    As a salvadorian , ppl shit on him they call him dictator. But he the only one who has put his ppl first the gangs literally ran El Salvador , they were territorial that even if you weren’t in a gang you still couldn’t go to a different territory , they would steal money from ppls honest work , they would kill , grape and put terror in ppls heart that they didn’t even feel safe in their homes everything bukele has done he has shown his ppl he doesn’t keep anything under the rug and ppl agree with him it went from the worlds most dangerous place to the safest and I saw chat saying “ tattoos = jail” lmao if you got a tattoo saying ms13 no regular person will have a gangs tattoo 💀

      fair point..then again this is a movie we've seen too many times - Bukele is not a genius, he is not extraordinary and he is not unique..he is a dictator and he has started out like most dictators have
      you think Bolsonaro or Donald Trump didn't try to seize power? truth is they had to contend with stronger democratic institutions and they didn't do enough in their term to gain large enough popular support to win a second term - if they had they could have undermined the institutions enough perhaps to stage coups
      most dictators enjoyed large popular support in their early years: when Hitler smashed the treaty of Versailles and rebuilt infrastructure and employment went up he was hugely popular, when Putin checked the wide-spread corruption of the oligarchs in post-soviet Russia, rebuilt the country's finances and stomped crime he enjoyed massive popular support, when the post-independence dictators of Africa rose to power they enjoyed massive popular support for liberating the people... but the story sadly never ends there does it? They are successful initially because they rule with heavy hand, eliminating opposition, finally getting things done...but when the people ARE safe, when they ARE fed, when they want to decide a few things, disagree or want basic liberties and support for the dictator erodes, they suddenly face a military that's well equipped, a government they cannot influence, a wealthy elite that props up the regime, a judiciary that is not protecting but persecuting them..they are powerless to do anything about it, the dictator's circle of confidants becomes ever smaller, ever more corrupt, the means of ruling ever more repressive and it's too late to do anything about it - you get dragged into wars you don't want, your liberties taken, can be locked up for nothing, no social mobility...you're trading short-term relief from terror for long-term terror by the regime
      is it worth it? that's the age-old question isn't it?

      We also have to take in consideration people were already living in conditions similar to if they had a dictator with bad intentions.
      People are not dumb, I assume they weigh the risks of it going bad with what they were living through.
      They already had no power, Bukele gave them power, weather or not they're gonna lose that power, that's for future to tell.
      At best they get to live freely with way less violence, at worst it either goes back to the way it was or they get their own Kim Jong-un.
      Oh yeah, there's always the risk they live with less violence but the economy tanks and they suffer in another way.

    He is forsure an anomaly when it comes to being morally non corrupt. I support 99% of the things he has done (I'm salvadorian) but as history has taught us, you always need to be aware of leaders that gain all the power and never blindly follow them. So far he seems like he listens to the people and if most decide to kick him out, he most likely will step out even with having all legal control. I also want to people to understand that the arbitrary arresting was the best solution. There will never be a 100% accurate system to eliminate crime without innocents getting caught in the crossfire. Most salvadorians adopted a sixth sense to know when someone is gang affiliated which is why it worked almost perfectly.

Once civilians feel confident in their leader's capability and (more importantly) trust them, people who are on the fence will DELIBERATELY separate themselves from any gang affiliation even if hurts them economically/socially in the short term, because they know the fist of the law will fuck them harder than any gang could in the long term.

    El Salvador is a "Benevolent dictatorship", The problem with this is that precisely since it is a dictatorship, even if the majority approves it and generates positive changes, the successor or one of the dictator's successors can do a 180, since there is precisely no separation of powers.
    As long as Nayib Bukele is young and healthy, El Salvador will improve, but the future after Bukele retires is very uncertain, even if he plans for that future, Someone in his party can just gain a ton of popularity and destroy all of that.

    People forget that nations evolved into democracies. You can not just decide that a state that can't even control it's territory has to follow the rules that evolved in countries that had a totally different reality. Is it a democracy if part of the country is controlled by criminal gangs and not even the police can enter there? How is that a democracy if your family members can get k1lled and you know there is nothing you can do?
    I do think that the democratic system is the best we've got, but to have that you need A system, not two or three fighting for power over the same group of people.

    The El Salvador situation is (and I know this sounds so stupid and privileged but) a *very* interesting and pertinent philosophical question. Actually many questions. If the good of many outways the harm of a few, as is the point of democracy, then what is wrong with a government where 2% of people are sacrificed and put in prison for the good of everyone else? Also, the idea that a (seemingly, perhaps questionably) good person is capable of being put into office and just making life better for everyone is quite interesting in itself. Would another country also want a benevolent dictator? idk

      @stickmanreaper4628 Před měsícem

      I think dictatorships have been used across history mostly for nefarious reasons, so it's hard to see how it can be good. But when someone like Bukele gets that and is someone good, smart and cares for his people, then yeah, I think most people would love something like this. Reason being: he gets shit done. Unlike most politicians in modern democracy, he actually solves issues and improves the lives of his people. Not saying this is the way, but if it's between someone like him and a corrupt government that doesn't care, then yeah, most people would be happy with it.

Fascism should always temporary though, the problems with it come from it being extended indefinitely. Julius Caesar was extremely popular among the Roman people and did them a lot of good, handing out free money like he's Oprah, but his ambitions to have complete control and turn the republic into a monarchy is what got him assassinated.
