- This seems like the sort of thing they'd tell you when you buy a new tractor but that's just not the case! And so...I bent my brand new Kubota LX2610 within about 10 seconds of first putting my butt in the seat! Learn from my rookie mistake!

Feeling your pain. Last year I became the proud owner of my first tractor, an LX3310. Ordered it with a rear blade and an EA grapple, but those came later. It wore a carry-all until winter, when I decided to swap to the blade for snow removal. Having ZERO experience removing/installing attachments, I was quite proud that the swap was made without the loss of any fingers (because I'm a genius and waited to do said swap when we got our first decent snow of the season). It wasn't until I swapped the carry-all back on that I noticed my top link looked something akin to a gray banana, and I had no idea how it could have happened. Thanks to your video, it is the only possible explanation for this "alteration". For the sake of my wallet and my pride, please keep your videos coming. TYVM.

I admire a guy who can tell on himself a little. So far, in 6 months, I've slightly cracked the grill, torn off one of the backhoe stabilizer retention pins, and broke a 3PH stabilizer. You got a little ways to go to catch up!

It takes a good guy to admit his mistake, demonstrate it and show others so that they learn. This was only a $100 mistake, no biggie. Take the time I took delivery of my brand new Cat 395 and promptly backed it it into, and almost over my brand new ATV, crushing it. $15000 mistake. Insult to injury, I did this as my employees watched.
Ouch! That one had to hurt!!! In my case, my salesman just gave me a new one. But I do have the bent one hanging on the garage wall at the Overlook, just to keep me honest! Thanks for watching. 👍😎

I have a 3 car garage with as many doors. So far i have only bent 2 out of the 3 doors. One to go. Wish me luck.
Lol! I feel ya...I'm sure it's only a matter of time for me as well. My current system employs a big orange traffic cone that I place in the bay doorway as soon as I raise the ROPS. You can kinda see it at the end of the video. So far, so good! Thanks for watching! 👍

I love the "hey look! A squirrel"! Don't feel so bad. It happens to other people besides rookies. I get distracted by squirrels too. I backed into a tree and damaged a tail light. It could have been a small tree. One that I could have easily missed in the rear view mirrors that I mounted on each side of my loader tower. It could have been, but it wasn't. It was a massive white oak that you could probably see from the space station. I stopped when I heard the crunch that sounded real expensive. Now we are both members of that rather exclusive club of tractor owners have have bent their tractors.

Perfect excuse to get a hydraulic top link with a free float valve, best addition ever for most every attachment. I have never gone back to standard top link.

Good luck in your tractor search. We've all been where you are now. I think you will find no matter how much research you do, you'll still find ways to "oops" (as this video proves,) but all we can do is prepare as best we can. Once it has a few bumps and blemishes, you realize that 1) these things are pretty tough, 2) EVERYONE screws up somehow, and 3) you remember and learn from the mistakes a LOT more than all the times you do it right! I am trying to learn. Watched another video on changing out from snow blower to bucket and that seems a bit over my head...if I was 30 years younger no problem. The first week I had my CK3510 Kioti, I folded the grille guard down to raise the hood. Finished what I was doing, lowed the hood, and went to work moving dirt. I did not raise the grille guard to its home position. Never noticed what I had done until I parked it and started to walk away and noticed the grille guard did not look right. Sure enough, the loader had hit it and bent it down. Another amateur mistake. $150 later, it is back to good as new. It just happens when you are learning. I’m just thankful that is all I tore up. It could have been worse!

Great first video. I have an older Kubota BX2200 where the ROPS is fixed. Luckily it fits in the garage but both me and my wife have “trimmed” a few tree limbs while cutting the lawn and getting too close to trees. She even popped a wheelie once but luckily didn’t flip the tractor. Over the years I also broke both of the amber blinkers, busted the headlight lens cover and added character to our paved driveway using the rear blade to clear snow. I found replacement lights at tractor supply and also ordered the new headlight plastic lens from my dealer. My tractor has about 1200 hours on it and I still love it.

I did the same thing, i just went and bought a more deluxe top link from tractor supply thats much easier to adjust than the stock one
That's a good idea. I did replace my side link (it's in video #2) with the Kubota ratcheting one, which I love. I've considered doing the top link as well although right now I'm stashing away my pennies for rear hydraulics...top and tilt baby! Thanks for watching Dusty!

Here's a really good option - Always pause and look around before moving forward. And never, never move without looking and thinking through things. I haven't had any issues yet but I'm sure I will make mistakes as well. I'm new to this tractor stuff. So far so good but I'll see if I can heed my own advice. Thanks for sharing.

I’m also a newbie kubota tractor owner, the LX2610 was my choice of tractor, but supply and demand with COVID, I could not get one. So I got LX3310. First 3 weeks of ownership I punched a hole in my inter-most radiator. Which was a repair call, and using my grapple a month or so later, breaking out my grill and left headlight. I bought a new light and a 1/8” metal plate on the ram bar to protect my internals.

I got my BX23S last moth and the first time I went to pull it out of my shop I came within 1/2 inch of taking my garage door out. Lesson learned. As you know, my mind was very focused on everything when first starting out and I wasn’t paying attention to the obvious.
Like most things, it's always REALLY obvious in hindsight! If you didn't hit it, I'd say you did it right. 😉👍😎

I have a 14ft door on my barn. My rops clear no prob. Now my buddy did the same thing in this video. He was also scared of taking out his garage. Live and learn I suppose.

I don't have any need to fold down the ROPS on my BX, won't fit anywhere that I would need to fold the ROPS...however, I've managed to do pretty well with not destroying or damaging anything...I have smacked the side of the shop wall with the loader bucket, which in my case doesn't hurt anything, not like that wall is providing much support other than being in the way...eventually I'll be hitting that wall at a much faster rate of speed to make the door opening wider, then figure out what to do for a door LOL.
My biggest oops came when I tried to remove the loader. Removed the loader, fine, wasn't too bad, came back to hook the loader back up and one of the sides didn't line back up with the hook on the loader frame properly, and just about dumped the loader sideways onto the tractor. Learned right quick loader removal/installation is not going to be a thing with my tractor the loader can just stay on it LOL.
Since December my tractor has been hibernating in the shop, and probably will continue to do so until April or May when its nice enough to do anything with it...right now I doubt I could get the doors of the shop open to get the tractor out anyways...hence needing to redo that door/opening in the future.
We all gotta learn this stuff at some point, and I like others here probably have our first tractor and tearing a lot of stuff up in the process of learning.
Great warning of a possible ROPS pinch point. It would have caught me also.

I haven't done that, but above my garage is still bent up. :-) I also saw a picture of a tractor that caught the ROPS up on a big branch and broke the axle housing and cost a fortune to fix, I'm vary paranoid about that one.

I got a kioti my rops all the way flatt doesn't go below my fenders never interfers with the 3point hitch.

Your a natural at video's, lol. Nice job and great information, I did not know that would happen. My B2601 with the ROPS up will not fit in my garage. I usually fold mine back to the first notch, I could have easily seen myself put it all the way down someday. I did happen to hit my garage header on the first day backing the tractor into the garage, luckily I was going very slow and only put 2 dents into the wood trim. I left the dents there as a reminder, lol.

I've always used the "half way point" on an open station tractor when lowering the ROPS. I just assumed there would be a problem if I went fully down; figuring it was there for a reason. So sorry you had to start that way Chris but thanks for sharing it for others - But hey, congrats on the new tractor! If you start to find that your ROPs rattles when you operate the tractor, you will notice there is a welded nut on each side, right where the hinge on the ROPs is. On a BX tractor , there is bolt with a nice plastic handle screwed into that nut which stops the ROPs from rattling. I found out it fit on the ROPS of my B series. Maybe next time you are at the dealer, unscrew one off a BX on the lot and see if it fits on an LX. I think it cost me around $25.00 CDN. Well worth every dollar. I have the 3 point quick connect and I had the top link adjusted for the BoxBlade and raised the 3 point and broke my tail lights

Well kinda clickbait because you just bent your top link . . . But surprisingly useful tip since my link has a nice bow in it for exactly the same reason! I actually adjusted the lift so the top link can't hit the folded ROPS-but at the cost of some lift height. Only recently have gone to the partly folded method you show. Duh-my fourth tractor. But my first foldable ROPS!

Fortunately, my salesman treated me right and never even batted an eye, just said "I've got a new one on my desk with your name on it, just swing by any time and pick it up." In the end the only thing bruised was my pride! 😉😎
Thank you for sharing this interesting incident. You learned the hard way, but they say no better way to learn than by our very mistakes. Yours looks like a Kubota LX deemed a subconpact tractor. Right after viewing your video, I rushed to watch if the same could have happened with my Kioti ck, roughly equivalent to a Kubota L serie tractor, that is one size larger than the LX in the Kubota lineup. So I can now confirm that a similar bending should not necessarily happen, normally with a typical compact tractor, but depending on the rops particular design or unless maybe for those tractors where the base of the top link-rod of the 3-point hitch has an adjustable height. Mine does not have this feature but just to make sure, I unscrewed to max length the threaded link-rod end and it would then just barely hit the underneath of the folded rops top section, meaning that I can not totally exclude some possible damage.

Moving the hinge point up may work, but there is a shocking amount of engineering that goes into designing ROPS bars for every tractor to ensure they’re effective in a rollover. Shortening it could affect the protection zone.

I use a shipping container asmy tractor garage.
I measured tractor height wit ROPS up and found the standard 40 ft container opening was a few inches short. A "high cube" is about a foot taller. So I got the taller container and don't have to fold the ROPS.
Luckily those links are only about $30 at Tractor Supply. I bought spares so I keep th link on the impliment and don't have to remember how many turns from box blade to shredder to rock rake...
Yeah, I think Jon Ritter (A Ritter Bit Will Do) also uses a container at his property "Yukon Acres". I was lucky with the top link...my dealer didn't charge me for the replacement. 😎👍

It does seem like it could be a pretty easily avoided, right? Just raise the hinge point on the ROPS a bit?

I kinda had a almost woops with my John Deere 2032. While hooking up my Frontier brush hog for the first time. The brush hog has a bracket that holds the pto shaft to the side. If you lift the brush hog with out hooking up the shaft it will get pinched by the lower link and bend the shaft. Luckily I caught it before it did.

Did you see how Tractor Time with Tim BROKE his rear housing leaving the PTO shaft hooked up while trying to load his tractor on his trailer? The salesman was standing right next to him and he also did not realize that was likely to happen until after it did.
Take the thing off and throw it away. That's what we farmers do but with bigger tractors. Actually I cut the thing under the pin hitch level with a sawsall

@@watershedoverlook actually my tractor is used inside chicken houses and I was tired of replacing water lines because one side would be directly under the water line and slightest bump will break them out
I have a B2601 and did the same thing. Kubota could have moved the pivot point on the ROPS up a couple inches. That way when you lower ROPS it would not fold down to where the top link would hit.
I would have thought at a minimum, with all the warning labels they stick on these things, that there could have been at least ONE one about that! Afterwards I just assumed that everyone knew it but me...lesson learned! Thanks for watching. 👍
Your not farmin if you don't have a bent third link on the shelf somewhere! I did the same thing first day I had mine but I raised an auger up to high and smashed my fender!

I grew up driving tractor never would have thought of that. But 1929 Alice Chalmers had no ROP or any other safety parts...
Easy mistake but cheap mistake, I've bent a FEL and then had to repair. Lost chains and tow bars off my tractor. It's very easy to get carried away and bee too rough and it will cost you. Best of luck with your farm work buddy. I even had a 8t chain fall off floor deck and get swallowed up by a 6 foot slasher and it just cut tghat chain up and threw it out in pieces, luckily nobody got hurt
