    Absolutely use a dedicated wifi router or hard-wire for events. I used this for an event with 6 presenters and about 300 attendees. Everything worked perfectly until the doors opened, then once everyone came in I was completely unable to connect to the mixer. One mic chanel was open, so I ended up having to swap cables for each presenter. Thankfully the client never knew what happened, and I was able to manipulate the levels with the controls on my Shire UHF-R receivers. The event went off without a hitch due to careful setup before everyone came in, but I was unable to control the mixer until everyone left the room again. Now I will not use it professionally again without having it hard wired and the internal wifi switched off.

      I'd rather have to use a really long ethernet cable and connect that to my laptop rather than rely on dodgy internal wifi

      @@AlcaHolicGamer Had 15 channels set ready for church service for Christmas Eve and 10 minutes before the start of the service the ipad and the mixer quit communicating. had to scramble to connect Y and Tri cables to the microphones and shove everything through the 4 inputs to the old (but not disconnected) house amp that is 24 years old. No sound check. Just flying by the seat of the pants and adjusting as the service moved along. Wireless never again. Laptop over Ethernet cable only from now on. After the service and everyone left, the ipad and the mixer would connect again.

    • @computerjantje
      @computerjantje Před 4 lety

      Good job Andin. Deal with the problem so nobody else notices it. That is the spirit. As a sound engineer of live events for 20 years, I had my share of these. The motto always remains: do not do it wireless if you can do it with a wire. If you have to do it wireless, be sure to have plenty of backup possibilities. Today sound setups are almost always with the "mixer" on stage and the "remote control" in your front of house arrea. I ALWAYS run an Ethernet cable. Never count on WiFi in crowded places. You learned the hard way as I did also :)

    The biggest reason to use a stand-alone router is that the XR18 does not automatically change channels. So if someone is on the Behringer channel you set up (as the wifi network host) it is a pain to change. Reason being, once you set it up you can forget how to change the dedicated channel since you (preferably) do it as a set-and-forget, not to mention you need to use the unit without interruption. The external router changes channels when it detects interference.

    Good run through of the XAir, Drew.
    I've been using this unit for nearly two years and always speak very highly of it. I have installed the XAir into several churches and they all simply love it as well.
    Even when am on the road doing events guest engineers find it very easy to navigate and produce flawless shows.
    I look forward to your upcoming videos on the XAir.
    PS ... True I have always ran mine with an external router and have never had a problem even in very high demand areas like at concerts with hundreds of cell phones looking for a connection.

    Thanks Drew - I've owned the XR18 for a couple of years now and it has a bit of a learning curve; I very much look forward to your other tutorials on the subject. By the way, I purchased your XR18 presets and they work very well. Currently I am running somewhat of a complex setup (at least to me), with both Ableton Live and the XAir Control app running on my MacBook Air. I use Ableton for backing tracks, which I bring into the XR18 through six USB channels, together with several microphones and live instruments that run directly into the XR18. The XR18 is incredibly versatile in this respect. Anyway, things are working pretty well, although sometimes accounting for USB inputs on the one hand and the instrument and mic inputs on the other is tricky for me. Thanks again for posting; it is very helpful. David

      David Judson - Trying to determine if the X-Air effects library works with a Mac. Based on the comment above regarding a MacBook Air I assume the answer is yes. Is this correct? I don't want to drop $67 only to learn there is a compatibility problem with my mid-2014 MacBook Pro Retina 15".
      Thanks in advance!

    • @davidjudson6710
      @davidjudson6710 Před 7 lety +1

      Yes, the Effects library has worked well in my setup. I've used the Female Vocalist, Acoustic Guitar, and perhaps one or two others. There was a noticeable improvement to the FOH sound with Drew's EQ settings. There have been no compatibility issues at all. XR18 is very stable in my setup, although I note I use the hardwired Ethernet connection instead of the WiFi.

    year its 17 inputs those TRS sockets channels 17/18 can't be split from a single stereo channel. The X-edit software sees the 17/18 on the XR18 the same way as the tape deck return on the X18. You also can't split the gain and channel strip processing (EQ, Gate & Compressor) on 17/18.

    Thank you for answering clearly the question of not being able to use it as a stage box! PTL! That’s exactly what I needed to know! However for anyone looking to use it as I am, I have found a solution. I think. We’ll see. I wanted to use this for a mediator between the inputs and somehow build an in ear rig in a roadcase rack on stage that lets musicians mix their in ears on the ios app (saving money not having to get P16’s) and instead using the XLR outs and the behringer P1 personal headphone amps (saving money not having to buy thousands of dollars worth of wireless IEM’s) ALL of that while still giving FOH a direct line somehow from the instruments and vocals to mix at FOH unaffected by and changes made in the XAir. Something like the X32 rack WOULD be great (since this does not work as a stage box) but the X32 is just too much for what I need as far as what it offers and a little pricey. SO.... I found a perfect solution... I think, ha. I plan to run all 12 of the instrument/mic inputs into two small rack units I found called “ART S8’s” which take the inputs and split the signal of each into two clean outputs(female XLR ports) and it does this without losing any gain or quality. I then plan to run the first of 2 outputs (coming from the S8 splitter) out of the S8 and directly to FOH using either an XLR snake or digital snake whichever the venue has. Now... The 2nd output from the S8 for each channel will then go directly into the XR18 racked directly below it. If all works as I hope, I would then (in theory) use the behringer P1’s connected to the Aux outs on the XR18 via XLR cables to give each band member a dedicated 1/8th inch in ear plug in with a volume knob/belt clip. And again “in theory” they couldd then each go into their dedicated aux out mix on the XAir app, and mix their own personal monitor mix how they would like, being able to EQ how they would like, make changes on the fly using their phones or iPads etc. I would be able to multitrack into logic from the USB (added bonus), and do so all while not tampering with or interfering with the direct, pure, straight signal going to FOH from each input on stage using a snake.
    Please tell me if this idea is total trash and my creative mind has completely screwed this up 😂

    • @joshzhu
      @joshzhu Před 5 lety

      The approach you described would work, though depending on your budget, what the venue has/who is mixing your sound, it may be better to go for a different solution.
      An X32 rack -->AES50 cat5e--> X32(or midas) FOH desk would allow you to all of this, except having the option to seperate the gains of your monitor and FOH inputs, but with less cables. If you have the same sound engineer, who perhaps has their own x32 then it may be easier & slightly cheaper to go this route instead.

    At the start of the video, it's like....'woah, that is crisp audio!' - 'oh yeah, it's an audio channel, d'oh!'
    Sounds lovely.
    The Hi-Z offer no value to us, and we're an acoustic band. Funny it is stated time and again that it's for acoustic instruments. I feel that I haven't yet met the people who would dream of going into the mixer directly as an acoustic guitar while simultaneously playing in a band that needs 16 inputs.
    What do you do, have all your wonderful toys back at the mixer's effect loop, fiddling pre/post into the chain for every single pedal? I mean, sure, it COULD be done. Play without anything, no comp, no sparkly, no delay? Can't go without reverb, so again: Feed it into the loop? Use the mixer's effects? All of these sound like insanity.
    At the same time, any pedal board and any multiFX worth its salt ever, in fact any player worth its salt ever outputs the end product as balanced XLR. Why go through all the hassle then to solve a problem that doesn't exist?
    Somehow it seems a solution to a problem that has been solved individually by the guitar player years before he'll ever use an 18 input mixer to play live.
    Ah well, must be for the studio folk and their plugins or something. Shrug.

    I have a question. When on the bus/FX send fader page on the android app for each channel I have my bus routing set for pre EQ and FX set post fader. When scrolling through the channels using the left right arrows at the top of the page you eventually get to the last channel then it shows the same page with faders for all six busses and 4 FX sends but in the upper left corner it says return 1 then you can advance through the next three pages and they respectively say return 2, 3 & 4. My question is should I set the routing point for those to the same as I set my channels. PreEQ on 1-6 and Post fader on FX 1-4. This is really the only thing I've encountered in setup that I'm having trouble wrapping my head around. Thanks.

That said, the wifi from behringer is not that reliable so use an external multiband wifi anyway. Or better, in case of real live and crowd coming in, keep it ethernet wired. When you say Stage Box is a stage box something that is on stage with all mice plugged that provides a separate mix for monitora/in ears and then can send a fixable signal to FOH?

    Hi, Drew. Do you know if the xtouch compact can be mapped to the xair mixers, and how? Thanks!

    Do you need internet access to run your own router with the ethernet cable? TIA

    For Drew or anyone who may know, he mentions using Waves Multirack to use external VST effects. Do you have to use one of those "live specific" programs that cost an extra $150+ or would the DAW I already have installed work the same way with the VST plug ins. Would I run into latency issues or anything like that?

    • @zavasolutions
      @zavasolutions Před 7 lety

      Hey man! I believe there is a way to do this in Logic Pro X. However it can produce some latency because of your computers DSP power. Feel free to send us an email at support@zavasound.com so we can figure this out together! Or by going to our website at, zavasound.com, and clicking, "Support." We hope to hear from you soon!

      Waves Rack is its own, stand-alone shell program that runs Waves pugins in "live," low-latency mode. Trying to run Waves plugins for a live setting in a VST host like Reaper, etc, will introduce latency issues that could become a huge problem for your sound. The audio from the live mixer will reach the speakers well before the audio from the DAW, and, depending on the effects you're trying to use, this can cause problems like phase-cancellation, comb filtering, or, if the latency is really bad, echoing.

    Great video! Just bought the x18 and love it! I want to put the bass guitar and electronic drum kit through the x18 for live performances. Do I need to use DI boxes?

    • @computerjantje
      @computerjantje Před 4 lety

      Always good to keep DI boxes around. When in doubt just put one in between to prevent your mixer damagaes by faulty equipment of others. Especially electric quitar musicians have sometimes a lot of extra equipment all wallpower feeded and sometimes strangly stacked.

    Unfortunately mine no longer sends external sound and NO ONE works on Behringer because they say Behringer doesn’t provide parts. So I do NOT recommend these mixers

      dprinceuknow you can’t. This is what he addresses when he says “you can’t use this as a stage box for the X32” they are different systems.
