Nah, surfing ability and talent grows exponentially over time from generation to generation. What the crew these days are doing is way gnarlier than what crew were doing 10+ years ago. Especially backhand tube riding, airs and big wave surfing...Have a look at what the lady birds are doing, they are what 12 or 13. Smacking the lip and boosting airs way harder than the women's CT surfers. Also, getting way more barreled over in Indo, supreme technique.

I sat watching this break in about feb 2007 when travelling alone. There was nobody there and it was well overhead. After half an hour I removed my leash and boots, and walked away. Good decision!
In hindsight Chris Ward riding on a 5'5 19 1/4 on those waves is kinda insane

@@Dill_doh Watch the documentary Andy Irons 'Kissed by God' It's about his life. It's really heartbreaking to see what happened to Andy, but you'll be shocked by the story of this particular contest and just how off his head he was the whole time. They literally dragged him straight away from the contest after his win, in a car because he was in such a bad drug-induced state. He was still surfing amazing, but not in a state to be seen by the public or speak to a camera! Really bloody sad!!

It's amazing to see the kind of composure Andy Irons had in the water. A lot of these newer surfers train and work their bodies out eat healthy everyday of the week. This guy partied like there was no tomorrow and still would beat anyone any day of the week. Guys like Kelly Slater who embody how the new generation trains probably hated his guts for the fact that he'd show up to the competition hungover and still surf better than you.

@@cwalt4089 Surfing is going to go where the money supports it. Where fans come out to watch and pay. Where sponsors give money to have events. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. It's a business. And it's a business that can provide the best young contest type surfers with a living that they would never have in any kind of normal life. It's totally naive to think that contests should be about the "best wave" or "best place". If people in those areas don't support by sponsoring or coming out to pay and watch, then that's their own fault.

El Gringo. It’s in Arica, Chile. The Chilean pipeline. No need to keep it secret. It’s a mission to get to. It’s pretty remote. And extremely gnarly and intense. Mostly a bodyboarders haunt for obvious reasons. You definitely need to be at least a little bit crazy to surf it. And obviously it’s for experts only. Boards and bodies get broken there every time there’s a swell. Crazy wave
