Legendary Jordanian Street Food at Hashem Restaurant - Amman, Jordan!

- Hashem Restaurant is probably one of the most famous and one of the oldest restaurants in downtown Amman. And not only are they located in a great location, but they serve very good food. For more information check out my Amman Travel Guide: migrationology.com/travel-guid...
On Day 11, Ying and I were on our own. Although I had some video editing and blogging that I needed to do, we did a little bit of exploring, and I really wanted to eat at the legendary Hashem Restaurant. From our hotel, we took a short walk down the hill, enjoying some great views of Amman, until we reached the bottom of the valley where downtown is located. We arrived around 11 am in the morning, and from the steps we took down the hill, we arrived just a turn away from the entrance of Hashem Restaurant - very convenient.
The restaurant was packed and bustling. I would like to quickly mention that meals are eaten pretty late in Jordan, many people don’t eat breakfast until 9, 10, or even 11 am, so I think most of the people eating when we arrived were mostly having breakfast. Lunch is typically eaten more around the 2 pm - 4 pm time range. It took a few minutes, but we found a table that someone left, and after getting it cleared, we sat down and ordered. I don’t think they really have a menu at Hashem Restaurant, but they have all the basic dishes like hummus, ful, moutabel, and falafel - the hummus and falafel, including the stuffed falafel are some of the most famous dishes they serve. Hashem Restaurant has been visited by many famous people from around the world, and it seems that many Royalty, politicians and celebrities, when they visit Amman, make it a point to eat here. So I was pretty excited to eat here too.
I ordered a range of different dishes to try, including hummus, moutabel, ful medames, and finally both normal falafel and stuffed falafel. The stuffed falafel were about twice the size, and stuffed with onions and sumac, they were delicious. The hummus, topped with a generous amount of olive oil, was also extremely good, with a very refreshing lemon taste, and I really liked how they added on some green chili sauce to the top. With a little red chili sauce and using bread to dip it up, the hummus was excellent. The ful was also wonderful, with lots of olive oil and green chili sauce on top to make it even better. And finally the moutabel, one of my personal favorites, didn’t let me down either. It was smoky and creamy, with nearly the consistency of whipped cream.
After a delicious meal at one of the most famous restaurant in Amman, we headed back up the hill and started walking back to our hotel. We stopped at a fruit store and bought a bag of different fruit to eat through the afternoon, including some more wonderful green almonds.

One of the things I love most about your travel videos Mark is that you describe and get excited about simple food...hummus, fresh almonds, the tartness of lemons, the saltiness of chili sauce. Basic food that's more common for people to experience in their lives and appreciate more because of how you've elevated it in your series. Being a foodie doesn't require complex dishes and unattainable ingredients and you remind people of that.
Amen to that! One more thing I appreciate about Mark's videos is the plain simplicity in which they are shot. There are no gimmicks, no attempt at glorifying a certain dish with filters in the editing process. I love how all his videos have achieved that authenticity by being as minimal as possible. :)

This restaurant is more like "your style". Much more enjoyable than the fancy ones. And that waiter cared 0% for the camera. That's 100% genuine 😂

You can tell Mark truly loves his job of food journalism, because he doesn't let the nature of that restaurant influence his view of the quality of the food. It's very easy to let service get in the way of the chefs skills.

You have to go to Jafra downtown and order the fatoush. It's a hip hookah restaurant but has an authentic feel with a cool small library. A few doors down is a hookah bar. The old Bedouin pictures on the first floor are amazing.
There is a small pizza restaurant on Sharia Rainbow. Their mint and ham pizza is the best but try their potato wedges too.
Also try Books Cafe.
By the way there a lot of other food to try haha 😂

+The Space Between why to wear it? it is not a must in Jordan just watch the video and you can tell there are a lot of women doesn't wear it !! don't mix Saudi with Jordan every country is different !!

The government is Shariah influenced, but it's not strict and forceful like Saudi Arabia and Iran, where the average woman has to cover up in public. Most Muslim countries other than these are quite accepting of women wearing what they want because most attires are modest in these cultures, regardless.
Excellent. A country of rich in culture and history. I recall my recent visit to Amman and Petra. You can see many Falasteenians in Jordan.

the food is so good, I want to become Jordanian. I love how they cook the beans - so many combinations, salads and vegetable dishes - eggplant dip ! - fantastic . At least I should learn cooking my food Jordanian style !

I got to say I was a little sad, that the Jordan videos are about to come to the end. I really like this kind of videos from you. staying in a place/country and getting a deep impression/experience. food mix some scenery and hotel reviews. but this kind of videos are required a lot organisation.

Im never jealous of anyone...until now matey...lol..I spent a coupla weeks in Israel as a kid and refused to eat most of the food. (as kids do) And now im a Chef and i love everything ive seen on your vids. I just wish i tried them when i had the chance to taste the authentic dishes.. However, I can still smell the coffee and spices wafting down the Bazaar/Streets of Jerusalem even now, after 38 years it is still emblazoned on my mind. Watching your vid brought memories flooding back, Thankyou.
