- Eline Hoekstra Dresden visited Loretta Goldy's History course at Portland Community College on May 18th, 2010 to talk about her experiences as a Holocaust survivor. She was accompanied by her daughter Deb Mrowka.

God Bless her. My grandchildren will learn from this interview. She will never be forgotten.
This is my great grandmothers cousin, my omala had to hide her family as well during the war in utrich in holland. I hope her family is doing well!

This lady is sitting pretty on that chair. Poised like a queen with bright intelligent eyes. She seems to carry herself like a much younger woman. Even the fucking holocaust could not break her. That's incredible. Here i am depressed that i work 6 nights a week & raise my autistic son during the day. I literally could not imagine living with such strength. From what i understand this lady has passed. I am thankful to have heard her story & i will try to draw as much strength from it as i can. I will teach my son all about history, & one day he will watch this video.
Also wanted to say as a daughter ~ you are wonderful & courageous in helping your Mother share her story as I have no doubt your life has been affected also ~ please continue ~ as the world needs to hear & never forget ~ as before Peace to you 🐦 and God Bless 😇
i have always been in awe as to how jews survived ...yet Still cannot imagine WHY they did not band together and fight tooth and nail.
.If they were like us Brits they would have,..,one thing though i LOVED THE DAUGHTER'S ACCOUNT she tells a good story..Alas the mothers accent spoiled it for mr as . i could hardly understand her strong accent..and i am great at accents..sorry you are still admIred..but wish the daughter had told the whole horrific story.. i enjoyed it and understood every word,,maybe subtitles would help the moms story..thank you...May this NEVER happen again..
i learned lots of Yiddish in my health club . sitting with survivors many with their numbers tattooed on their arms..what great fun loving survivors..sorry i missed the moms words.......

I am so grateful this was posted. As a nurse, I often come across patients that had some role in WWII. I am incredibly honored to meet them and give them care. However it is rare that they share any stories because it is much too painful. So, this is incredible. Thank you.
Claudia Getz same here. Many years ago my patient moved her arm and I saw numbers tattooed on her. I knew instantly what that meant and looked at her, startled. She didn't say anything but her eyes said, "I'm so sick of thinking about that." So I kept on doing whatever I was doing for her and didn't ask anything. I really wanted to do or say something to make her feel better, but all I could give her was the silence she wanted.

Im lucky i got to meet eline yrs ago when we were volunteers at a local hospital. Shes such a wonderful lady. She was so kind to tell her story for my daughter and classmates. Something my daughter never has never forgotten.

I met a couple of survivors in HS when we went to the Museum of Tolerance. That’s a day that stuck with me and I hope to never forget it.
I remember one of these surviving ladies who has now passed on coming to my school in 2005 and telling her story. It's something that made an impact on my life. Never forgot her or her story...
I never forgot what she had spoken to me about. I heard her Dutch accent from across a noisy, large area at a fair. I was in a n awful mood. I spoke to her. She told me to always have hope. I never forgot her. Never. My family survived the war. My oma and opa immigrated. My opa was part of the underground. We did not give in to the Nazis.
I am half Dutch. My mother’s family is Dutch and grandmother came to the US when she was 5 years old. I often think of what my grandma’s family went through during WWII. My heart goes out to you and your mother and your family. God bless. ❤️
I was a CNA in the 1970's and will never forget my patients that had the numbers tattooed on them. Three men and one woman. It still horrifies me...
As a college student I worked in a Jewish nursing home and several of the old ladies still had the tatoos on their arms. It's still unbelievable how human beings can descend to such depths of cruelty and how by the same token survive such horrors. But then we aren't sinless either.
Sinful people saved human lives

I am German and just like Mrs. Eline I do not understand why Jews are so often the scapegoats. To me everyone has the same rights, is worth the same and should be accepted, as long as they don't violate other people's rights or wellbeing. Mrs. Eline is a sweet and strong lady and I'm grateful she shares her story with us. Thanks a lot and God bless♥️

To have a daughter help, and so very eloquently, to speak up alongside of her incredibly exemplary mother is exactly what I hope that my young grandsons will also do. The great value of carrying on talking is that perhaps such catastrophe cannot recur. Yet it does recur.
So please let us ALL keep talking and praying and more. This is a tremendous educational offering.
This lady must of been through a hell of a lot growing up 😞 I hope so much she is living in peace now. I wish everyone that was affected by the holocaust peace and happiness.

I found this video a bit ago while watching a 411vm skate video only because it was on the videos that were up next. It turns out that is my great grandmothers cousin. I had asked my grandmother and she had her book and told me about her and the book is incredible and sobering at the same time. Unbelievable I stumbled upon this.
So glad I came across this. My great great grandparents met in a concentration camp. Survived together, then Immigrated to Chicago💕 She reminds me of my papa, still has that jet black/brown hair in her 80s 🥺❤️❤️

really lovely ladies, I worked for Jewish people and a Jewish nursing home 10 years ago, I was always well looked after and treated with respect.

I married a Hoekstra and I do not see that name very often. My father in law was Frank Doyce and my husband Jack Doyce Hoekstra. Frank was conceived in Holland and born in 1933 in kansas USA. Thank you for sharing your story.

If this is her when she’s “ not feeling well” I can only imagine when she was young and healthy. She was a spitfire which is how she survived.
Seriously. I just commented that she is poised like a real queen on that chair & she carries herself like a young woman. She seems so intelligent & sure of herself. I am happy to have heard her story & i will show this to my son when he's old enough to keep her story alive

I didn’t realize that there were many Dutch were taken into the camps. I knew about Corrie Ten Boom and she was captured for hiding Jews in her home. My great-great grandma lived in the same neighborhood as Corrie and they knew each other. My great-great grandma also hid Jewish people in her home. When the Germans came knocking at the door, she would put her long hair in front of her face, take out her dentures and babble like a mentally ill woman. Germans left her alone. My g-g grandma was never caught. I’ve always been proud of that story and I loved it when my grandma would tell me about it growing up.
That is great to know your grandmother did that! There were lots of people that put their lives at risk to save others. Praise God for such people! I love Corries book, though like this clip, sobering to know how these people suffered.

Touched to hear about your great-grandmother. did her story ever reach the "Yad Vashem" ? it's the israeli archive and there are the stories also of the "righterous among the nations" there, to be honored and recognized for thir acts of bravery.

Thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts. I know it isn't easy to talk that long or sit still. My father sat me down when i was 11 to tell me about the Holocaust. He showed me the newsreels and explained. We were Christian, but it didn't matter. I appreciate going thru the stories of experiences. It means so much to me.

My heart and mind reals at what you went through… no human should have to have that at all….so sending huge loads of love, respect, special treatment, careful to not let you think we don’t care…because we do… blessings to you in such overload and all survivors and the ones who never made it… that overly given felt love so special and sincere….
I didn't know that, what can we do to get this good man and his family recogonised for his heroic deeds. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Maybe we can start with simple emailing all our contacts, or if some can post an address for Jewish organization that we can send this info to, maybe they will assist in correct recognition for this wonderful man. 30,000 lives saved = at least 100,000 today when you take into account the offspring.

Sometimes, thinking of my own hardships..It is "nothing" compared to WW2 and what they went through. IF THAT WASNT ARMAGEDDON..THEN LETS PRAY AND HAVE FAITH THERE WONT BE A REPEAT..IM PRETTY WORRIED ABOUT CHINA THOUGH..I am praying for them and the whole world too..

Thank you for sharing your life's story. It needs to be told over and over. People need to hear what happened and how little by little the enemy slipped in to destroy the Jews. It is unreal how some can say
It never happened. Your testimony is proof that it did. Again thank you.
This is not just a legacy for the Jewish community but a great lesson to all of mankind. Death and unnecessary murder is a heinous act to ALL human beings period. Stop all war as you are damaging your souls if only you knew . . . Because God Knows All of It and I'm sure a price will be paid. He set 10 clear laws for all the world to follow and we can't seem to keep it simple, as we're supposed to! I cringe at the thought of what punishment would await such lost souls. Pray for their salvation. Because the innocents who have passed away are being held up in tribute to honor them elsewhere for their needless suffering and I believe they attain a level similar to sainthood where they are lifted in processions to the throng of His Great Kingdom in the Firmament. Martyrdom is an important reminder. These special individuals were chosen for one reason or other to be there and they will be lifted up for thousands of years and will never be forgotten. They are sitting beside Him in heaven, if only they were aware of the multitude of angels in their midst. I know this video was done several years ago and the survivor may not be with us now, but I adore her and admire her so much. I feel like I can see in her eyes the determination she had through that horrible time in her life. Her strength is just unbelievable. I wish I could have known her. She is precious.
Such an honor to hear the stories of those that survived the Holocaust. It gives further proof that those that try to deny it can not refute. I take comfort in those that went on to lead long, lovely lives. Those that had children to carry on their name and their stories. Such horror, yet still we see their resilience shine through. Most of the survivors are almost all gone. If it wasn't for video's like this then a part if history would be lost.

What a great informative presentation. Your mother looks so strong for being 87 and everything she went through. From a young age, I have always wanted to learn about the holocaust and the experiences that people endured. God bless your family for coming through such a horrific time. I was lucky enough to be her neighbor for almost two decades. Spent many of hours with her growing up. Was lucky enough to see her share her story at my high school and participate at her celebration of life. A wonderful woman. Check out her book if you are able to find it.

I forgot to mention the explanation of the day-to-day vicissitudes of life/living and how one goes on post war which is not mentioned but understood in part by the resolve and matter of factness you both show. I teach high school math and science in Canada but will find a way to work this into my teaching.

I heard two stories years ago about Holland when the Germans invaded Holland. My husband's coworker was from Holland and he was not Jewish. But, he said the Germans took all their food and the people of Holland were starving when the war ended. Another person told me of the cruelty of SS to Jewish children and babies. All she said is true and more as there are many of the same accounts retold and they agree in facts.
"..you couldn't get to their feelings..they didn't have any." Perfectly put. What an articulate, direct, inspirational woman.
My Grand parents survived the Turkish Genocide in 1914 and they never wanted to burden us as your mother is doing with that pain in their hearts of the horrors they went through .may this never happen again .

Back then people didn't dwell over tragic experiences, they didn't loft around all day on the pity pot. Back then they just DID they DID and never gave up on hopes, dreams, and determination!
I really don't think anyone from this sadness chapter even knew if they were emotionally suffering because this wasn't a thing Back then. My grandmother told me about my dad's mother and her trauma and said yes it effects them later in older years but they still refused to see why they were suffering.
I don’t know, that’s quite the sweeping generality. People certainly did get depressed and hopeless. But there also weren’t programs and pills and therapists like there are today so you had to sink or swim. But plenty of people back then went mad, committed suicide, cried for years with grief, was morose, became alcoholics or abusive, etc.
Moms doing great !!!! God bless her .It probably hurts too much to go there ,She did great tonight ,she went through more than most .
Amazing story, what a life. Sad it wasn't always so wonderful due to others' (Nazi) outside influence and anti-Semitism, which is so sadly growing. Blessings dear lady.
