Diesel Generator First And Last Start

  • As many know, Direct Energy, and others electricity retailers in Alberta are absolute criminals. As if our rates aren't already the most expensive in Canada, they add an apx $80 monthly "distribution charge" to the bill every month. Since we now own two homes, we cut the bills down by shutting off the electricity at the "cottage". We have been running the cottage off 12v car batteries, and the little 1000w generator.
The 1000w genny has been really efficient. I can't get over that it runs for 8 hours on $4 of gas. Wile running it is working to power all the lights in the house and battery chargers for the car battery lights. Video of them to come, no I don't have headlights duck taped to the walls. There is an old vid of the generator here
    • Generator Fail
I really bought that generator for work, so I almost need to replace it with something. I have always wanted one of those 10hp diesel motors they sell at Princess Auto. They cost about $800, but go on sale for $500, and I keep thinking I will buy one to power my tank track garden tractor, as seen here
    • Lawn Tractor Skid Stee...
So when Princess Auto put the diesel generator on sale, powered by my beloved diesel engine all for $800, there was no losing. I have a new generator and my much wanted air cooled diesel! I could make the tank track garden tractor a "diesel electric" like the 400 ton heavy haulers, and trains. In the summer when my tank track diesel electric snow plow (thats a mouth full) isn't needed, I pop the generator off for work.
Wow was I wrong. Maybe I got the one bad unit, but it didn't work right. Besides the somewhat expected ridiculously hard to start in the cold. I had to recharge the starter battery so many times I didn't turn the camera on for the time it actually started. But I did get some of the madness on film. It makes me sad editing this video together, I really wanted this generator. Put I am really happy I got it from Princess Auto, because I know they will take it back with no problem, unlike like Canadian Tire, and a lot of other retail bee-otches out there.

Just a little advice for the future. If you have a runaway small diesel engine like this pull the decompression lever and hold it. It will slow to a stop. A diesel engine uses very high compression to ignite the air/fuel mixture to run and unlike a gas engine witch uses a spark plug to ignite the mixture and will run with the valve open and burn up the valves. The only reason diesel engines have a decompression valve is for the engine to gain enough momentum in the flywheel to get it started with out breaking your back or burning up the starter motor. Remove compression and it will not run.

Realises that all is not well because it's spitting flames out the exhaust but continues to watch it run until it dies in a cloud of smoke. That really doesn't seem very smart to me. It would have been far better to stop it and check that everything was as it should be, then try again, if it was no better that's when you return it to the place you bought it, while it still runs ! I'm no diesel expert, but it looks like its overfueling at idle. I have operated loads of air cooled diesels, and own 2 of them as my own generators. none of them would make the muffler overly hot at no-load idle. the only time things get hot is when the alternator is loaded down, and they still do not shoot flames out the exhaust like that.
It looks like its pouring fuel into the cyl. revving as hard as it can and just flame-grilling the muffler. probably an injection/governing issue.

@@jackbird8343 never heard a lawnmower ping and knock under load? That there is pre-ignition but really compression ignition. A diesel engine is purely compression ignition. They will run on petrol with some hesitation. Same as diesel in a petrol engine, when they get hot they can run on diesel. Only way i know this is because i accidentally put diesel in my lawnmower. The diesel can and petrol can are identical. Only reason it started was cos it was hot. I knew straight away it was diesel because of the smoke cloud when it started. Following day i went to start it. No chooch. Had to pre-heat it with wd40 down the intake for a few minutes and it ran the rest of the diesel through itself in about 30 minutes. Fresh tank of petrol and it runs perfectly again now. The whole time it was on diesel there was constant varying blue black and white smoke depending on load on the engine an if i revved it. Probably gave myself all kinds of cancer and killed all the mosquitoes for miles around but the grass was cut

+_Husky ok just to start because everything you said is wrong. I'm a diesel mechanic in training at a local union so don't say you do the know shit trust me I know. first the reason it stalled is because the full pump gave out diesel pumps are lubricated by the diesel running through them gas on the other hand is lubricated through separate means other than by the fual. so that's why his truck stalled it had no fual. and octane has no change in anything to do with diesels they don't care. any fual will combust under high compression for the most part. and I hope you know that diesel engines 1 get hoter and 2 have shit tone more compression making your last statement very missleading.

Whow, a *diesel* small engine? That's quite interesting. I have 2 engines that are extremely small and *act* like 2-stroke diesels (well, of course they are 2-stroke -- and even 2-stroke diesels are weird to me), but which run on some other kind of material than actual diesel fuel, I think.
Even weirder, though, is how *HOT* that exhaust pipe got, so much so that it was glowing and spitting out sparks! Crazy!

Yeah, *****, I *know* diesel engines run on diesel fuel, haha. That's why they're *called* diesels. And yeah, all petroleum fuels are oil--some thinner than others--even though they're typically not all called "oil."
I just think it's interesting to see an engine that's the size of a typical lawnmower engine running on diesel (even though, like I said, my model-airplane engines act like diesels but don't run on that kind of fuel).

When a diesel engine begins to suck oil into the combustion chamber past the rings or through a failed seal, the diesel engine compresses then fires that oil. since there is no control over the feeding of that oil which has now become the fuel, the only way to slow or stop a runaway engine like this is to choke the air going in with something that will stop the airflow into the engine.

  • @davida1hiwaaynet
    @davida1hiwaaynet Před 12 lety +2

There are a few things that can cause hi exhaust temp. Most common is restricted airflow on the inlet. Diesels pump extra air that is not combusted (because it is a lean condition at most all times). This cools the combustion and exhaust temps.
Other cause is late injection timing. It will cause low power, high exhaust temps, and often smoke.
Another possibility is compression release not kicking out completely. This will cause high exh temp and burned exhaust valve quickly!

  • @SantaClaw
    @SantaClaw Před 10 lety +38

Ok, 1, This is most definitively a diesel generator anyone can see it in big red lettering on the side.
    2. The Add Oil before starting label, is NOT the same as the one that says Add Fuel on the fuel filler cap. The yellow Add Oil label is at the Oil Filler Cap/Port seen just to the left of the right tire about 2 seconds into the video.
    3. The issue seems to be lack of oil, we don't see how long it's run before it started spewing flames. But what we see WILL happen without oil, it's not just providing lubrication, but also cooling making it double bad.
Although It's a little strange that a diesel generator of that size doesn't have a oil guard switch preventing it from starting if there's no oil pressure.
All generators are delivered to the stores with NO oil in them so they don't spill during shipping. It's normally a requirement by the manufacturers that the stores put oil in them before they are sold, to prevent what we see from happening.
It's not unreasonable for a customer to assume that it's ready to use, and that the store's put oil in it before selling it to customers.
    4. Although the lack of oil seems to be the most likely cause, there are a few other issues that can cause what we see.
    1. The Governor in the fuel pump could be faulty, basically not limiting the RPM to the correct level making it run amok, producing a list of issues to large to post here..
    2. The timing may be off, making it run a lot hotter than it should.
    3. Gasoline in the fuel tank would make it hard to start, however it WOULD start, especially with a brand new engine with high compression. This would also explain why there is very little smoke to be seen both when trying to start, and while it's running as burning gasoline at such high pressures causes very little smoke.
If you use gasoline in a diesel engine, the gasoline will release much more energy than diesel fuel would, causing enormous pressures, and therefore way to high temperatures inside the engine.
When you increase the timing, or compression too much in a gasoline engine, the gasoline will start detonating/pinging in stead of combusting. A normal gasoline engine has a flame front, or combustion speed of about 16.5 meters per second.
A "detonation" occurs when high pressures/temperatures (the high temperatures often caused by to much advance in the timing) causes the gasoline to burn to fast, releasing to much energy over to short of a time.
A high performance petrol engine will typically have a absolute maximum compression ratio of about 12 or 13 to 1. A diesel engine can have a compression ratio of more than 22 to 1.
A working petrol\gasoline engine has a relatively "slow" combustion speed releasing the energy in the fuel over a "long time" giving the engine time to push the piston away, release pressure and dissipate heat. If it combusts to fast, because of timing or compression, the combustion process will happen exponentially faster as the temperature/pressure rises, The piston doesn't have time to move before the peak of combustion occurs and virtually "all" the energy is released at the same time creating INSANE pressures and temperatures.
What sets the timing in a diesel is at what point the diesel is injected into the engine, the earlier it is injected, the more time it has to burn and build pressure before the piston starts moving down again releasing heat and pressure, higher temperatures and pressures speeds up the combustion causing more energy to be released faster.
Since diesel burns slower than gasoline, injecting gasoline with the same timing as diesel can be devastating, as once it ignites, and Yes, it takes higher temperatures and more pressure for it to ignite, that's true BUT , it will burn so much faster than diesel reaching pinging velocities/pressures/temperature "immediately", releasing much more energy, both in the form of pressure and temperature then the engine can stand, causing parts such as the pistons and valves to melt, or causing parts like the con rods, crank, pistons, head to fail.
Also, the octane level dictates at what temperature\pressure gasoline will ignite, the higher the octane level, the more it takes for it to light. Low octane gas would be worse than using high octane, as the low octane gas would ignite sooner than the high octane gas, releasing even more energy.
I would have expected to see little gray puffs of smoke while he was cranking it on the starter if there was diesel in it. However I don't think it was bleed properly before he started cranking, and that's why we saw no smoke..
Feel free to ask if there is something you don't understand or disagree with.

Dude, you don't know anything about small engines. If it didn't have any oil in it you would have known. The connecting rod would be stickin out the crank case. And there is no governor for the fuel pump. Thats the stupidest thing I have ever heard. There probably isn't even a fuel pump on the thing. Gravity can do it. And If you mess with the timing on a gas engine(if your talking about the cam/crank shaft timing), it won't start at all. And a diesel engine is made stronger than a gas engine. That is why you find them in big trucks and semis. So it won't melt the valves or piston. So stop making 75+ line comments about something you don't even know about. Everything in your comment was just wrong.

Ya but the engine did sound like it might have been over revving. That plus no oil will make it blow up before seizing. But still if it didn't have oil in it it wouldn't have run that long with causing damage. On the fuel pimp part. Once it gets to the carb it would be free flowing. The point of the fuel pump is to get fuel from the tank to the carb. Since diesels have more compression wouldn't it suck the air/fuel mix into the engine at high pressure. And there should be a throttle body in any internal combustion engine. If not it would over rev and blow. I have found an engine not running and found out the teeth were off by if I remember right around three teeth. It wouldn't even pop. (gas engine, but your right that a diesel will run when off by a few teeth, just crappy.)In a small engine like this, there shouldn't be a belt. it should be teeth.

It usually happens when the engine is worn, but if this is a brand new engine, then my only guess is that you put too much or not enough oil in it, causing it to runaway. In future, if an engine starts doing this, cover the air intake with a rag or something, that will stop it.

It was running at the governed speed which for long periods of time which shortens the engine's lifespan, and it would have been a good idea to check oil and fuel levels before starting it. And you were breaking your back by hand starting it. For the next engine try to let it sit overnight near a radiator inside your house so components will be warm and it will start easier and once it has started, let it run without load at 1500 rpm or so for some five or ten minutes before generating energy. The warmer the engine before getting started, the less wear during the first moments of operation.

I've seen diesels running on petrol (gasoline) and it does ignite quite easily with just compression and heat - but it's usually hard for a petrol engine to burn diesel because they don't have the required compression etc. it's easier to ignite petrol than diesel. alternativefuels.about.com/od/dieselbiodieselvehicles/a/gasolinindiesel.htm

have you actually tried it? Out of the 3 vehicles I've seen it happen on (2 landcrusers and a toyota ute) they all started straight away and ran (although rough), one of the vehicles was driven for 12Kms and didn't sustain any permanent damage by some miracle (cat prob wasn't happy). note 2 of the engines were old school with a mechanical pump and the ute was efi (guessin it went into limp mode). I don't understand why you think a more volatile fuel like petrol requires more heat (and compression) than diesel for ignition. it's the other way around. also there is a good reason they don't use petrol in a compression engine - because under these conditions the burn and ignition characteristics of petrol are unfavorable leading to unpredictable ignition timing hence knocking etc.. (it's engineered to be used in a combustion engine with a controlled ignition source ). here is a table of fuel flash points - note petrol is at -45oF and diesel is at 100oF www.engineeringtoolbox.com/flash-point-fuels-d_937.html. so back to my original point petrol requires less effort than diesel to ignite - not more, what you say is true if you wanted to run heaver fuels in a diesel engine - in which case you'd prob require preheating to make it viscous enough to get it thru the fuel system (like what the do with fuel oils/ bunker fuel). Also It is possible to run diesel in some petrol engines - though it isn't good for the motor. since we are on youtube have a look as there are examples of both on here.

You know you need to bleed the injector, not hard to do, you just need a spanner and push down the decomp while cranking until you see the fuel squirting out around the injector. I had a workmate flatten a battery to start a similar diesel engine on a block splitter at work, my boss got me onto it and i got it running within a few minutes. In regards to the failure on your generator, it appears the injector pump must have stuck wide open, could have saved it by cracking the injector or pushing down the decompressor.

A diesel will run on gasoline. The lower the octane the better. Some 60 octane aviation gas for the old radial engines will run a diesel. I don't know what was wrong with this diesel but it should not light the muffler up. That's insane. It's almost like the fuel had nitro mixed in which will cause diesel to explode violently. This had to be some kind of setup. There is nothing that could make diesel burn like that unless it was added.

3 Cents McKenna No, gasoline doesn’t need a spark to ignite. Gasoline engines use a spark to ignite the fuel/air mixture at a lower compression. Diesel engines have such high compression they don’t need a spark. Even a gasoline engine can run with the ignition off under the right conditions, they call it “dieseling”.

i have the same problem on my generator and i think the timing of fuel injection is abit slow this means unburned diesel escape into the silencer and this added whit the extra gases during the exaust is an blowtortch but my problem i diss mounted the whole engine and reassamble it whit the point markings on cam balance and crank shafts but still the same result for me hmmm is the timing points wrong all the way from the factory ? onley thing for me is to move the cam one gear to advance it

It probably came with a Manual, to tell you to put some fucking oil in it. And maybe gasoline is not the right right choise for a Diesel engine... this is beyond stupidity
