    This was timely. I agree with all of these. Regarding Apple watches. The young kids don't wear them as watches - the value is seeing your text and social media notifications on your wrist. I was coaching a lacrosse practice last weekend and one of the assistants forgot her watch. I strapped my extra SM on a rubber strap on her wrist and she wore it for about 5 minutes and handed it back. She said it was too heavy. Also she couldn't tell the time on it. This was a senior in high school and she was the goalie - so she's used to having stuff strapped to her - gloves, pads, a helmet. Apple watches aren't a gateway to horology. They're just a gateway into the Apple tech ecosystem.
    Maybe when I'm a geezer and need the monitoring and don't need to charge it all the time, I'll get a smartwatch, but until then I'm steering clear of that soulless, disposable piece of plastic.

    I have one smartwatch, but it's a "hybrid," and it was a gift. The touchscreen can be turned off, and in that state, the physical hands continue to function, effectively as a quartz watch, for about a month between charges. I like the thing, but only because it was actually the gateway watch that got me into the concept of wearing watches as jewelry. Agree about the longevity problem though. Someday, an iOS or Android update will render the required app useless, and the rechargeable battery will eventually degrade, and possibly become irreplaceable.

    • @Horologique
      @Horologique  Před 6 měsíci +2

      A month between charges is really good for such a device 👍. That's why these "mistake" Watches are important, because as for you they can be a gateway, I'm glad you stumbled upon it 👍

    • @paultomaszewski1964

      I have a "hybrid" as well and it last 5 to 6 months and then you change the battery. It's a discontinued Skagen model called the "Connect". Looks like any anolog watch but you set up the three buttons on it with the app to do what functions it can do.

    Those "connected watches" are rather Smartphones with a strap than anything else. And tell me who will collect Smartphones ? The actual value of Smartphones lie with software, not the object itself. So you will buy one (at a time!) and collect apps upon it. Nobody among the watch collectors will buy such a thing for his/her collection.

    A jeweler/watch-store near me makes it fairly simple. While they stock entry level Swiss stuff like Tissot and also some cool Japanese stuff like Seiko and Citizen, they have a whole window dedicated to "fashion" labels. In there you find labels like Armani, Hilfiger, Fossil and I *think* even Daniel Wellington (yikes!). I know it's not their intent, but that window is, basically, a very helpful piece of consumer advice, since it's a who-is-who of what *not* to buy at a watch-store.. :)
    What gives me pause is the fact that this "biohazard-window" takes up roughly 25 to 30% of their entire display-area.

  • @lammyjammer6670

    To put it simply: an Apple Watch is a computer in the form factor of a wrist watch. Its primary function is not to tell the time; that's actually a secondary feature of it.
    Calling it a "watch" is quite honestly stretching it.

    • @Horologique
      @Horologique  Před 6 měsíci +1

    Greetings from Buenos Aires - Argentina. I guess we all agree a watch is, first of all, a machine for measuring time. Now, problem is there are well known brands that ask fortunes for their watches, based on the (let´s assume is true) fact of highly standards and optimum control quality. If you ask me, I confess this weekend most probably I buy a FESTINA F20665-3 Diver. My humble opinion: good product and quite competitive price. Regards.

    • @Horologique
      @Horologique  Před 4 měsíci

      Hola Daniel, yo crecí en Ecuador, feliz de ver hispanohablantes aquí!
      As for measuring time accurately, a connected watch and quite simply your phone will be the best.
      Wearing a watch is a luxury we don't actually need these days, although for me it's a matter of practicality, heritage and... joy 😁.
      As for pricing a lot of factors are part of the price, like materials, crafstamanshop, and of course, brand prestige. And you are right, some companies rely only prestige to demand exorbitant prices.
      If the Festina makes you happy go for it, it looks good! Although there are other options at the same price but I'm sure you have made your due dilligence

    There are two Invicta types that I would totally recommend.
    For those with average-sized wrists, the Pro Diver is a very well-made 40mm-43mm Submariner homage with a 200m depth rating and a Seiko NH35A movement for well under $100.
    For those with larger wrists (like me), the Invicta Grand Diver (gen 1) is a stunning 47mm dive watch with a 300m depth rating for about $50 more.
    Both watches are real and usable dive watches and they both feature the Seiko NH35A automatic movement. They also both sport very well-made oyster-style bracelets and Submariner-syle indices but that is where the similarities end.
    The Pro Diver is 100% a clomage of the Rolex Submariner with the same hands and rotating-style bezel. It has a simple pressed clasp with the Invicta logo on it and hollow end links.
    The Grand Diver is not a homage because while it does have the Sub-style indices, the hands are completely different and so is the scalloped-edge bezel. The Grand Diver also sports solid end links instead of hollow and a beautifully milled clasp instead of the cheap pressed clasp of the Pro Diver.
    The Grand Diver is a VERY heavy watch but after a little while you get used to it to the point that you can easily forget that you're wearing it. If you have the wrist to pull it off, it is just a stunning dive watch with amazing wrist presence. My personal favourite is the #3049 which is uses a similar colour palette as the Rolex Bluesy but not exact. Where the Bluesy uses a deep royal blue, the Grand Diver #3049's blue is more of an indigo (violet blue) colour. It's not enough to make it look actually purple but enough that it doesn't look the same as a Bluesy. After twelve years of ownership, the gold accents of my GD#3049 have yet to fade and the "flame-fusion" crystal has yet to scratch (it's not as hard as sapphire but it is harder than Seiko Hardlex). In fact, even though I have never had it serviced and wore it daily for about eight years, it still looks and runs as well as the day it arrived in 2012. It is easily one of the best watch buys that I have ever made as I paid about $120CAD for it back then.
