    I've been a stamp collector for 44 years and never got into perfins but now I'll consider adding a few to my collection. One of the nice things about this hobby is that there is always a new area to explore. Your videos are so well done. You make an excellent spokesman for philately and I only wish you had been around when I first started collecting stamps way back in 1977. Please keep these videos coming. You have so much knowledge and have demonstrated a great enthusiasm for this great hobby. I always thought perfins were only used in the U.S.A. so was surprised to learn that almost all countries used them.

    I started my first US stamp collection in 1967 when I was 5. Both of my brothers, my dad, and my grand-dad all collected and specialized in US stamps. My dad had bundles of 100 used copies most common stamps starting in the 1930's into the 1960's. One of my earliest favorites was the 1932 presidentials. By age 10 my collection was LOADED with perfins, and as explained here people told me they were technically considered damaged. But I was attracted to them and actually hoarded them easily convincing others they were highly undersierable. It wasn't for potential cash value, it was striktly for the enthralment and proliferation of them in my sphere. Sadly my collection was stolen in the 1980's while I was moving and while I did return to collecting about 15 years later, as an adult, my 2000's collection consisted mainly of early used singles, including 10 sets of 1892 Columbians complete to .50c and some of the $$ values, with one set to .50c unused. Then I focussed on mint and unused NG and regummed singles starting with the 1920's Washingtons. Then by the 1932 Washington series it was all plate blocks. Including, not counting airmails, an abolute complete collection of plate blocks from 1932- 2000. [sc702 through sc3450-ish] Naturally I had a ton of air-mails, other B.O.B. stuff, and many early mint coil line pairs, but none of these were as complete . Sold everyting as the market started to dip. Now I just have a few old coins.... Imagine I probably had a few thousand perfins from 1920's to 1930's.

    The Perfins Club has all the back numbers of their magazine online. I am learning a lot from reading the old articles. Brilliant topic. So overshadowed and undervalued. I think of stamps as miniature encyclopaedic slivers of history, geography and culture and Perfins add another deeper level to that world. I first noticed them in abundance on German post WWI era stamps, obviously the value of reselling a stamp was tempting in a recession. Thanks Graham, tick VG.

    As suggested by the comments thus far, perfins are an unfamiliar area of philately to newcomers -- myself included -- but this video succeeds in turning an obscure feature of stamps into an exciting dimension of the hobby. Coincidentally, a visit to a flea market a few days ago prompted a fellow collector to mention perfins to me as a feature to be on the lookout for, so this video is exceedingly timely.

    Wow, in 37 years of collecting, I had no clue what perfins were (I've seen the term, of course, just never knew the meaning). I thought those holes were cancellations from postal administrations, used as a way to save a little ink. And, to be honest, I kind of hated them for "damaging" stamps. But now that I know the story I'll have to gather some up for a later study (I know I have some). THANK YOU, GRAHAM!!!

    Another great video Graham! A couple of minor points - 'OS' overprinted and punctured on stamps from the states of Australia (such as New South Wales) stood for 'On Service', as in 'On His/Her Majesty's Service' - i.e. OHMS without the HM. Also the 'inverted' perfins such as those created using the folded sheets you show (that can be read correctly from the back) are actually reversed perfins. Inverted are 'upside down' perfins and can also be found inverted reversed.

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  Před 4 lety +2

      Very good points, thank you for bringing this up. I clearly confused the words inverted and reversed there, and I did not know that the 'O' was simply 'On' for the Australian states. I'll add these details to the video description :) Thanks for watching.

    I loved this video!! Im now a new stamp geek that is really having fun with perfin stamps. Looking up the initials, the company, old pictures of it, and where are they now. It's been fun. I feel it's more fun, rare, and more exiting than same old non perfins stamps that had millions made of the same. Where a perfin stamp may only have hundreds. Anyhow, thanks tons.
    I'm thinking maybe a video of Grills, history of them, how to identify them. Maybe little more in depth on watermarks, paper differences used, presses used, ( flat, rotary) colors used, or whatever. And a video that would be cool, would be one bout the major difference between a "rare stamp" and a "freak stamp". I have a few that that are called freaks that drives me nutz. I feel it's totally as rare as a stamp with a sideways watermark that they call rare and worth thousands. However in the conversion year in the u.s. from large stamps to small stamps, there were a few small print on a large stamp, and perf I'm and just considered a worthless freak?!? I don't understand

    As always I enjoyed watching your video on perfins. Without knowing too much about them, I have set a separate place for them in my collection. You helped me know a lot more about them. Incidentally, I was working for Burroughs at the time of the merger in 1986. We were building large mainframe computers at the time. We merged with the Sperry Company, which I believe, was from Connecticut. For a time, we used the name Sperry - Burroughs to identify our company. It was said that we needed to come up with a permanent name for the company,so management came up with a company wide contest, among the employees to come up with a new name. Someone in the Atlanta office came up with the name “Unisys” to stand for,” United Information Systems “; and that is the name that is used to this day.

    I have perfins which I separate into a serparate envelope though I don't particularly collect them. The perfins I do like however are the official stamps that have the word "Official or oficial" in perfins.

    Great video on the topic. I inherited a trunk loaded with matchboxes full of stamps with so many perfin from Europe that has me wondering how to distinguish their origin. It's a niche community I've come to learn, but very interesting.

    Note that often companies would perfin the higher denominations, especially 19th century GB, these are usually worth considerably less. I like them for variety, especially those that are more graphic than basic letters - like that B in a star

    When the perforator operator was folding the sheet to do the job quicker they were not lazy. They were being efficient. Some of these companies had very large daily mailings.

    Afyer 50+ years and 3 collections later, I first read about perfins just last year (2019), but cannot recall the source. That same source claimed that used stamps without a cancellation but containing a city & state printed on them in various fonts, sometimes with precancel bars are also perfins. Perfins are specialized by organization; could it be that these city/state critters are postal perfins, prmulgated by the USPS to reduce theft by its counterpersons?
