Replica Climax Logging Steam Locomotive: Locust Heights and Western

  • In the hills of Clarksburg, West Virginia behind a quiet, residential community, a small, backyard railroad runs between the trees. The Locust Heights and Western Railroad is a privately owned and operated railroad that began in 1974 with the construction of a replica type-A vertical boiler Climax steam locomotive. This was one of the common early designs of logging railroad locomotives in North America. During the summer, the railroad gives public rides on most Wednesday evenings over their three quarter mile long loop of track. In the spring of 2018, I participated in a photography event that was put on as a fundraiser for the railroad. Come along as we watch the little Climax locomotive pulling recreated logging railroad trains through the forest on the Locust Heights and Western Railroad.

    Before I found out that this little guy was a Class A Climax locomotive, I thought he was a tram engine. I likely thought this because his boiler is surrounded pretty much entirely by his cab, and he’s also kind of boxy (no offense). He also has a whistle that is a bit too loud for a locomotive his size. :P It might work well on a traction engine, too, though it still kind of suits the locomotive, sounding very much what a small logging locomotive should sound like. Thanks for filming this loco, Mike! I love him. First Class A Climax I’ve seen in action. Very cool. :)

    • @wessparkmon2395
      @wessparkmon2395 Před 4 lety +2

      There are three types of climax locomotives, A, B, & C. B's and C's are your traditional climax engines with the pistons mounted outside a long boiler. A's, like this one, could have either long boilers or vertical boilers with the cylinders mounted in the middle of the locomotive to drive the shaft of the locomotive, but the way the cylinders interact with the gears is the same as the other sorts of climax engines.
