The zooms in Barry Lyndon speak volumes!!!! They are literally laying out the picture and showing the beautiful and PERFECT blocking!!! Recreating many of the artworks that motivated Kubrick! Omg….the zoom where Barry is found in the garden cheating is just purely perfection and hits like a hammer on a 6 inch nail!

As a budding, teenage cinephile I became a Kubrick fanboy having only seen Dr. Strangelove, 2001, and Spartacus, either only on TV or in second run movie theaters. Seeing Barry Lyndon during it's opening run in December 1975, at the tender age of 19, still stands out as an amazing moment in my life. Hopefully, we can look forward to a 50th Anniversary 4K from Criterion next year.

I have the UK 4K of Double Indemnity on pre-order and really looking forward to watching it.
Not being region free is extremely limiting as far as Criterion releases are concerned. Fortunately, with a bit of digging, it’s possible to find the same masters on discs from various U.K. labels here (eg, Mike Leigh films). Heck, they’re often better encoded than some of Criterion’s low bit rate encodes.
At the end of the day, I buy to watch great films in good quality, and although I do appreciate Criterion releases, I’m not a collector but a film lover. The label is kind of irrelevant to me but I do appreciate a nice package with interesting interviews and documentaries as well as well written essays.
