.

This has been an interesting choice. It is common to play a a meek awkward character for laughs, i think that is the expectation. Instead having Nate be a victim of abuse, its true to life to have Nate pass on that abuse. Also you have to admire the thorough foreshadowing.
I love Nick’s portrayal of Nate. It’s so nuanced and tortured, and believe me much of the audience relates to the toxic relationship with a very dismissive parent and his ensuing anger. The writing on this show is phenomenal. Cheers to Nick and the whole cast, can’t wait for Season 3. 🤗🤓😎

But the thing is that wouldn’t have been Ted - and Ted cares so he really wants to understand how he can get things back on track. He doesn’t realize how bad it’s gotten - it’s all heartbreaking as you see this spiral of someone you know has been hurt and is lashing out at all the wrong people.
Nick’s portrayal was sooo good I was super pissed with Nate to the point I had a physical reaction to his performance. That is the sign of an epic delivery. Cheers Nick for a job well done!!!!!

The fact that you can hate Nate the character so much, while watching this interview and love Nick the actor so much, is a testament to just how well the character is played, and how good of an actor Nick Mohammed is.

I think one of the significant moments in why Nate changes and becomes increasingly angry and resentful was when Ted decided to ask Roy to be on the coaching staff. I think Nate feels displaced and then his spiral starts towards where he ends up in episode 12 in season 2.
I definitely don’t condone Nate’s behavior, but it was pretty clear that Nate wasn’t consulted about Roy joining the coaching staff, which was definitely not okay on Ted’s part. Ted also could’ve given Nate a chance to talk to Isaac. That might not have worked out too well, but Nate was the assistant coach, and Ted instead chose to outsource the job to someone who wasn’t even on the coaching staff yet. All of these were valid reasons to be upset, but Nate should’ve talked to Ted or Beard and expressed his concerns instead of lashing out in the ways that he did.
@@jkta97 True, also remember the phrasing, Isaac needs to talk to a real man (or something like that), Nate offers himself and Ted doesn't take it seriously. Also bringing in Roy was a huge attack on Nate's ego because up until that point he held a tactical high ground over everyone in the coaching staff but Roy changes that dynamic, and initially gets a lot of the credit for Richmond's play "The Roy Kent effect".
@@francargeric1 There was also the moment in that episode where Nate tries to blow his whistle and Ted reveals that he replaced it with a wooden one, so that definitely didn’t help either.
@@jkta97 Also I just realized the metaphor behind Nate's suit that Ted got him. It represents the job and the opportunity, yes he gave it to him but he also earn it and is doing his job well, yet he is reminded constantly about it, which makes him feel like he didn't earn the suit (or the job).

But can we all agree that Ted had it pretty tough this season and it was totally understandable that he didn’t notice Nate’s slow transformation into an angry, resentful dude?? Those panic attacks were wonderfully done
I love Nick so much for how he played this role and how he portrayed the deep-rooted issues in Nate’s psyche. Weirdly enough I found myself relating to where he’s coming from and processing my own pent-up problems with validation, which is not an effect I could ever imagine from a comedy series.
What a superb story arc Nate's was. From a guy you instantly liked to one that you wanted to despise. Fantastic writing and acting. Looking forward to season 3.
Amazing actor. Kudos for You. I was shocked today. Transformation from happy dude to his dark side was amazing through whole season. And I noticed that Nick hairs change color from black to grey. He has more gray hairs through the change.
There’s a lot of depth to Nate. He’s confident (as he should be) in his coaching skills but he’s so insecure from years of torment by some of the players and neglect from his father that Nate has begun to be abusive, mistaking assertion for aggression
The writers have left themselves with the terrific potential to contrast Richmond’s teamwork and support and this new West Ham’s bullying drive to stamp out any mistakes. The questions of what makes a great team and what good coaching can create are fascinating.
I’m still playing and there’s a constant conflict between creativity and “keeping it simple” (which is the shout you get when mistakes come from creativity inevitably; usually from those who don’t have the technique to be skilful). The show is in position A to explore these sporting dynamics … oh yeah.. apart from being brilliantly funny.
All the while Roy Kent sits at the confluence between Ted’s nurturing soul and Nate’s struggle for control through abuse like a big fat hippo of pure energy. 😜🤪
Having the producers, writers and actors being a fairly small co-mingled group, and with the all in support from Apple- this is a great race car of a show...I can totally see them making brave(insane) choices other shows would never be allowed to do.... I think most other shows would not have been as brave with this great casting for instance.

I’m calling it now Nate will crash and burn and Rupert will fire him very quickly and Nate will have a breaking point and confront his father and Ted will be there to help him that’s just who Ted is I think he knows something is going on with him

I dunno… what if Nate finds fame and success but a part of him finds it strangely unfulfilling and he longs for the camaraderie of his Richmond dog pack. Plus I’m betting his father still finds a way to be dismissive and critical.

The fact that we all now absolutely loathe Nate is a testament to how great of an actor Nick is.
Props to this guy for doing what needs to be done in portraying his character's pathos and misdirected aggression. I hope that people can separate the character from the actor and not take out their frustration with Nate on Nick. He doesn't deserve any grief about it -- in fact, he deserves nothing but accolades for bringing the character's unique circumstances and preoccupations to life.
I came straight to CZcams after watching the finale because I needed behind the scenes talk. I’m so glad to find this video! Ted Lasso is fantastic (which shouldn't surprise me since I love Scrubs) and keeps getting better and better. Nick, you play Nate so well and I'm very glad they are exploring just how complicated he is as a person. Can't wait to see you in season 3!

What a great job playing such an unusual character. From his nervous approach to a bit of confidence to his overblown ego has been very interesting. His actions in the end here at halftime and after seem to suggest he wanted a reason to take the other job and when he didn't get it he started manufacturing his reasoning. Really interesting behavior.

Nick is such a good actor. I straight hated Nate by the end of the second season, he had reached a fever pitch and had to go, but Nick is such a good balance between Nate in Seasons 1 and 2. He’s not meek or withering, but he’s not a cocky, arrogant ass either, he’s just a good guy. Being able to play those other emotions and personalities so well is Emmy worthy. Not sure he’ll beat Toheeb, but really incredible. But I’m so excited to see what happens in Season 3- according to Ted’s rom-communism theory, we’re in the dark woods, things have gotten bad, but that means we’re going to find our way out and get to a happy conclusion in the future. I hope Nate can redeem himself, it’ll feel a little incomplete if he just goes to the dark side for good.

Amazing interview
Some of the things Nate dawg said to Ted in that scene sounded exactly like things he wanted to say to his dad. The writers showed his issues with his dad very clearly without having to bash the audience over the head with it. It was all well foreshadowed without being too obvious, the necessary set up was executed well enough for that scene to have a big impact.
I’m expecting Nate dawg to start season three off like a house on fire taking the league by storm and defeating Richmond in the first half of the season while Richmond endure a tough start to the season. In the second half of the season I’m anticipating Richmond will start to mount a comeback to save their season and preserve their top flight status while things start to fall apart for our boy Nate at west ham with his toxic behavior catching up with him as he loses the dressing room and performances on the pitch and results start to suffer. I could see the season finale being the return league fixture between the two clubs. They could emphasize the stakes by having that match be the final round of the league and with Richmond needing to win to confirm their premier league survival while west ham might need just a draw to qualify for Europe. A situation where Richmond defy the odds and beat their more fancied opposition. Thus showing Nate that despite his best efforts he was not able to destroy the belief that Ted instilled into Richmond. And it would be an opportunity to show Rupert’s true colors to Nate by sacking him with immediate effect and not even the slightest hint of remorse and compassion.
I think Rupert is going to ask Nate to do something heinous and crossing a line and Nate will put on his big boy pants and shift and will either throw the finale game to Richmond for Ted or quit and try to help Richmond since he knows all of Rupert’s teams plays and weaknesses. And he will do it without being hired by Richmond…as a final act of forgiveness to Ted who of course takes him back in the fold.
I thought it was so interesting for Nick to mention the writers potentially making a character who is beyond redemption, someone who is just purely bad. Nate may end up there, but Rupert will never and should never leave the pit of hell he resides in. In my eyes he’s the only true villain in the show (aside from Jamie’s dad, but Rupert actually has the power to impact others)
@@andrewnibbi yeah I agree that Rupert is one of the few characters beyond redemption. He has massive wealth, influence and is full of spite. Jamie’s dad is a piece of shit and is proud of it and is seemingly too old to ever want to change his ways.
Nate I could see changing once he realizes the error of his ways. At the end of season 2 he has a very inflated view of himself and he thinks he’s where he belongs at the top of the food chain. He can’t quite see that he’s being used and that he’ll be discarded the moment he’s deemed no longer useful. Although I can’t quite see him being welcomed back at Richmond if he goes hard on burning bridges while he’s flying high at west ham. Even if Ted can forgive him I don’t think the players would want him back.
For Nate’s redemption to be believable he’ll have to confront the issues he has with his father. Not to mention that going from being a head coach back to being part of the coaching staff of a “lesser” club would be extremely humbling and it’s not something that is seen in real life and it might break the immersion if they had Nate rejoin Richmond too soon if at all.

Nate went to work for Rupert who will truly screw him over in Season 3.

Nick is great. Started watching him on 8 out of 10 cats does countdown. Really enjoying how he has taken Nate to another level. A WWE-caliber heel turn.
After watching Nate go off on Ted, I went back and watched both seasons to see if I missed anything. But hearing Nick explain things made me fell better. I can't wait to see season 3.
The Nate character is basically what a lifetime of enduring abuse and ridicule can turn a good man into, and Nick portrays that slow transformation brilliantly. Even though he's gone full villain, you still can't hate the character because you can sense there's still good in him and I look forward to Lasso bringing Nate Dogg back on track. Brilliant show. Let's all be kind to the Nates in our lives...
Have you noticed that as Nate gets more into his villian role, his hair is getting grayer? It is like the stress from his situation is changing him physically as well as emotionally...

Throughout the first season I had this deja vu feeling that hit movie Love Actually was being channeled into this series, and the second season the door to door search at Christmas time, the music, all the scenes of Christmas gatherings and the scene of the little girl with the flash cards, all Love Actually scenes. I enjoy the series very much, but I’ve seen Love Actually every Christmas season for years and this was so reminiscent. ❤️

What’s amazing about this was that first watch I was like “wait what that was so sudden I only noticed his tweet obsession” but then you look back and the amazingly subtle signs are all there that he was turning, showing the progression of Nate.
I keep screaming this up and down the comment section! Nate was NEVER a good guy, and he demonstrates this in his very first scene, and keeps the subtle hints coming the entire time until the snap

Absolutely brilliant performance. The character ark of Nate is hard to turn away from. Geek to freak is cool. I feel for his character and hope he finds happiness and his kind self back. Season 3 is going to be can’t miss tv.

Nate’s character in the show is just developing! by the end of season 3 Nate will be one of the best coaches of the premier league. At the end of season 3, it’ll be Nate‘s team versus Richmond

I honestly somewhat understand the bully arc of Nate. Think about it, his dad already treats him like garbage and all Nate’s trying to do is prove himself. So when the man that is like the father that he never had “turns on him” he feels true betrayal. And think about it, Jamie was a bully because his dad treated him like shit but his teammates and Ted helped him out of that state. But Nate, he didn’t have anyone to pull him out and say it was wrong. But another thing that adds to it is that being around Richmond and seeing Will. Though he now has power he is still constantly being reminded of his weaker self. I would say overall he’s become the tiger that he said he wanted to be when he died. Granted though, the tiger is a prick right now.
He was also bullied by Jamie and the guys who followed him.

While I was watching season two, I noticed Nate's hair getting progressively more gray and I told my girlfriend that it was his "descent into evil. He's gonna betray the team somehow". Excellent performance.

Agreed, Roger. I think Nate the Great will be redeemed, but probably towards the end of Season 3. I reckon the relationship with his Dad will be explored, as well.
I am surprised they don't mention the fact that Season 2 Nate is obviously hurting from trauma from his childhood - probably form his father. I felt that that was obvious - the self loathing, hurt from being not noticed and respected.
They did mention that? Specifically that he has an abusive relationship with his father and that he's a bully after being bullied.

I think the way Nate gains Richmond's trust back is with a parallelism in which he apologizes the same way he roasted them in S1. Starting with the group as a whole then the kit man, Roy, Colin, and finally Ted.

One question I was really hoping you would ask…”what’s with Nate’s hair?”. If you watch his hair it gets progressively more and more grey as the season goes on until the last scene when it is nearly all grey. This is obviously to support the plot and I have my ideas as to what it means but I would love to see Nick’s answer.
It's interesting that he allows his hair to go grey because he said early on that he was deeply afraid of aging...no long hot baths? Hmmmmm...
After season two I hate Nate but Nick is a great dude and one hell of an actor. Can’t wait to see his character development in season three
I hate Nate too. Ted promoted him to a coach after being a locker room attendant and this is how he repays him? Shame on Nate. He is a bad guy. He had better redeem himself by the end of Season 3 or I'm sending Phoebe to his house to give him a stern talking to.
Both Nick, the writing team and especially Sudeikus's vision are very clever with what they've done with Nates's character arc. Season 1 setup up the general Coach Lasso 'ethos' - vulnerability, kindness, empathy, empowerment and things that undermine that. But its easy to have affinity with people we are sympathetic with, no matter how flawed they are - we identify with them. We don't so easily identify with the 'villain' or the unsympathetic person, that's what season 2-3 is testing US the audience with.
Can we have empathy with those we hold opposing views with? Can we find common ground? Can WE forgive someone who has erred? It speaks to much of the toxic discourse that floods our media, social circles and political climate... Ted Lasso is very clever social satire and critique.. Bravo

S2 has been described as Empire Strikes Back, but I think it’s more Attack of the Clones. Nate (Anakin) is seduced by Rupert (Palpatine) to turn against Ted/Beard (Obi-Wan). Nate’s even wearing black. This arc leaves the redemption story completely up in the air. Looking forward to S3.
Yes! This was my immediate impression as well! Nate was Anakin! It was really interesting to hear him mention empire strikes back, and to not see more people draw lines between this show and the Star Wars prequils.

Ted was instrumental in redeeming Jamie's character. Jamie's lack of maturity was definitely his flaw, but Ted was the engine that turned Jamie's character arc around.
so Ted definitely deserves the credit for that.
Ted was also instrumental in Nate's evolution. yes, he elevated and encouraged Nate to be a leader. BUT Ted also failed to provide Nate the tools to be a good leader.
and this makes Ted an even greater character himself. as it shows that NOT ALL his attempts at making other people better are successes.
Nick Mohammed is one of those British comedy actors that has worked hard and you’ll have seen him for many years usually in the background and smaller parts of British tv shows and films. He did do a intelligence with David Schwimmer but it would seem Ted Lasso has really put Nick on the map. He does play a certain role but he does it well and Tes Lasso is a stand out show that he is one of the stand out performers.
Series 3 will be interesting and looking forward to Nates storyline, I hope it goes darker.

I hope we don't get the predictable redemption arc. Nate is an a#$hole, let him be an a#$hole. He will shout and be a dick to the players at Rupert's new club, Rupert will can him when they start losing, blaming it all on Nate and Nate will get angrier and blame everyone else but himself. Some people are just shitty, let him be shitty and pay the price for it. The redemption arc is just too predictable and something that keeps getting repeated in this show.
Ted will try his best to kill Nate with kindness.

Have you ever considered that the opening title sequence stinger music might be a bit too loud and by a bit I mean ear splitting.
His fall and heal turn was so simple yet sweet because it can be summed up in a single word, pride. The dude feel to pride mixed in with some basic jealousy and envy because he never had any power before now.
Plus thou the show doesn’t show it do to the time jumps it actually took him almost a year and a half to fall to it. It took a season and a half (in this case literally do to sporting season’s) to make him do the unfergivable.
I will never ever forgive Nate for his behaviour!! (Proves what a great actor Nick Mohammad is!!)
For me the real beginning of Nates turn, in retrospect, was when he asks Keely to help make him famous.

I think it shows his transformation into his father. He has a toxic relationship with his dad and he has become the figure he dislikes.
The incoming redemption arc will get him that Emmy next year mark my words.

One thing that I’m disappointed that isn’t touched upon is Nate’s clear self-hatred of himself. He’s seeking validation he wants to be valued and eventually he just starts engaging in self-destructive behavior. Like you see Nate in the final episode basically admitting to something with the intent of trying to get Roy to hit him. He’s searching for an excuse to destroy his relationships because he doesn’t believe in himself and thinks those who have previously validated him are gas lighting him.
I absolutely loved Nate’s character this whole season. Incredible acting 👏🏻
