I WAS accepted a few weeks later and I eventually joined in October 1982. 1st time Ive seen this despite watching the whole conflict develope at the time. What a terrible risk it was, saved by the outstanding professionalism of the British Soldier/Sailor and Airman. What the British Soldiers and Marines achieved in the Falklands is the stuff of legends but lets not forget the terrible loss of life, on both sides.
I was 11 years old when the war started, this footage brings back memories. I used to hurry home from school to follow the news updates as to how the war was going, what had we lost and what had ‘they’ lost. It seemed like an exciting movie and felt immense pride (innocence of youth). It was an incredible achievement by our forces but nonetheless a terrible loss of loss of life by both sides. Respect to those fallen and the veterans on both sides. Britain has changed so much since then...and not for the better sadly.
My uncle was on Fearless for this expedition, after years of being told by the powers that be that certain things could not be afforded he said it was amazing the amount of stores and equipment that came 'out of nowhere' in the days before the task force sailed... I was a kid sat on the the roof of the Gosport ferry pontoon roof watching them sail, if I remember correctly, fearless sailed next , then stromness and then plum leaf . My dad was the engineer on a diesel electric submarine in refit in Portsmouth, they took him off that and put him on a requisitioned trawler that had Diesel engines on and headed off down to the Falklands to clear mines and run the special forces around .
It's funny listening to the commentary 30 years later, senior serving commentators giving their "supposition of what and when" and the press hap hazardly ltossing ideas in the wind. I remember well this day and the efforts across the board to make it happen. Navy yard contractors working night and day to get the warships ready, service personnel rushing around getting their kit ready to move. ...........RIP to those that didn't make it back job done lads.

I had left 'The Pusser' before this conflict occurred. However, whilst still at school I did take an educational cruise on the TSS Uganda, which during the Falklands War was deployed as a Hospital Ship.
I remember that day well. Regarding HMS Hermes and the difficulties in getting her ready, the Royal Navy had another carrier mothballed in Portsmouth, HMS Bulwark, and in case it was needed due to initial problems with Hermes, they got the engines going on that as well. However it was never required, plus it wasn't in a seaworthy state to sail. One does wonder however, if it had been in a seaworthy state if it would have gone done to the South Atlantic as well!

The Argentine government was worried about their aircraft carrier being sunk too. It would have been a great psychological blow so it and the rest of the navy returned to port.

It was the USS Iwo Jima they offered, as the Harrier's could be launched from it easy enough. Iwo Jima was an amphibious assault ship, not a supercarrier.

Royal Navy should have rushed HMS Illustrious into service during the Falklands War to deploy a fleet of 3 carriers. With the benefit of hindsight, UK would have achieved total air superiority right at the start of war and the losses of Royal Navy ships, auxiliary vessels and military servicemen could have been averted.

The crew have stated that the attack didnt happen, because it didnt. What happened on the 30th of may, was that 5 planes were sent after british ships. They took their last exorcet along with them, to try and get a kill. Their plan was to fly around the taskforce and come in behind. This is where the problem started. Because of faulty navigational gear, the pilots flew too little west, ending up with, when they circled back, rather than approaching from behind, they approached from the east, hitting the screen. The vessels they ended up encountering was HMS Avenger and HMS Exeter. The Exorcet was fired at the ship with the biggest radar ping, which was HMS Exeter, a type 42 destroyer whos radar signiture could be big enough (at certain angles) to look like an aircraft carrier. This missile never hit, running out of fuel and splashing into the sea (HMS avenger logs at 1736 "Splash one exorcet"). The 4 A4Cs then approached to try and drop bombs. One was hit by a seadart, the other, by small arms fire, or debris from the first plane. The other two pilots managed to drop their bombs (missing), and turned away to head back to base. Both pilots initially stated they couldnt identify the target, and therefore, were interrorgated for two hours over whether it was or not. It wasnt, also proven by the awful photoshop they did of invincible on fire (it was a still image from when it was on medeteranian duties wwith smoke fastened onto the top). This is proven by the ship logs, and reports of the attack (that have been declassified), with invincible reporting no such hit. As impressive as the UK victory was, this war was extremely risky for them. Imagine if Argentina had sunk that carrier? Which they could have, because they were relative vulnerable. I still get goosebumps looking at this footage. When all of this happened, I was 17 and waiting to be accepted to join the Royal Navy. I WAS accepted a few weeks later and I eventually joined in October 1982. I am a huge fan and supporter of the Royal Navy and I cannot understand those who choose to slag off our Armed Forces when they know they are being protected by them every day and especially when the shit hits the fan

1st time Ive seen this despite watching the whole conflict develope at the time. What a terrible risk it was, saved by the outstanding professionalism of the British Soldier/Sailor and Airman. What the British Soldiers and Marines achieved in the Falklands is the stuff of legends but lets not forget the terrible loss of life, on both sides.
That old girl should be saved and brought back to the UK as a museum ship.

I was 11 years old when the war started, this footage brings back memories. I used to hurry home from school to follow the news updates as to how the war was going, what had we lost and what had ‘they’ lost. It seemed like an exciting movie and felt immense pride (innocence of youth). It was an incredible achievement by our forces but nonetheless a terrible loss of loss of life by both sides. Respect to those fallen and the veterans on both sides. Britain has changed so much since then...and not for the better sadly.
My uncle was on Fearless for this expedition, after years of being told by the powers that be that certain things could not be afforded he said it was amazing the amount of stores and equipment that came 'out of nowhere' in the days before the task force sailed...

Wow, the Hermes was a BEAST! I love the learned naval chit-chat that accompanied all of this. If only the commentator hadn't blabbered over mighty Hermes blasting her horn as she passed into open sea.
I was 15-years of age and utterly transfixed on the TV watching this... I remember event then thinking a war was pretty well going to happen.
I was a kid sat on the the roof of the Gosport ferry pontoon roof watching them sail, if I remember correctly, fearless sailed next , then stromness and then plum leaf . My dad was the engineer on a diesel electric submarine in refit in Portsmouth, they took him off that and put him on a requisitioned trawler that had Diesel engines on and headed off down to the Falklands to clear mines and run the special forces around .

It's funny listening to the commentary 30 years later, senior serving commentators giving their "supposition of what and when" and the press hap hazardly ltossing ideas in the wind. I remember well this day and the efforts across the board to make it happen. Navy yard contractors working night and day to get the warships ready, service personnel rushing around getting their kit ready to move. ...........RIP to those that didn't make it back job done lads.

I had left 'The Pusser' before this conflict occurred. However, whilst still at school I did take an educational cruise on the TSS Uganda, which during the Falklands War was deployed as a Hospital Ship.

I remember that day well. Regarding HMS Hermes and the difficulties in getting her ready, the Royal Navy had another carrier mothballed in Portsmouth, HMS Bulwark, and in case it was needed due to initial problems with Hermes, they got the engines going on that as well. However it was never required, plus it wasn't in a seaworthy state to sail. One does wonder however, if it had been in a seaworthy state if it would have gone done to the South Atlantic as well!
Yes, I was told about Bulwark being fired by my father who was on HMS Diomede at the time.
HMS Illustrious was also finished rather faster than expected due to the war.

The Argentine government was worried about their aircraft carrier being sunk too. It would have been a great psychological blow so it and the rest of the navy returned to port.

Seeing the Tiger in the background reminds me that if Argentina had timed things better, many of the fleet units used, would have been no longer had been available and Argentina may have won or the USN would have had to help. As I understand the USN offered one of their supercarriers to help with RN efforts.
It was the USS Iwo Jima they offered, as the Harrier's could be launched from it easy enough. Iwo Jima was an amphibious assault ship, not a supercarrier.

Royal Navy should have rushed HMS Illustrious into service during the Falklands War to deploy a fleet of 3 carriers. With the benefit of hindsight, UK would have achieved total air superiority right at the start of war and the losses of Royal Navy ships, auxiliary vessels and military servicemen could have been averted.
The royal navy considered doing repairs to HMS Bulwark and sending that but felt the damage was too great. Bulwark was a sister ship to Hermes.
They actually did speed up illustrious' build. She arrived at the end of the war and relieved Invincible. Hermes had already returned at that point

Había colonos británicos viviendo en las islas desde 1765 antes de que existiera Argentina y probablemente antes de que España supiera incluso que existían las islas. Existe un video británico de la época donde se hayan entrevistado a los tripulantes del portaaviones HMS Invincible relatando su experiencia en la guerra y negando el ataque de los pilotos argentos?
Dicen que había 1.000 tripulantes que prestaron sus servicios en dicho portaaviones durante la guerra en 1982, pero en 39 años no encontré a los tripulantes negando ese ataque, siguen callados, no se los conocen, por lo menos para ir a hacerles entrevistas en privado. Quiero que los tripulantes del portaaviones testigos presenciales de los hechos hayan hablado en entrevistas. Porque del lado argento conocemos una versión de los testigos presenciales, hace 39 años que los pilotos vienen asegurando firmemente que atacaron al portaaviones y del lado del portaaviones británico sus tripulantes jamás se los desmintieron. No sirven las fuentes y comentarios de terceros negando el ataque porque no formaron parte de ese portaaviones en la guerra de 1982, la pieza clave son los testimonios de sus tripulantes.
The crew have stated that the attack didnt happen, because it didnt. What happened on the 30th of may, was that 5 planes were sent after british ships. They took their last exorcet along with them, to try and get a kill. Their plan was to fly around the taskforce and come in behind. This is where the problem started. Because of faulty navigational gear, the pilots flew too little west, ending up with, when they circled back, rather than approaching from behind, they approached from the east, hitting the screen. The vessels they ended up encountering was HMS Avenger and HMS Exeter. The Exorcet was fired at the ship with the biggest radar ping, which was HMS Exeter, a type 42 destroyer whos radar signiture could be big enough (at certain angles) to look like an aircraft carrier. This missile never hit, running out of fuel and splashing into the sea (HMS avenger logs at 1736 "Splash one exorcet"). The 4 A4Cs then approached to try and drop bombs. One was hit by a seadart, the other, by small arms fire, or debris from the first plane. The other two pilots managed to drop their bombs (missing), and turned away to head back to base. Both pilots initially stated they couldnt identify the target, and therefore, were interrorgated for two hours over whether it was or not. It wasnt, also proven by the awful photoshop they did of invincible on fire (it was a still image from when it was on medeteranian duties wwith smoke fastened onto the top). This is proven by the ship logs, and reports of the attack (that have been declassified), with invincible reporting no such hit. At the time the attack took place, HMS Avenger was 27 nautical miles away from Invincible, meaning, with the horizon at 12 miles, and visibility at 8, invincible wasnt even in sight.

As impressive as the UK victory was, this war was extremely risky for them. Imagine if Argentina had sunk that carrier? Which they could have, because they were relative vulnerable. They could have inflicted a major blow and maybe turned the tide of the war in their advantage. Or if they had a few more exocets? Or if they had just a few decemt air defense systems in island?
