I just recently started watching the entire M*A*S*H series starting with the pilot. I had watched them as a kid, but never understood the hilarious double entendres. What an amazing show and cast. Alan Alda and Wayne Rogers make me smile even before they even speak on the show. Even the way they look at each other makes me laugh. What a sweet and endearing eulogy Alan gave Wayne. A perfect story for a perfect comedy pair. God bless Wayne Roger's friends and family.

When i was younger i used to prefer the Potter/BJ years. This time around I'm loving Henry and Trapper. Henry has me in stuffed stitches. What great comic timing he had. "Ok Captain Piercentyre." Lol!

that's not the way Jackie Cooper(director of 13 shows) remembered him in his A.B. "PLEASE DON'T SHOOT MY DOG", but I don't recall ALDA having 'equal time'.I'd like to read THAT. COOPER was a great director, but if you ask ALAN ALDA to make a filmed message supporting the troops in NAM,you probably won't get along w/ him well. that actually happened. Alda told JC ,"I won't encourage those kids to prolong the war one minute." this was by the time every one and his brother wanted it to end .and it in fact did, shortly after Cooper's work on the show.. .Cooper comes off as kind of backward ,besides being hawkish.

They were friends, because not all right or left wing supporters are bad or wrong, they just have differing opinions. They weren't fanatics and saw the good in the other. That doesn't happen in the world today, thanks to the current government on both sides. Sad time we live in.

I think Wayne Rogers wasn't as political back when M*A*S*H was on, although I'm not sure. Also, Wayne left the show in part because he had been led to believe his character would be more of a co-equal to Hawkeye, when in fact CBS planned all along to make Hawkeye the star. It says a lot that Wayne and Alan could be friends despite all that.

Roo doodle Wayne Rogers felt he was getting the short end of the stick as in the novel of Mash and in the movie in 1970 Trapper was the chief Surgeon. In the tv show, Hawkeye was the Chief Surgeon but Alda’s career outshown Rogers at the time when the show debuted and as it went on Alda became the favorite and his character got more laughs and better jokes, Alda also was becoming more involved in behind the scenes by the time Rogers decided to leave as Alda had more creative input, was writing and directing episodes. Rogers grew tired of becoming second fiddle to Alda and dealt with a contract dispute. Alda and Rogers did share equal success at first especially in the first two seasons. McLean Stevenson also left as felt frustrated with being almost like second fiddle and left but he regretted the decision as his career was never the same with sporadic appearances in tv shows for years until his death in 1996.

BJ , Potter and Charles were great characters to be sure, but I'll always consider seasons 1-3 my favorites, even though I wasn't old enough to see them in their first run.
A shame Wayne felt he had to leave when he did. He never really got the roles he envisioned after that and we missed getting more "Pierce and/or McIntyre" shenanigans.

    • @Puti880415

Michael Bradley well, the thing is that Wayne Rogers felt that Trapper is devolving into being Hawkeyes sidekick. And Wayne wanted to be equal with Alan. However his easygoing and impulsive character kinda did not have enough space nor time to evolve and Wayne had left. When Mike Ferrell came in and BJ was introduced, character of BJ was ideal for evolution. More serious character, loyal to his wife and children, also kind of guy, who can crack a joke or take it when he is pranked and prank back with a force.

@Vladimír Potěšil That's pretty much what I've heard about Wayne. And despite being the greatest TV show of all time, it did become much more Hawkeye-centric, especially when Alan stared producing and/or directing. I just finished a rewatch of seasons 4-11 and am now hitting my "lesser watched" S1-3 episodes.

@@Puti880415 did not like the "BJ" character at all--far too "sappy"--everything was about his wife and kid "Peg this and Peg that"--they even did a show about his kid's "potty training"--no "Trapper" was far funnier and believable

Wayne Rogers was also on a western TV series called "Stagecoach West" before MASH and then in a short lived, but excellent series called "City of Angels" which appeared after the success of the Jack Nicholson film "Chinatown." I missed the series when it first aired in the 1975 period but A&E showed one episode per week in the 1980s as part of a collection of short lived mystery series... I recorded all the 13 episodes and return to watching them every year or so. Excellent!

Bill Bergendahl about writer George Plimpton who was doing a story about Alex Karris and the Lions and decided to see first hand what players go through in football. He ended up getting crushed in practice and yet it endeared him with the players and in an exhibition pre season game was put in to QB a few series. He was almost crippled. 😆 In all those times writing since Plimpton played with the lions in that pre season he was never so relieved to write about it and not play this kind of sport ever again. 😀
Alda was not an athlete so it looked very believable when they filmed it.
