Yeah, I've had that happen before. A normal bolt is fine as long as it's not grade 5 or 8 and is the proper length. I also like to use a lock nut or if I don't have that, I use a second nut to jamb the first. Glad I could help a little anyway - farmboy
As always, New Holland loves their aluminum feeder fingers! I found 5/8" aluminum rod stock which you can cut to length and sharpen is about 1/8 of the price new holland wants for theirs!
I've never messed with wire tie balers but it sounds like your plunger is hung on something if it's smoking the flywheel disk. My first thought is the plunger is against the emergency stop that comes into play when the needles are off of home position. Make sure the needle carriage is all the way back and that the stop is out of the chamber. I've run into this problem before, but it usually just shears the bolt again. You did use a grade 2 bolt of the correct length, didn't you?
Glad I could help. Good luck on finding another baler!
Yeah, it might look new from a distance - lol. I just hope it bales like a new one!

good job.....
Cool looking baler. There is an owner's manual listed on ebay for $35 if you don't have one.
