    Villa Park is an amazing stadium. Just watched Villa whip City(6/12/2023) and the atmosphere during the game was amazing. The stadium is a real arena of emotion, almost a "couldron."
    I watched Villa against Juventus in the European Cup quarter final back in 1983 and the arena "feel" was just the same back then. It has been expanded and improved since then and has this magnificence about it.
    I hope this stadium doesn't get demolished in order to build a new souless, sterile football ground. I hear San Siro is scheduled to be torn down son. Highbury is gone, Atlético Madrid's old Calderon has gone and what replaced those grand old stadiums are souless monstrosities.

    Many thanks Nick for taking the time out to cover Villa Park. As a big fan of your videos of Anfield and Bramley Moore Dock was highly delighted to see this as a notification this morning. Given the land lock of Villa Park it does mean that it keeps the old school stadium feel whilst still being modern.

    Atletico Madrid's old ground The Vicente Calderon stadium did have a tunnel running under it's main stand. They moved to the new Metropolitano stadium in 2017. The 2019 EUFA Champions league game between Liverpool and Spurs was played there.
    Unfortunately the grand old Calderon stadium was demolished in 2020

    Thank you for making time for us on your travels, Nick.
    It's a good-looking set of structures, especially the grand 'garden terrace' with its balustrades. Admittedly the variety of canopies on the four stands looks like the pages of a catalogue, or a history of architectural fashions, but it still holds together visually at street level. Although very different, the facades work together as a stylish statement; the stadium deserves its place as a Euros venue and it will be interesting to see how any new development rises to the occasion and the heritage.

    Excluding the 1970s north stand, all the other stands are 90s and 00s built, and they all have a nod to their predecessor, so the character of VP going back to the 1950s has been retained quite well. Although the ornate Edwardian architectural features of the old Trinity were lost forever when it got replaced with the current stand. And of course the massive Holte End terrace sadly had to go in the 90s.
    The awful 1970s built north stand, which to be fair has probably earnt its place in the minds of many football fans when they think of VP will be demolished and replaced soon. An open standing terrace preceded it, and it will be succeeded by a modern two tier stand with all the latest and best facilities.
    Along with the new north stand lots of work needs to be done all around the rest of the stadium, to make it look and function better. Spurs have really raised the bar and all the other stadiums need to reach that standard, which is very hard to do in the constraints of stands built 20-30 years ago. But plans are afoot to keep VP right up there as one of the great and historic football grounds of England.

    With the Euro's in 2028 being secured for the UK and Ireland and Villa Park being listed as one of the venues, it should mean the redevelopment of the North Stand going ahead taking it to about 50k. The government should now put up funding for the improvements to Witton Station and possibly Aston Station too as public transport to the ground is awful at present. I'm not a Villa fan but exciting times ahead if you are.

    • @neilburns8869
      @neilburns8869 Před 7 měsíci +1

      I disagree that the UK government should pay for Villa Park stadium improvements and redevelopment just because the UK and Ireland have won the right to stage Euro 2028.

    • @matthewtaylor8394
      @matthewtaylor8394 Před 7 měsíci +3

      @@neilburns8869 They are not paying for the Stadium improvements but paying for part of the pubic transport infrastructure required to host the tournament (I think about half).
      Villa have been wanting to do this for a while but its been held up. The local government, the train company and central government funding have held up improvements to public transport to and from the ground for years. At the moment public transport away from the ground after a match day is pretty much non existent so its well over due for investment.
      Some countries pay for brand new stadiums and infrastructure to host tournaments as is the case in N.Ireland which is building a new venue. In England that is not required but infrastructure upgrades are needed at some venues.
