I like the way how they leave the stage. Not one smile just a quick curtsey and they walk away silently. The American orchestras usually transform this part to a cabaret scene, they smile the audience laughs and we can not hear the music. Not this time. Until the duet at the end every note is well played. Amazing job! Greatings from Hungary!

Absolutely right; the adagio finale of the ‘Farewell’ symphony (1772), is not a humorous pantomime, but the final apotheosis of a carefully planned tonal journey from f# minor to A major to F# major - 3rd-related keys - across the first three movements of the symphony, a pattern which is then repeated in the Finale with the work finally resolving - in fact the only tonal resolution in the whole work - in the final 22 bars of purest F# major (where there is not a single accidental).
The ‘Farewell’ symphony (1772) is *the* single greatest work of through-composition and cyclic unity before Beethoven’s 5th (1808).

The intonation of this orchestra for the age of its members is astounding. You all really get Haydn very well. The second movement was slow enough. There's a kind of gently being carried away about the places this music creates, breathable spaces, for players and audience alike. Imagine going about the daily toils at Estahaz and hearing this music play in the background. For princes who were the enlightened billionaires of their time, could anything have been quite like letting Haydn just compose and have his music played as a part of his princely life? We get to enjoy them all now. What a great pleasure! Some of us just love papa Haydn anyway. Best

In most if not all classical music, there is a subplot, a purpose for the music and motivations that moved the composer. In this case, I write about Franz Josef Haydn. Haydn was Austrian by birth in what was then the country of Austria-Hungary, part of the Habsburg Empire. During the time he wrote this music, he was an employee of Nicholas Esterházy, a Hungarian prince. In the summers, Esterházy would have his orchestra, led by Haydn, relocate to Esterháza in rural Hungary. The orchestra members normally played, and were residents with their families in Eisenstadt. The two locales were not close to one another and musicians did not see their families for months. You might understand that this created much uneasiness and dissatisfaction. The members went to Haydn and explained this situation to him.Haydn, being a humanist with a sympathetic ear knew what he had to do. In the last movement of the 45th, he had members of the orchestra stop playing and depart the stage at precise moments. At the end of the movement, two violinists remain on stage. It was with this action that Haydn thought he could convey the message to the Prince. The orchestra moved back Eisenstadt, not to return to Esterháza for the summer.
So you do not have to listen to the entire symphony , I will suggest you start at minute 24:25 in the video. Of course, I would encourage folks to listen to the entire 45th. As a fallback position, listen and watch the last movement at 24:25. It is in my opinion one the most beautiful melodies in the classical repertoire.

Some interesting thoughts, but could I politely mention one little point.
      Haydn’s name was *Joseph Haydn.*
The penchant for Franz Joseph - particularly evident in the US - is based on a misunderstanding of Catholic baptismal names; Haydn himself only ever used Joseph (Josef), the Latin form Josephus, or by far the most commonly found, the Italian form Giuseppe - the Italian version being the most frequently used signature on manuscripts, documents, and letters for example.
      Franz was *never* used.
To use the full baptismal name of Franz Joseph Haydn is as absurd, ridiculous, and plain silly as calling Mozart ‘Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart’.
Nobody ever uses this mouthful of baptismal names, nor ever did, and we shouldn’t with Haydn either.
Plain Joseph Haydn is the correct form of his name (and neither should the ridiculous and patronising ‘Papa’ be used either).
PS. Prince Nicholas I was the second of *four* Eszterhazy princes by whom Haydn was employed between his first appointment in 1761 and his death in 1809.

In my past l have performed the final movement twice. Once in 1985 in Cyprus, and a few years later in Brighton (England) at the pavilion concerts. We had lots of fun. In 1985 l was in the trio at the end, in Brighton l was part of the duet at the end with my flautist friend, such wonderful memories.

Bellisima musica de Haydn pero para escucharla, ver el video al mismo tiempo y dada la belleza de algunas de las interpretes, distrae del espiritu de la composicion.

If there was no video or description (or someone having a cough attack), it would be hard to distinguish this from a professional orchestra playing a gorgeous rendering of one of the greatest works of Western Music. And a really nasty key to boot.
