SHAKESPEARE MICRO SERIES Ultralight Rod [First Impressions]

  • Is this the best overall budget ultralight fishing rod? Perhaps! This thing is literally less than $20 and offers anglers a very affordable start to ultralight fishing. In today's video, I test it out and talk about some of my first impressions on this particular rod.
    View This Rod Here: amzn.to/2TWy5Hq
On this outing, I used this 4'6 ultralight rod for exactly what I feel it is best for... Creek fishing! I chased down small green sunfish in tight quarters so this little rod was perfect for portability on the water. Additionally, I about ate it a few times so I would have been anxious carrying an expensive rod with me. If I would have fallen over and broken this rod, I would have only been out $20!
Overall, I feel this is a great rod for the type of trip I took. I think it is a good option for people who don't want to spend a lot of money but want an opportunity to ultralight fish. THAT SAID, this is obviously a cheap piece of equipment and it is very easy to feel that in the craftsmanship. I don't expect this rod to last a lifetime but I think it will do the job for the time being.

Found this video and yes it's a budget steal for ultralight fishing. I've had a couple and use them for a year or so and find someone getting into fishing that has a tighter budget and give it to them. I usually pair it with the Shakespeare micro series reel and it's perfect for throwing small lures and float fishing. I had no complaints and if I lost all of my gear tomorrow I might start off again with one of these. Thanks for this video Ethan

I’ve broken every one I’ve owned and i literally start to miss em until I go and grab another. It just covers all of my light Arsenal in one little rig. This video is a microcosm to me of what fishing is all about. I used to fish the mountains of NC for trout when I was in college at Western Carolina and got hooked (ahem) after being introduced to Ultralite tackle. I'm obsessed with catching small fish now on Roosters, Panther Martins, Beetle spins, etc. where I live now more towards the RDU area where there's more crappie, panfish, bass, etc. It's just so fun! I'm going to try the setup you have as well with the micro jig. Of course, catching big bass and Catfish are fun, especially when it means you have enough food to feed yourself or some family, but there's just something so primal about walking a creek or lake trail and doing what you're doing. Nothing like it.

I love it! You hear fishermen talk about sensitivity in a rod and why it's worth it to pay more for that sensitivity, but that little darter puts the lie to that idea. The fact that you felt that little beastie and set the hook pretty much does it for me RE expensive rods.
I have no doubt that a finer made rod has lots of advantages and is very fun to fish with, but I'm not worried that my old Shakespeare Ranger poles , or the more current budget rods, lack enough sensitivity to cause me to miss anything that might be biting. If I miss it's because I'm not paying attention, not because the rod sucks.

    • @FishAnything

I picked myself up one of these little Shakespeare combos from Walmart, and bought with it some jig heads, an in-line spinner, some small soft plastics from the clearance bin and a little crème crankbait and also got the insurance for the combo, and only spent $29, and I’ve caught fish using what I got so it was quite worth that little bit of money in my opinion 👀😅!!
Though I still prefer my regular ultralight, if I’m being perfectly honest🤔… though the Shakespeare is still quite a fun little combo 👀!

I've actually been using this one for awhile now and I've caught some pretty sizable fish in lakes with it. I originally bought it to be my, "I'm in the mood to fish. Rod and such are in the car. Let's go" sort of set up. But in time it has become my favorite to use, especially after I caught an 11 inch big mouth bass that was on the heavy side, and a 13 inch rainbow trout.
I've now been bit by that ultralight bug and I'm ok with this :P

Those things are great. I have 6 and broke 3. Love em. I can take em in my car. Pre rig them and switch up fishing or move to the next rod if I get hung up. Without spending time retieing everything back. Me and my daughter use the fire out of them. The push button ones break easy but they are worth it. Just keep the pole and buy a new reel. My favorite rods.

The UL rod I bought was around the same price. I got a Berkley Cherrywood and have the reel from my Shakespeare Dock Runner on it (replacing that). Honestly I wish the Dock Runner was an UL and not the medium that it is. But the Cherrywood is holding up fine so far, I've caught probably 30 fish on it in the few days I've had it. Biggest fish on it so far is a 7 or so inch red ear sunfish.
Now that I'm addicted to ultralight fishing I want to get a few different combos for different things.
