When Genesis started to do more pop songs they really never gave up on the musicianship and progresiveness of their early work. The bridge in the central part is so thrilling and masterful and shows how great composers and arrangers they are..

Guys, I'm like 45 now. That being said, the first album (vinyl), was Invisible Touch. Also, I'm an Aussie, so my dear Mum took me to see Phil Collins when I was 12. That was an awesome experience! I yelled out at the top of my lungs," onya Phil!" And lovely man that he is, called back," thank you very much up there!". So I was so stoked for that interaction! Anyway, I'm a metal guitarist, but Genesis freaking rock!😁

Phil knows how to make something catchy which is cool but his ideas are basically so simple that everyone can get them which isn't bad but danny manages to make something complex available to everyone he opened up a whole universe of possibilities.

    Lyrics
I'm coming down, coming down like a monkey, but it's alright
Like a load on your back that you can't see, ooh but it's alright
Try to shake it loose, cut it free, just let it go, get it away from me.
Cos tonight, tonight, tonight - oh, I'm gonna make it right
    Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh.
I'm going down, going down, like a monkey, ooh but it's alright
Try to pick yourself up, carry that weight that you can't see,
    Don't you know it's alright
It's like a helter skelter, going down and down, round and round
But just get it away from me - oh.
Because tonight, tonight, tonight - oh
    We're gonna make it right
    Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh.
I got some money in my pocket, about ready to burn
I don't remember where I got it, I gotta get it to you
So please answer the phone, cos I keep calling, but you're never home
    What am I gonna do
    Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh
    I'm gonna make it right
    Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh.
You keep telling me I've got everything, you say I've got everything I want
You keep telling me you're gonna help me, you're gonna help me, but you don't
But now I'm in too deep
You see it's got me so that I just can't sleep
Oh get me out of here, please get me out of here
Just help me I'll do anything, anything
If you'll just help me get out of here.
I'm coming down, coming down like a monkey, ooh but it's alright
It's like a load on your back that you can't see,
Ooh don't you know that it's alright
Just try to shake it loose, cut it free, let it go
But just get it away from me
Cos tonight, tonight, tonight - oh
    Maybe we'll make it right
    Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh.
Please get me out of here
Someone get me out of here
Just help me I'll do anything, anything
If you'll just help get me out of here
Tonight - oh, I'm gonna make it right
    Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh.

“Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.”

    This song is superb.
From the dark and ominous drum machine, synth sequence by Banks, Collins electro drums and Rutherfords electric guitar intro, and Collins exceptional vocals; Tonight, Tonight, Tonight is a remarkable track.
Tony and Mike provide the most atmospheric, edge of the seat bridge, and then Collins vocals explode. Collins once said in an interview that the song is a story about a man on the edge, looking to score, but torn between addiction and wanting to go cold turkey. Rutherford's guitar solo in the outro is true perfection.

British acts like Genesis and Dire Straits were already quite old fashioned compared to them.

Try to pick yourself up, carry that weight that you can't see
    Don't you know it's alright
It's like a helter skelter, going down and down, 'round and 'round
But just get it away from me, ohh-ohh-woh
    Because tonight, tonight, tonight ohh-ohh
    We're gonna make it right
    Tonight, tonight, tonight ohh-ohh
I got some money in my pocket
    About ready to burn
    I don't remember where I got it
I gotta get it to you
    So please answer the phone
    'Cause I keep calling
    But you're never home
    What am I gonna do
    Tonight, tonight, tonight ohh-ohh
    I'm gonna make it right
    Tonight, tonight, tonight ohh-ohh
Well you keep telling me I've got everything
You say I've got everything I want
And you keep telling me you're gonna help me
    You're gonna help me
    But you don't
But now I'm in too deep
You see it's got me so that I just can't sleep
Ooh get me out of here
Please get me out of here
Just help me I'll do anything
    Anything
Ooh if you'll just help me get out of here
I'm coming down, coming down like a monkey
    Ooh but it's alright
It's like a load on your back that you can't see
Ooh don't you know that it's alright
Just try to shake it loose, cut it free, let it go
But just get it away from me, ohh-ohh-woh
    'Cause tonight, tonight, tonight ohh-ohh
Ooh we're gonna make it right
    Tonight, tonight, tonight, ohh-ohh
Please get me out of here
Just someone get me out of here
Just help me I'll do anything
    Ooh anything
If you'll just help get me out of here!
    Tonight, ohh-ohh
    I'm gonna make it right
    Tonight, tonight, tonight, ohh-ohh
    Because tonight, tonight, tonight ohh-ohh
Yes I'm gonna make it right
    Tonight, tonight, tonight, ohh-ohh
    (Tonight, tonight, tonight ohh-ohh)
    (Tonight, tonight, tonight ohh-ohh)
    (Tonight, tonight, tonight ohh-ohh)
    (Tonight, tonight, tonight ohh-ohh)

I like to imagine that this is the song that describes Rael, the half-Puerto Rican street punk protagonist of the 1974 album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, one decade later as he journeys through the 1980's Manhattan scene, hooked on heroin and living in a drug house.

A couple of people have pointed out the Blade Runner look - well, that's very much due to the fact that the video was actually filmed in the real Bradbury Hotel (as in the film) where J.F. Sebastian had his pad and the encounter between Rutger and Harrison takes place (they really played on this in the video - note all the mannequins)
