I have a soul crushing office job and have been trying to think of ways to paint on break or over lunch in my car, but the time is so short I wasn't certain I could do anything useful other than brush or color practice. Your tip for doing small studies is perfect, thank you for sharing that. It will definitely be used!

Something else that’s helpful is to actually NOT put your supplies away when you’re done with them and leave them out to have easy access to them in an area where you often have open access to like a dining room table or coffee table. It’s easier to just be able to walk by a common area and already have your supplies ready to go than to have to pull it all out, set it all up and then get in the mindset of getting ready to paint. You’ll have an easier time trying to convince yourself you really don’t have the time if you have to do all that ‘work’ to set it all up before you can paint over just already having it ready and waiting for you to use it if you only have a few mins here and there to do so during your day. If you’re already set up, you’ll also tend to invest in spending more time you really didn’t think you had to spend painting.
And the reality of the matter also is, is that no one is THAT busy during their day that they cannot carve out 5 mins to invest in something they love. People really need to be real with themselves if they’re really serious about wanting to do something they love. The problem really tends to be is that we just don’t prioritize it and spend our time doing other things we really don’t care as much about and convince ourselves that we don’t have the time while doing other things like binge scrolling online or binge season watching their favorite shows on Netflix instead.
Get yourself a small set up and have it ready to go, out in the open and where you will see it and have easy access to it all for the next time you have some more time to paint and it will be worth it!

Great ideas! I often wonder how You Tube artists/teachers/business owners have the time to do it all, and raise a family, keep a clean house, etc., etc., and then create art! God Bless you, you’re a better woman than I am, that’s for sure. Just wanted to add that there is something that I personally do to save time: on all videos except music, I listen at double the normal speed. In this way, I feel I can listen/ learn twice as much, as well as twice as fast. People who have overheard me doing this have been startled, asking me how I could manage to learn anything this way, to them it sounds like gibberish, so I just tell people, “try it before you knock it. You may just surprise yourself”. When I listen at double speed, I pay closer attention, and learn better than when I’m just mozeeing along at normal speed, lol. As with all things, including learning how to paint with watercolors, it makes life more fun to challenge oneself. If it wasn’t hard, then everybody could do it..

I'm in the UK - and always said I couldn't wait till I retired so I could paint most of the day: guess what, I am retired now and still 'complain' about the lack of time! Is it an excuse we make - who knows, however watching your video gave me lots of ideas which I'll follow up on - and I've decided not to complain about lack of time anymore. I love your videos Emily and look forward to your emails telling me of the new ones - many thanks for your inspiration! You are a very sweet lady.

I just read your comment & I can definitely relate. I’ll be 64 this year and I just started painting & practicing the last few months. It’s helped me to paint the same thing over & over again. I love seeing how I improve each time. Hang in there & start painting!!!

Really good tips. Lately, I've been finding myself thinking about how I would draw or paint something, or studying how the light hits a subject and how it affects everything surrounding it. It never occurred to me that I was actually building my skill. Thank you for a fresh, new perspective!

I remember my friend telling me once that I seemed to see everything "as beautiful"... She doesn't know that in the back of my head, I am assessing it through different categories, values, construction, details... And thinking to myself that it's good for my studies. Which makes it interesting 😂

I haven't painted or drawn anything since I started my last year of university in September. Even If I have free time, I feel guilty if I try to paint because my brain thinks that I should be using that time for something more productive. So I end up watching youtube in a loop because that's a passive act and doesn't take the effort and planning that I should be putting into something else. I know it sounds stupid but I struggle with absurd thoughts like that. I don't play videogames either because it's the same concept.

I’ve been taking pictures and drawing them as we camp. I brought pastel pencils and a few pan pastels and have painted a couple things. I have a watercolor started at home. I enjoy your tutorials and i have a great start on a portrait at home and I’m enjoying it and like it so far. I’ve sketched a few things also. Thank you so much Emily!

I'm always looking at greens and thinking about the crayon names I had as a child. So many come to mind!! Now, can I recreate these colors on paper? 😅
