I love the rhythm in this song and I've always been an ameteur play for fun in front of small groups early on but I'm about to turn 60 in 2 days and one of my things is to challenge myself learning new songs that I always loved but couldn't play. This one is on my list and I'll be playing it on my 79 Epiphone Genesis I got when I turned 16. I treasured my guitar and it has a few scars on the neck from me accidently crashing it into my friends symbol while he played drums in a small 10 x 10 spare room when we were teenagers. I paid 400.00 back then and got to hear it side by side against a Les Paul and my ear loved the sound of the epiphone better. My dad was willing to kick in the extra 300.00 for a lower end Gibson Les Paul and I still chose the Epiphone.

In the only live footage of the song with Hartman singing lead that I found on CZcams, he plays a double-neck, a love shild of a guitar and a bass. He plays the riff then switches necks to play the bassline. Truly awesome.

I can remember when this tune first came out around '73 and copying it off the album as there was nobody around to show it to me or no internet and much later on found out all the songs I copied off of vinyl records in those early days were exactly the way they are suppose to go, often my transcriptions by ear were more accurate than the tabs etc that I looked at much later to compare notes and I never slowed down the records as I can slow down the notes in my mind no matter what the original speed is, for many years I just took my gift for granted but then realized a lot of people can't do that, unfortunately I have carpal tunnel now and can't play much anymore, a twist in fate.

Frets 5-4-3-2 on the G string. But then I saw much more like how you play that octave part that slides into the main riff again at 9:18. such awesome stuff. Thanks!!!

This song has always made me happy since the early 70s when I was a little kid. You're an excellent instructor, teacher, player and your love and RESPECT for the medium and its history is there in spades -- you've got a good ear too. I have a small handful of YT guitar teachers I go to when I want to learn songs verbatim, you know ... how they SHOULD sound 😄 Inevitably you drive me crazy with big doses of reality as some of these masterpieces require more effort than I initially expected -- oh, the truth hurts! One example is your lesson on Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo ..., it's spot on. Bit more work there if you want to get it RIGHT and once you demonstrated that, it 's tough to unhear. I'm not beyond having fun with just getting the skeletons of some of these though as you can build skills from it all. Thank You!
Love this song....flawless lesson (as always) I also learned something....I always assumed this was Derringer. I had no idea it was Dan Hartman. If I mention Dan Hartman most people will either say The "I can dream about you" guy from the 80's?.....or that guy from SNL? (only one of which is true btw) Classic rock & roll
This was such a great tune. There is another significant difference between the LP version and the single version. The most noticeable is the heavy upper end Wah on the rhythm part once the band kicks in. I always thought that was great.
Fantastic again, as always! Hey, did you notice at 8:25, you played the opening of Brownsville Station's "Smokin' In the Boy's Room"? I love that old Midnight Special clip of them playing it, they really rocked the place that night.
I thought that guitar looked very familiar. I had a 1975 Gibson Les Paul Standard in the same color. What is interesting about that vintage is that the serial number was not stamped into the wood but was a decal. On my guitar the truss rod cover said 'Standard' but the decal said 'Deluxe'. This was because in 1975 Gibson did not offer a 'Standard' as part of the line but you could special order one. If you did the guitar would come with the full size humbucker pickups and 'Standard' on the Truss rod cover. However the serial number decal would still say 'Deluxe'. The other interesting thing about that vintage is that the frets did not have the 'nibs' that were common on Les Pauls. The frets were put on over the binding on the neck.

Great tutorial. The only thing I play a little differently is at the end of the opening riff, instead of playing the A chord at the second fret, I just get my A on the seventh fret…it’s easier at it keeps me in the general area to start the riff again.
It's a great two hits album and I wonder if Dan Hartman's song Autumn from the same album might have gotten more airplay had it not been buried by two monster hits? I've looked high and low for a breakdown of the acoustic guitar on Autumn but the song remains elusive on CZcams.

This song (and Frankenstein!) never came on in my ‘74 Firebird without the volume hitting about 3/4 on my quad 8-track!!!

The Les Paul helps. But playing with my Strat and a Deluxe a little distortion and a little delay sounds pretty good.
