    I think the best parenting tip I’ve ever gotten was for “Safe talks”. Allowing your children to approach you and ask for a “safe talk” at anytime which means they can approach you about anything without fear of punishment or anger from you. I think that being able to have your children approach you can be the most wonderful form of closeness and being able to take in and absorb what they tell you takes a large amount of setting aside your ego and being willing to talk about your own flaws and help them with their problems. We can’t change what our kids are exposed to but hopefully we can teach them how to be good people. Having “safe talks” has allowed me to help my son grow as a person in the most beautiful way and as he gets older it will hopefully help him feel like he can talk to me about anything. As a teenager I think that will be so, so important.

      I do this with my children, and let me tell you, once they are teens especially, it's one of the things I'm so glad we did. Kids will be kids, but the things my daughter comes to me about for her, her friends and all really makes me feel better on the choices she makes. High five!

    When I was a full time nanny I actually did a lot of the Will-Jada thing because I hated the "My house, my rules" parenting, though to be fair the three kids were 8+. It felt like they really calmed down and weren't acting out as much as I'd heard in the stories from their parents, they got to feel heard and would vent and I'd give my thinking process n they'd pretty much always agree. We're still close to this day, they're like my nieces and nephews at this point.

    Have you ever looked into gentle parenting? The whole discussion of feelings and consequences really fits in with it. I co-slept with my babies/toddlers when it was what they wanted and my 5 year old often shouts "it's my body, my choice!" but I do genuinely believe it helps teach autonomy and not the Victorian idea of being seen and not heard.

I live in a place that sometimes it rains/thunderstorms all day, in the winter it is below 0 degrees Fahrenheit almost all winter long and it’s literally deadly to stay outside longer than 10 minutes. But when we go outside and play, I can’t stand the “outside” smell my kids get so they get baths then 😂. My son also has eczema and it flares up really bad if he gets a bath daily. We probably bathe them 2-3 times a week. It works for us, but in your situation where you live in dirt we would bathe them as much as possible 😂

    I was a nanny for a while had a method similar to Will/Jada. I had a couple nonnegotiable safety rules, but was very open to the kids making certain decisions. They really responded well to this and enjoy having a little control. They would explain the thought process behind a decision, and we would discuss possible consequences. It helped them think ahead and articulate their thoughts. Sometimes after talking it through, they would make a difference choice. They had to accept whatever consequences happened because of that choice. I had the right to veto a choice, but I had to explain myself as well. It really helped with impulsive actions, processing thoughts, articulating, thinking ahead, negotiating, and confidence.

  • @meikusje
    @meikusje Před 2 lety +84

    I guess I grew up with the 'adult consequences' method, but slightly different (or at least different from what you say in this video). Basically, my parents just treated us as human beings and gave us a chance to explain and defend ourselves, and also always explained their own actions. However, they also kept us to whatever agreements we'd come to, which is part of the consequences. So if we wanted to go out on a school night, for example, we could, but we'd have to go to school the next day, no complaining and no excuses. And if they said no to something, they had to explain why, and we would get a chance to argue our point if we disagreed. You kind of build it up, of course, because toddlers literally do not have the cognitive abilities to understand long term consequences, but as long as you keep in mind that even your 3 year old is a human being with thoughts of their own, you should be able to find a way to communicate with them in a way that they understand. But this technique also means not being scared to talk about serious issues, because sometimes it brings up topics that a lot of parents are uncomfortable talking about to kids, like death or sex.

    • @jasminem7390
      @jasminem7390 Před 2 lety +13

      It also involves accepting that you aren’t always right just because your the parent and that you child isn’t always wrong just because they’re a child. You’ve gotta respect and genuinely consider your children’s opinions and not just disregard them. That’s a hard thing for a lot of parents. That’s not to hate on anyone though. Excepting that your wrong is hard for most people.

    I would say in those situations where the consequences fall on you would be a good opportunity to talk about empathy. In the world we live in, a lot of the times we don't experience the consequences of our actions ourselves, but other people have to suffer consequences for our actions maybe even over a long enough term that we don't see that. So its a good opportunity to think outside of yourself when you can get away with something but it causes other people problems or to have to work harder to overcome it. Seeing that is an important shift jn perspective I think a lot of people would do well to learn.

    I can relate to the adult consequences portion as a daycare teacher. We try to teach the 3-year olds why what their actions did was not okay. 😂

    Have you ever heard on non-violent communication? There are books and CZcams videos you can self study with it. It goes along with the will and Jada method. It's a very healthy way to communicate.

    The way to do the adult consequences method with school is to explain what could happen to you if they don't do it. What my mom used to say is that if you don't go to school tuency will be called and she would go to jail and I would go into foster care. Trust me it works

    My sister did the not bathing the kids unless they are visibly dirty thing before the Mila and Ashton thing. Now they are pre-teens and teens and they have the WORST hygiene! Trying to get them to shower when they obviously need to because of sports and FFA daily is a nightmare! I wish they had started better habits earlier of showering them daily.

    Regarding the bathing frequency, between once a day and once a week, there are 5 more options. :P I think twice a week is good, maybe 3 if you feel in such a dusty area.

    When I read about the limited bath time practice, I thought "well, they shower, I suppose?" since they don't specifically say they don't wash their kids everyday. Besides, bath and shower are two different things.
    But I wonder if that's what they meant...simple shower time instead. Not necessarily scrubbing a bunch or shampooing everyday even. But water helps clean out a lot.
    Or I dunno... The kids can use wet wipes or a rat. At least to get eye crusties or snot off.

    If I were feeding my baby anything they might choke on, like string cheese, I would string it first. 😁 We have always talked out wrongdoings with our child, and it works great. I would assume there are kids out there who won't respond well to this approach, but it's worth a try rather than getting angry, and having to punish your child.

    I’ve never done “birding” but I’ve seen it. When I saw it the mom spit the food into a spoon, and not directly into the baby’s mouth .😆
