Father had 4 heart attacks & he told me about them before he passed he said passing a kidney was easier than having a tube running up your male organ. Now phobias Probably something huge swallowing me like a great white shark or killer whale.

Hi Jen, you asked early on if they used real spiders. The answer to that question is "YES". If you look in the credits, you'll see one of the crew was listed as "spider wrangler". If you research the trivia on this film, you'll find that they imported 40,000 spiders from Central America that were totally harmless. the only "fake" spiders were the extreme close ups where they showed their eyes and the egg sack scene. The bigger (hand sized) ones were common tarantulas which are also totally harmless. I even had a tarantula as a pet when I was a teenager.
Fun Fact: Jeff Daniels said in an interview that the scene in the basement was completely real, and the fear on his face was real. He had over 100 spiders on his body. Real spiders. He also said that making that movie almost caused him to quit acting as a career.

The spiders are called Avondale spiders. They're a large huntsman spider that immigrated from Australia to Auckland New Zealand. They chose them for the movie because they readily scuttle about. You'll especially love this Jen...they love living together, and sometimes communities of them number in the hundreds. Who said we don't have scary wildlife in New Zealand? Hahaha

Jen, I’m not even afraid of spiders, and your reaction just creeped me out. I used to rescue my daughter from spiders that were in the sink or tub. Her reaction was kind of cute when I “saved” her. But, eventually, I just started handing her a Monopoly style card “Get Rid of one Spider Free”. She would have to hand it back to me to get rid of one spider. Eventually she wanted to keep the card more than she wanted me to get rid of the spider. The card, “a safety token” became what she wanted to keep for herself. So, then, she started catching the spiders herself. Weird that it worked out like that. Once I showed her how to “deport” them outside so they could continue their lives catching other bugs, she was happy with that. Collecting them became fun. I was a bug catcher as a kid, too.

6:35 They used mostly real non-venomous spiders and tarantulas (it’s kinda like herding cats but there’s a way to get them to do certain things for the camera), but “the General” was an animatronic created and operated by a friend of mine, Chris Walas, who’s famous for his work in several films of the 80s and 90s, particularly THE FLY (1986) and its sequel (which he directed), GREMLINS (1984) and its sequel, ENRMY MINE (1985), as well as the melting faces at the end of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981); he also worked on visual effects and/or special makeup effects for such films as DRAGONSLAYER (1981), SCANNERS (1981), RETURN OF THE JEDI (1983), and many others.

My favorite "evil bugs" movie is still 1975's Bug, with super-roaches which spell out your name on a wall when you come home, those and the Zantis from the original Outer Limits episode The Zanti Misfit. Now you're all set for Tarantula, about a tarantula the size of a house that required a young Clint Eastwood to fly overhead and bomb it, I kid you not.

The directorial debut of renowned producer Frank Marshall and debut film of the now-defunct Disney studio, Hollywood Pictures.
One of my favorite movies as an kid.
I had a fascination with Spiders.
Just because of how unique they were.
The movie displays a great use of real and animatronic spiders too.
When this movie came out, i was so blown away.
Essentially a B-movie with a bigger budget, serious yet campy.
Right up there with The MEG, Anaconda and Lake Placid.
I had the comic book adaptation of the movie.
The moment in which Ross Jennings first encoutered his 'Arachnophobia' was revealed in one panel.
Terrifying especially from how it was drawn.
When he talked about it in the movie and it didn't feel as scary.
But you can tell he felt some kind of way.
RIP to Julian Sands (Dr. James Atherton).

It's not one or two spiders. It's HUNDREDS. I grew up with summer walls full of daddy-long-legs. KAJILLIONS of them. They were tens of feet of wiggling, pulsing blobs. But THIS film uses camera angles that match a spider's - from edges of floors, from ceilings, from lampshades, etc.

"Did they use real spiders, or animatronic ones?"
Pasted from a review someone else said:
The small spiders used in the film were Avondale spiders (Delena Cancerides), a harmless species from New Zealand that were provided by Landcare Research in Auckland. Despite their fierce appearance, this spider is a docile member of the crab-spider family and is, in fact, harmless to humans. They were not allowed back in New Zealand for quarantine reasons. The giant "spider" used in the film was a species of a bird-eating tarantula, which can attain a legspan of eight inches or more.
That aside, pretty sure they did use robots and spider dummies for the more crueler scenes like the spider being crushed into goo or the big baddie set on fire. Pretty sure even the dead spider in the box was a prop; because who WOULD pick up the real thing, dead or alive? Well, aside from people who like them of course, but I mean most people don't.

This was amazing. Pity there aren't many other good spider movies like this. I've seen you on edge, but wrapped so tight in the blanket with the head popping out the top was hilarious.
I am arachnophobic. I rented a basement for 7 or so years, and they were EVERYWHERE down there. First couple days there I saw one dragging a big ass bug up a brick wall. Couldn't sleep for a week. Eventually I just had to come to terms with it and deal with them. Plus, they kept the other undesirable bugs down there at bay.
I even started trust exercises with the aptly named "Toilet Spider" who took up residence in my bathroom down there. Would see him every morning, and we were on a "You stay down there, and I'll stay up here. And we'll leave each other alone" kind of deal.

Hey Jen, I follow this fellow from Australia who had initially turned his 32 acre farm into a massive daycare for dogs, and then into a rehab center for abused, aggressive, and otherwise unwanted dogs after covid caused a shutdown of operations. I mention him because I watched a video where he was out with his 2 year old in the late evening, and when he was filming the little one , there was a spider on his face. Actually, it was a Huntsman and it was around 4 inches in diameter. He took it right in stride, gently took it off his face, and still goes out in the evenings with the boy, and his 7 year old daughter to look for and observe the spiders around the house.

I bought a tarantula when I was a teenager, primarily because I thought they were neat arachnids featured in nifty 50s sci-fi movies and kept my brother out of my room due to his fear of spiders. I did place weights on the terrarium lid after I noticed it was strong enough to actually lift the lid. I read somewhere that wherever you happen to be, there is a spider within 3 feet of you. The only time I was ever truly unsettled by a spider was an encounter with a huntsman in a metal storage container - it moved from the floor to the ceiling so quickly that I immediately turned around going NOPE NOPE NOPE.

In the movie MATINEE, John Goodman plays a producer/director of B horror movies, promoting his latest feature in Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He tells his young fans that the great thing about movies like his, and ARACHNOPHOBIA, for that matter, is that you feel the fear watching it, bur then, the lights come up, you stop outside, and everything is okay, and you start to think. "Wow, that was really great!". I don't know if that gives you peace, but it's still true😊

Jen, you were very brave, sort of, and it looked like you handled this movie very well.
Jeff Daniels & John Goodman are great. This creature flick is very humorous and has a great B-Movie feel to it.
Great job, Jen! You are a very fun reactor.

Jen, I live about 20 miles from the Okefenokee Swamp Park in S. Georgia. My back door is a double sliding glass door. One day, I was going out to feed my dogs. When I slid the door open, there was a web about f feet round a huge spider sitting in the middle of it right at face level. She was shiny green and yellow, very pretty.
I took the web down carefully with a broom. I put her on a bush and went out to feed the dogs.
Next day she was back so I did the same thing.
Same the next day. After that she never came back. She either moved on or I accidentally killed her.
I have never seen any spiders like that around here except at the Swamp Park.
The reason I think it was a female because of her size and most males are eaten after mating.

I absolutely LOVED your jabbering throughout your determined effort to make it through this movie.
On a personal note: my wife and I traveled the California Hwy 1 back in '92 and stayed a couple nights in Cambria JUST after filming there for this film wrapped.
There was still lighting gear and spiderweb and body chalk outline props all over the quaint coastal town.
Pretty cool. People there didn't even know what the movie was called; just "something about spiders", as if all the webbing wasn't too obvious. 😂

I used to be pretty terrified of spiders. My version of immersion therapy was to study them, learn about their biology and living habits. When that did nothing to reassure me, I simply resigned myself to eventual death by spider venom, and now every day I go without being bit, feels like a bonus!

    Another great one.
There is a species of spider that does live in colonies. But the reason they do that is because they need venom from lots of spiders to take down the larger animals needed to feed the colony.
Also the larger of the 2 spiders IS the Queen. Female spiders are ALWAYS bigger than the male. Sometimes with a fully grown male being roughly 5% the size & mass of a fully grown female. The female will often eat the male after mating. It's actually VERY rare for a male to get away alive after mating.
Hope everyone is having an amazing weekend & much love to everyone from here in the UK

🥰 You did well with this one, Jen lol. I remember watching this one when it first came out as a kid on Superchannel back in the day; did not a fan of basements make. Great work by Jeff Daniels. And I'd forgotten Julian Sands was in this, may he RIP. And John Goodman for some comic relief (for some reason I'd thought Wayne Knight was in this, not John - too many movies lol.) PS: Hope you're well and that you had a good Thanksgiving!

Story time! I saw it in the theater when it first came out. Twice. First time, I jumped along with everyone else, with the jump scares. The 2nd time, I bought 2 of the biggest buckets of popcorn, and sat 3 rows from the back, in the center. -- I don't like popcorn. -- You remember the shower scene in the movie, where the spider jumps from the shower head to the girl? Well... I held onto those 2 buckets of popcorn & waited.... When that spider was getting ready to jump, I stood up with those buckets of popcorn, and whipped them out over the crowd, just as that spider JUMPED and the popcorn started to land... Can you say: "Utter Pandemonium"? I knew you could. Drinks.... Candy.... Popcorn.... People.... Everything went flying EVERYWHERE. I saw this big Tongan guy jump higher than the SEATS they were sitting on. Not joking. I saw his shoes. They had to pause the movie to restore order. When things calmed down, they restarted it. I sat back down, enjoying my hilarious joke & to finish the movie. But then I noticed that 2 workers were asking people if they saw what happened, working their way back. Shit. I couldn't exactly just hop up and leave NOW. I look back, and sure enough there were a group of 4 people behind me, 2 rows back. Double Damn. But when the worker asked them "Did you see what happened?" They replied:"Nah. Nah, we didn't see anything" Then one of them leaned forward later, whispering: "That was GREAT!"

There's a movie from 1981 called Deadly Blessing, and right in the trailer, a spider drops into a woman's mouth while she's sleeping. In 1977, William Shatner starred in Kingdom of the Spiders, about tarantulas taking over a small town. Then there's The Giant Spider Invasion from 1975, about spiders coming through a portal from another dimension. The largest one is giant!

You know in the 1966 Batman Tallulah Bankhead, Hollywood actress, plays the Black Widow, with a lair that includes a Trap Door Spider.
She is known for her silky soft vocals.
Sadly this would be her last television performance.
Many Hollywood big wig stars tried to be on the show as a villain, of those who couldn't be on as one of those, they would just be a cameo in the show or in the window. Even Santa Clause made a cameo in a window.
