I hope you have a great day!!!! - Dawn
Ages 8-12 or 8-13? The last video, you said 8-13, and now you're saying 8-12.
Good, but plastic can be replaced with Bamboo Baskets or wooden boxes
@@SundayVibes_Funday Only if that's compatible with your organizing style - hidden bugs, definitely, but visual bugs generally need to see their stuff through the basket/box material.
Tom is absolutely right in his card to you. You are a dream come true, he is so lucky. All the best to you both and kids !! 😘
I was adopted at 6 years old. In my early 30s I was reunited with my birth mother. She had kept things from my early childhood: a pair of booties, a baby blanket, my first Christmas ornament and a small photo album. It's literally perfect. More and it would be overwhelming. It's small and enjoyable.
That is beautiful!
Joanna😢 I am so happy for you! That’s wonderful that your birth Mother kept some of your things.❤❤❤ This really touched my heart.
I lived with my mom she keep nothing. She wasn't the worse mom but I hoard bc I don't remember or have anything from my childhood
@@matemahe isn't it amazing how deeply our childhood affects us?!
Aww what a precious story, it brought tears to my eyes. ❤️
We've started a tradition of looking through the child's memory box on their birthday. This is especially special for our 3rd son who is adopted. His birthday used to trigger a lot of anxiety, but I think this tradition is helping change that.
My Father had a storage unit that he wanted to get out of, but was having a hard time decluttering the unit to a manageable size to store at his house. I came over one today to help him and introduced him to idea of these three bins. He was blown away at how quickly he was able to make decisions without feeling that guilt or uneasiness of making a wrong decluttering decision. I'm so excited he was open to this idea. He is now fully out of that storage unit and everything is neatly tucked away in his backyard shed. I'm so proud of him.
That is amazing!!
And worth its weight in gold (or at least $$$) for no longer paying on a rental unit
That is so cool! I'm glad for both of you.
That card from Corbin is a testament TO your homeschooling skills! He is using phonics to sound out each individual sound in the word ‘from’. Everyone spells things incorrectly, it’s hard to have it all memorized, but using phonemic awareness and phonics to sound out a tricky work is an essential writing skill!
I really appreciate this, thank you!!!!!
My 14 yr old still spells things like this but he has dyslexia. He is super smart but spelling is hard for him. At Corbin's age it is very normal
Reading comes before spelling. My 8 year old almost 9 is really struggling with spelling but I tell her she is doing her best when she sounds it out! Great writing Corbin!
And he put a vowel in there! That’s knowing something comes between and consonants! Good job!
Very true!
All my life my mom had a give away bag going. When full she donated it. Years later I still it going.
Dawn, you are my joy and inspiration! I am decluttering/ minimizing 40+ years of household & business inventory, and am doing it all without any help. I watch at least one of your videos every day, and your cheerful suggestions and commentary are truly the most helpful I have listened to. You are uplifting, encouraging, and supportive. Thank you! ❤️
me too! listening to Dawn while decluttering makes me feel like she is right there beside me and it's so much easier to do it... all the best!
This means more than you know! Thank you so much and ALL my love and extra energy to you!!! 🥰
I'm getting ready to go through 10+years of paper clutter. At some point near the mid, I started mixing my personal and business documents and now I have to sort and declutter. Good luck C Day!! I wish you lots of energy and motivation to get through it. I'll be rooting for you!! 🙂
Yes! I save Dawns videos as a treat for when I’m decluttering - it makes me excited to get to work!
The beauty of the memory box is that it doesn't have to be perfectly organized on day one, but at least it's all together in one place and contained and that you can work on decluttering and organizing it through the years.
YES! Thank you for mentioning this!!! Well said!!
A memory box also means that in a disaster; you can quickly grab sentimental items. Thank you for your amazing videos!
I do something similar but with a different twist. I have four kids that go to daycare and school. They're always coming home with papers, crafts, and junk toys. I realized I had to put a "filter" on my house and find a spot to put these right away before they got scattered across the house. So I started putting them in a basket on top of the fridge. That way they couldn't see it, but if they requested something a few days later that they brought home, I just grab it out from the basket. then after some time I recycle or dump the stuff. We call it the "Bermuda basket" as it's the place where things go to disappear; referencing the Bermuda triangle. (My sister named it). I've started to do that with kids toys call the Bermuda box. That allows some time for it to disappear from their memory and provide confirmation that I can get rid of it..
My oldest is 25 and just a few days ago I gave him his box. I had gone through it and sent him a few things that were his that he is now using for his 2 year old son. Which is super cool IMO! After looking through it he asked me to keep it for him as he is in the military and they move a lot. It’s a small box and it was nice to be able to look through it with him and see his happiness at the few important things I kept for him.

What’s excellent about these bins (which I learned from you) is that WE decide how big they are. We decide how much space we want to dedicate to things that are not used on a regular basis. For me they will be pretty small, but for some people they will be much larger or multiple, and that is perfectly okay.
Yes! Well said!!!❤
Yes- it is important to apply the concept in our own individual way/size/time. I am currently tackling my basement, which has become an overwhelming "time will tell bin" and/or "doom box" filled with too much memorabilia, too many keepsakes, and too many "deferred decisions." My spouse says I'm often crippled by decision (similar to decision fatigue) - i get overwhelmed, emotional, exhausted, and I simply shut down. We are about to enter a new chapter in our lives (either buying the house we've been renting for the last 9 years, thus giving us the opportunity to refurbish and renovate the home , or moving out . Either way, the decluttering journey is happening!)
I am struggling with downsizing from an entire room of sentimental clutter, and determining what to keep, and how much. I am an only child, of divorced parents, both of whom have had to downsize, and moved several times since last moved. I need to decide that it's ok (and necessary) to downsize my "keep box(es)" from an entire basement, to a more manageable size. I had a small win yesterday, when my mom agreed to take back her grandmother's china (four boxes full - it is a beautiful, sizable collection) that I was storing for her.
Don’t know where I’d be without your inspiration and insight on decluttering! I’m always saying, “Minimal Mom says…” 😂
Me too! 😂
Dawn, I don't remember how I found you. It's been over a year ago i]I think. I am 63 years old. I have struggled with this house full of stuff thing a long time. I have had a goal of decluttering for literally for probably 20 years now. I have made more progress, and felt better about the process in the last year than ever! I love watching every video I have seen! I also love that you have connected us with some others that help too. This has made me more hopeful that I can get this done and maintain it while I am able to still do it. I don't want my son to have a lot to go through or to get ride of someday! I also want a tidy, well organized home! Thank you so much! I love seeing you smile, and hearing your laughter! Who doesn't need more of that in their life?
Both my kids have memory bins. They are 17 and 21. Each bin has what is most special to them. The bins are not huge but big enough to store what was most important to them. I also wrote letters to them from new born to age 5. They both have their completed filled out baby books, some special outfits, and toys. I was adopted and I was abandoned at 6 months adopted at 2. My first 2 years are incomplete. I always promised myself that when I had kids they would have very detailed memories written down from newborn to age 5. Anything they kept after age 5 was up to them so long as they loved what they wanted to keep.
I also had to keep school portfolios because of the states we homeschooled in. So each child has a binder from each school year of all their accomplishments field trips medical records and photos from that year. Each binder is labeled and very organized.
I don’t have a time will tell bin either. I made one for my husband ….. he doesn’t use it at all because he prefers piles of stuff all over his desk . I think I’m going to get rid of it because he will deal with his stuff when he accidentally spills coffee on his desk. It works for him.
Love this so much!!! Thanks for the smile!
Just moved into my fifth and FINAL house ... I'm so over most of this stuff! I feel like I've been purging forever! I love the idea of a memory box for loved ones that have passed! Instead of keeping every little thing! Keep up the great ideas!
The bundt cake pan got me. I have 2 and will never need 2 of them. I'm in FL and we just had a hurricane a couple weeks ago. It has given me a different outlook on my things, like my 15 deodorants, 40 hair condioners, and all the stuff
Oh man, I bet that does make you look at every single thing differently!!! (Make sure to keep at least one of the bundt cake pans ;)
The sight of that bundt pan got to me also. I know I have one -- somewhere. I've never unpacked all my kitchen pans and utensils when I downsized my home. I've wanted to use one a couple of times in the last couple years but refuse to go buy one. I just can't find the one I know I have! Must be time to declutter the attic!
I have a basket on my desk where I used to put catalogue, bills, cards etc. That basket used to make me nervous. I never understood why until I watched your paper organization video. Now I only have time will tell papers in that basket. Bills and purchase lists I put on a hook above the desk. On another hook beside it, I put action papers. Letters to respond to, appointments to keep etc. So once you verbalized your paper organization I understood why the basket made me nervous. It's no longer the abyss where bills go to die.
I packed half of the house for moving. We will move next year. So far, only a kitchen tool was needed. Our next home will be so much simpler and easier to keep, I look forward to moving!
This is awesome!!!
So exciting! Oh MAN is your future self in your new home gonna thank you! Way to go doing so much ahead of time. 👏😄
@@TheMinimalMom it's all your influence Dawn! We love you! Hugs!
Wow great job! Ian in the process of doing this too
The TIME WILL TELL BIN is a game changer in my fight against clutter. My husband has dementia and since it is difficult for him to make decisions, he is unable to part with his clutter. His condition also causes him to get confused easily so when I bought him a new updated XBox console for his birthday recently, he agreed that we would pull the other two older XBox models and a PlayStation off the entertainment shelf to reduce complexity/confusion. That sounded like a firm plan until, that is, when it actually came time to purge the old consoles. Nope he said, he wanted to keep everything! He had no good rationale for keeping the old equipment but was determined. After the consoles took up breakfast bar space for about three weeks (I kid you not), I decided to offer him a TIME WILL TELL BIN. I could hardly believe it when agreed. The agreement is that if we have no need to get anything from the bin by December 1, then the entire bin will be donated. WIN! (Crazy but true: When I went to store the bin in a room my husband used to use as an office, I found three more duplicate gaming consoles that have never even been hooked up! Since they have been sitting there for about eight years, they also went into the TIME WILL TELL BIN. Is that crazy or what!!?)
I now fully understand the value of using a TIME WILL TELL BIN/BOX when helping others declutter when they are having a difficult time letting go. It will work as long as you stick with the agreed upon purge date and you don't involve them in that activity.
Love you Dawn. Thanks for all your help.
Well done. Related to "Time-Will-Tell" I did when I first began decluttering with Flylady was to set up a Shop-At-Home shelf (mine was in our laundry closet) for extra hygiene supplies I knew we used (like your deodorant). We lived in the country, so when I did my big payday shopping lists the first place I shopped was there. It was 2 or 3 YEARS before I had to buy soap of any kind. 🥳
Hahaha. Great. Love it. I’m like that too. 👍🏾👍🏾
I did the same thing with my spice cabinet a couple of weeks ago! I was looking for something and couldn’t find it and finally decided to take everything off of 3 shelves and go thru it. I had 2 and 3 or more of some spices because they ended up getting lost in the cabinet. So I put one of everything back in the cabinet and organized them into the ones I use most, less, and ones I use mostly in baking. I put the others in a box in another cabinet with some empty space and now when I run out I know to look there first! I also did the same thing with flour and sugar and extra stuff like that. Organizing and minimizing is a long process!
I have amassed a ridiculous collection of hand-made soap because of a family member who got hooked on the hobby in about 2016... I am the only one who uses bar soap in my home. I'm still going through it!
Have moved 45+ times in my life. After packing & storing for decades I Finally have everything in One Location & have multiples of everything. Full China cabinet of first aid & bath supplies. A “time will tell” large bookcase, multiple totes & boxes of “memorabilia”.
Throw in “dementia dads” stuff (including cars, trucks, plane, boats) & new husbands stuff: “It’s crowded in here!”
Thanks for all your tip s & tricks! They REALLY ARE HELPING! Can’t wait for the day when I can get it all down to the basics. One box at a time… I WILL get there!
THANK YOU! YOU INSPIRE! BLESSINGS!!! 🤗❤️🤗❤️🤗
Dawn, you are amazing. I'm so glad that you take time to share. Because of what you have shared, my life is better because I'm putting into practice what you have taught me.
This means more than you know Donna, THANK YOU!!!!!
@@TheMinimalMom Oh yeah, my life is better, too! You were one of the first practical, relatable minimalists I found, and you've giving me so much inspiration!
I did a reset in my house recently and made memory boxes for each of my 4 adult children. I asked the one I see if she wanted hers; she didn't. So I labeled it and will store it. Three of my kids don't live nearby so I am unable to get in touch with them. Going to label theirs and store them also.
Husband just ordered a set of shelves and they will be here in a month. Going to do another reset after Christmas. Wish there CZcams when I was younger so I could have done this sooner. But you wouldn't have been here 😁
Thanks for all the motivation and love❤️
I've been here since your kids were that little! I'm so glad you are still helping us!
I love this! Especially the memory box idea. My mother-in-law gave us all of my husband's childhood stuff, mostly paper things from school. We went through it and pitched nearly everything! My mom gave me a small 'school days' book. That had pictures from every year along with some written stuff and Momentos. Honestly... I am not 100% sure where the thing is, but I have tucked it away somewhere. Probably in my memory box. We don't need to keep everything our kids have ever made/ did. This video just took away my guilt of having mostly digital photos and never getting around to creating all those photo books. There would be so many it would never fit into a memory box!
❤I get so much inspiration from your videos Dawn! A few months ago my son was having a terrible time tidying his room. I told him I would pick it up for him as long as I could put anything I noticed him not using anymore in a box for “time will tell”. He was so excited! He went and told his brother what a great deal he made with me😂
When I gave my daughter the memory box that I had created for her, she went through it, removed half of it, and said, “I think these are your memories Mom.” 🤣
That’s what my young adult kids have told me. 😢
Sammme!
My two teens say the same thing. I actually appreciate their perspective. Stuff is just stuff. It is the memories in my heart that I'll always keep. And, as cute as my kids were when they were little, I love them so much more today than I ever thought possible, and am looking forward to seeing all that they become. The adventure continues...: )
Great point. While Dawn was talking about the memory box, I thought about being a kid and how much I remembered that my parents didn't and visa versa, so I think what you're creating these boxes for kids, try to tuck away something you see they had a strong emotional connection with - they might want that stuff later instead of their first blanket or an outfit you thought was cute
I think that's okay. You can keep them in your memory box if you want to. We do have very special memories connected to our kids groving up.
I think another “plus” of the clear PLASTIC easy-to-grab-and-carry memory bin ties in to what you would grab during a fire, flood, or emergency evacuation situation. Beyond family, pets, and immediate needs, people always regret losing photos and specific memory items. Dawn, I would think that memory bin that you have would be somewhat protected from the elements, portable, and easily recognizable regarding contents. Just need to keep in a quick-access place.
My hubby and I reuse our cards for our birthdays and anniversary. My kids reuse Mother and Fathers Day cards. I love rereading all the messages!
That's a great idea. The collection of messages over time will make a wonderful memory box keepsake
Great video Dawn! I now use all 3 bins, and has helped me very much. I did a memory bin for both my husband and myself. Now I can drop things in his that he says he still wants, he will probably never remember them, but on the off chance he does I can tell him where it is 😊. I use a large cardboard box for time will tell and then to donate. Hubby knows where it is. In the beginning, I always offered for him to look in before I donated. He did the first few months, but now trusts my judgement and he rarely peeks back in
This is so awesome to hear Susan! Way to go!!!! ❤
The memory box reminds me of those time capsules people bury for people later. The message you want to convey.
when I put an item out of sight (something I’m not sure I want to part with) in a Time Will Tell Box, I enjoy the empty space or the freedom to use the space for something else. this leads me to part with the item sooner that I expected.
My son just turned 10 yesterday. The night before his birthday we went through his memory bin, and it was such a special moment. ❤ Highly recommend having one for each child!
That’s a great idea! I am going to try and remember to do that with my kids on birthdays now.
Yes bathroom Time Will Tell Bin!!!!! Genius, Dawn! So many unused products under the sink that I feel guilty parting with. The bin will really show me that I just didn't use them!
It's scary to think of a bathroom Time Will Tell bin -- I think I'm ready to try though! Thanks, Dawn.
Anything you don’t use at all, you can give to a shelter, to the troops, there are so many ways of giving that make items easier to part with too!
I love the memory bin, but I'm still an advocate for 3 boxes ... Baby, elementary and Jr. &Sr. High. My girls love everything in their baby boxes and they are full... I can't imagine throwing out something because my teen had to make a decision about a baby item and I present day item ... I totally agree with the container idea. I just know I have very sentimental girls ... They need more than one box.
When I moved out I had a few different boxes, as well. Organized, small and curated. But they were from different times in my life. I love to look through them still. 💗
That's a great idea!
I saved all the cards we received for our wedding. Every so often I resolve to throw them out, but then I open the box, read one and change my mind. 🤪
Get that bunt pan out of that tote Dawn! 😂 Lol
Oh my goodness!! Surely you didn't get rid of that bundt cake pan!!!
In my mind it will always be the quarantine bin. It helps me to think of them as 3 separate tools.
I love the timing of this! I frequently put on your videos in the background and play them while I am trying to adapt a more minimal lifestyle in our home. I am 29 weeks pregnant with our third and starting to enter that nesting phase. I have just purchased totes to start memory bins for my first two children. I’m sitting on the floor of my master bedroom with piles of stuff all around me in these two bins and I start your video and instantly laughed. This couldn’t have been more perfect. And it did really help me pay attention to the items I was putting in the bins. Thank you so much for sharing all the wisdom you’ve accumulated over the years! I enjoy watching you and your sister’s every week.
Liking this before it even gets started cause I KNOW it will be great. ❤
Dawn, you and your team have created such encouraging and relaxing videos. Whether I'm watching them or just listening in the background while getting things done, there is a peace and comfort that I feel while your videos are playing. As well as a kindling to a fire that gets relit in me to get things decluttered, organized, managed differently. Your videos have changed my life. I have decluttered so much and have more mental freedom and relief because of that. I pray God keeps blessing you and your family big. You are walking in purpose. Thank you for it. 💛
I love the “time will tell” basket. It’s given me a place to put all those random papers that aren’t file worthy, but you may need later. It’s amazing!
On my 60th birthday my Dad gave me my new baby and first birthday cards. It was lovely looking through them.
I used your Time Will Tell paper bin after first decluttering my house. I found the only thing in there that was worth keeping had to do with health insurance so I found a home for health insurance paperwork and got rid of the Time Will Tell bin. Your advice is golden!
I prefer so much the term “quarantine bin/box”. It saves my decluter life when you talked about that. I’m not inspired when the bin “time will tell” because if I open it, I’m done and I will keep everything. The quarantine, you suggested to us to never open it, just forget about it. Thank you for all of your videos Dawn 😊
Honestly, the comment you made several months ago about ‘mental inventory’ is the most accurate description of why decluttering (I call it dejunking) works! One of my favourite activities over the years has been major dejunking fests!
My grandma has a bin from her childhood. She still gets it out and looks at it to this day. 😊
Hi Dawn. I've been following your channel since 2019 and have decluttered my whole house with your help. I love your practical, super supportive videos. I hope you had a great 40th. I'll be 40 next week and am pretty excited to see what this new decade will bring. Sending love from Ontario, Canada!
This is so awesome and encouraging to read!!! I hope you have a wonderful birthday! The best is yet to come ❤❤❤
Super agree with putting things in a memory bin for your kids... I got a box of ornaments last year from my parents house & dreaded going thru it for so long... And then I wound up keeping maybe 1/4 of it. It would be a huge gift to get able to be handed a box full of goodies from growing up & not being overwhelmed with everything to go thru 🙂
I utilised the time will tell basket idea for my previous job. It turned into an empty photocopy box that I would empty all except the top inch of paperwork when it was full and worked brilliantly. My workmates couldn’t believe that I was being so ruthless but I didn’t put anything in there unless it was completed. Honestly, there was probably only a couple of times that I went into it and so easy as it was by default in date order anyway. Love your clips Dawn.
Trash and time will tell is all I've been using lately and it's made decluttering less messy and easy!!
I work from a small home and so does my husband. We have a 2 year old and a 6 month old. I am super overwhelmed by all the STUFF and am trying to use these videos as help and motivation. Thank you!
You got this!
With kids, less is more. Too many toys and they get overwhelmed. We have gotten rid of thousands in toys the kids never played with. It took taking everything out of the house over a year ago when we were having new carpet installed to realize this. When my 9 yr old literally had only 3 things to play with she was so content. When I brought all of the toys back inside, she became overwhelmed again. I have kept buying different ways to store their toys over the years and nothing seemed to work until I realized they just needed less. Still working on my 11 yr old son. He doesn’t let go as easy as his sister. He finally let go of some of his trains and tracks. He was happier when all he had was a couple of Thomas take and play trains. Then we got the huge train table with wooden tracks and trains. Then the electric trains. Then the magic tracks. He doesn’t play with any of them. One kid can only play with so many toys. And truthfully, they would still rather play with boxes and scraps of paper or outside in the dirt. Anyway, while yours are still little, remember sometimes less is more with kids. I’ve learned the hard way. I bet we’ve gotten rid of $10,000 in toys!
The quarantine/time-will-tell bin has been very helpful. Like you’ve said, after a while, you strengthen your decluttering muscles and most of it is easy to just donate/get rid of. 😊
Love being the first to like haha it’s like a game when you upload for me to like it as fast as I can 😂🎉
I don't even have a temporary bin anymore. Mail never hits the counter- it's bills or a magazine read ! My children are grown, so they now have their baby books and a couple of photo albums each, of them growing up." Time will tell bin" isn't a thing anymore either, it's either IN or OUT. Feels great.
You made my cleaning clothes out and giving them to thrift store so much easier and I didn't even know it until I did it!🎉
Thank you, Dawn!
WELL DONE!!!!🎉
Thank you, I can't wait to try this!
A few months ago I thought I had streamlined my bathroom perfectly. After your video I realized that 4, FOUR, of those bins I haven't even opened since that day and I don't remember what's in them. Your idea is perfect for me. I'm going to lose those bins of stuff?? NOW. Thanks
Always great Dawn
Always such a Help. 🙂
Awesome video Dawn!
Nice. Makes things easier. Thank you.
I love watching you minimalist videos! Thank you Dawn!
The Time Will Tell basket is life changing. I thought I had a good system for paper (I did) and did not need the TWTB. Then I looked at my home office and realized I was wrong. One good thing about the TWTB is that, if you need a certain piece of paper, it is easy to find.
Great video thank you.
Wow, this is so so helpful, thank you! Certainly going to test it out!

So true on the kid’s perspective on the memory box, Dawn! Thank you for sharing this content. My MIL made a memory box for each son (four) and each loved what they got. It wasn’t a box of EVERY MEMORY just some special ones for each son. The didn’t even remember some of the items or events. She saved the hospital receipt for the kids births too (like $15 each or something redic)
I love the bathroom Time will Tell Bin, I'm in desperate need for this one! Great Idea and I Will Be Doing this one for sure. Thanks Dawn you are a GENIUS!
