    I like your last question to the lady. It is painful not only overseas but in Ghana to abandon our own language. Ghanaian parents don’t “allow” their kids to learn any of one of the parent’s native language and some make them speak English at home. It’s real sad.
    I am a “student” of Ghanaian languages. I have lived outside Ghana for more than 5 decades. In addition to speaking three Ghanaian languages fluently, I also own an Interpreter/Translation (English to different African languages) company in America that caters to businesses, corporate world, state/governmental, medical, institutions, etc.
    I leave with a quote from late Nelson Mandela - “If you speak to a man in a language he understands, you speak to his head. If you speak to him in his language, you speak to his heart.”

    I live in the United States at the moment, but I understand what Obroni is talking about because I have been to Norway and other Scandinavia countries, Denmark, and Sweden specifically when I was working as a Marine Engineer. I had an amazing Norwegian friends but culturally they are reserved and individualistic. I really enjoyed my time in Norway and I have friends who married Norwegians. Flotte mennesker etter min mening, når du blir kjent med dem. Don't be fooled, the Norsk you see was translated, I don't speak Norsk like Obroni speaks Twi. Impressive!!! Back in early 1990s, I was doing good speaking Norsk, but then came to U.S. and lost all.

    I am surprised at the comments of some of the people. Remember that English language is our mode of communication because we have too many languages even though twi is the dominant language, some other tribes will not agree that we use twi as our national language. Some body also mentioned that some parents don't teach their children our local languages, why should they? This woman decided to live in Ghana so why shouldn't she speak the local language and if my child live elsewhere why shouldn't she speak the language spoken there afterall that's what that child will use at school. I for one do not see why people will marvel at her because she is speaking twi. Ghanaians, wherever they are , also learn the local language .

    • @appiah-berkorichard6338
      @appiah-berkorichard6338 Před rokem +5

      True but not 100% true. Travel to Non- English speaking countries and you will definitely cherish your local language as a Ghanaian. Teaching your children your mother tongue is no crime. That's definitely who they are because wherever you give birth to them, they will still trace their roots. Of course it's true Ghanaians speak languages elsewhere because you have no choice because the whites don't joke with their mother tongue so you have to integrate which of course you need the language. So why should I speak English or German to my parents if I'm in Ghana. I definitely will cherish my mother tongue whether (Twi, Ga, Ewe .....) If I'm in my country.

    • @markedwinyorke1175
      @markedwinyorke1175 Před rokem +2

      That's the typical Ghanaian mentality. The argument is not about speaking foreign language wherever you might be but to encourage the young ones to also learn their mother tongue unless of course you don't want your children to visit their motherland because they have foreign passports. I have witnessed some parents struggling to communicate with their kids why because the children speak good and impeccable English which the parents sometime don't understand what they are really talking about creating all sort of confusion at home ok
