  • DIY double thickness pallet wood Dog Kennel. In this video I go over the steps in making a warm double thickness Dog House, made from pallet palings and stringers.
    The doorway is offset to one side, to allow for curling up around the corner and out of the weather. The skillion roof is perfect for placing up against the side of the house. The pallet palings are double thickness to create a thicker barrier from the elements as well as closing in any air gaps.

    Tools are definitely an investment. We went ahead and bought a lot of tools when we were putting our deck up. At anti time, I didn't want to, but we both knew that with time we would use them for future projects. Looking back I glad that we got them when we had the extra money.

    $25 USD is pretty cheap for a dog house. The materials to make a dog house here in the United States would still cost you at least $120 USD to make a skilled size dog house even with lumber being $3.20 USD. The thing that you have to wonder though is what are people going to pay for a scale, size dog house at the farmers market or on Etsy, because that price is going to be more or less around $400 USD, and you’re going to get people complaining about the price.

    How do you keep bugs from making a home inside the dog house? We get these bugs in the USA that use clay to make a tube and then they live in it for a while. Can you give me a list if items you used?

    • @NikitaMaree
      @NikitaMaree  Před rokem

      We have mud wasps here, that lay their eggs in mud tubes and fill them full of paralysed spiders. They are everywhere around the house, but they mean no harm.
      I don't do anything to keep bugs out. We live rural and spiders and insects are just part of it.
      Hopefully your clay bugs are not harmful and good luck 👍

    That's a stylish dog house!
    How has the stain and finish been holding up over the year so far? Thinking of building a quail coop and might try the stain and finish you've used here as it looks so good and is, as you said, a cheaper way to go about it, so just curious if the finish starts to flake off after awhile and needs to be redone?

    • @NikitaMaree
      @NikitaMaree  Před rokem +1

      The stain and finish on the sides are holding up perfectly.
      The roof is flaking in places but we have had 2 decent sized hail storms in the last 12 months, so that definitely wouldn't have helped.
      I have recently started making my own stain to save even more money and I really like the way it looks.
      I have a video here: czcams.com/video/UukDsFoj-Lw/video.html
      I still use the watered down pavement sealer as a clear coat, but everything is becoming more expensive.

    I'm wanting to make a kennel for my dogs with recycled pallets but am concerned that the stains on the wood could become a health concern for them.

    • @NikitaMaree
      @NikitaMaree  Před rokem

      If you are not sure of what caused the stains then I understand your concern.
      A lot of pallets are used to carry nasty chemicals and you never know what has been spilt on them.
      I am lucky with the pallets that I get because I know exactly what they were used for and I also have a large amount to choose from.
      A possible option could be to use the under side of the boards for the inside face of the kennel so the dog can safely lay against the clean side of the boards and keep the stains on the outside of the kennel. (Just a thought).
      I wish you luck with whatever you choose.

    • @NikitaMaree
      @NikitaMaree  Před 2 lety

      Thanks Iraj. A radiant barrier between the 2 roof layers, would probably be good idea for hotter climates. The bugs for me are not really an issue, because the gaps are minimal and the door is wide open anyway 👍 Hope it works out for you.
